Woman 19 dies in dog attack in Bristol

Apologies if there’s already a thread on this, but how many more lives have to be taken in these horrific attacks before the Government admit that the current measures are failing. It surely has come to the point now that all XL Bullies should be euthanised.

@OonaStubbs and @YouMustBeTheWeasleys I agree but it's not going to happen unfortunately

My friend is a XL bully owner, her DH is a police dog trainer. In the right hands these dogs are no different to any other large breed. Yeah I know not all are owned by people with his experience and capabilities. He's a much loved, well behaved family pet and very affectionate dog who tends to drool on you a lot.

Guns are perfectly safe "in the right hands". We still have an outright ban on many types of gun.

Anecdotally my husband's uncle was bitten very badly a couple of months ago by his neighbours XL bully, he was in hospital for almost 2 weeks, has had to have several surgeries and will be lucky to be able to walk normally again. He's a big man too, if it had been a child they'd probably have been killed.

Blimey. How awful. Has the dog been put down now? How did it get to him?

My dogs used to fight with each other, just like small scraps but they’re both big dogs so it could get quite intense before either of them were castrated (both labs, not XL bullies). The one thing that worked every time to shock them and make them stop was to throw a glass of water over them. They haven’t had any of their little spats in years luckily since they were castrated but I’ve thought that could also work to buy a bit of time in a dog attack (if you have a bottle of water anyway)!

I had a hose with water straight into a locked on dogs face...didn't work. A glass of water will do nothing.

This video shows how hard they are to remove from a victim, and then how it goes for other people.

If this breed is got rid of the people that had them will replace them with another aggressive breed. Since the XL ban there's been a rise in Cane Corso dogs round where I live, and they are also scary.

Our local RSPCA rescue had a Cane Corso available for re-homing a couple of months ago. I was very surprised at this.

BattIestar · 27/02/2025 23:44

A group I follow on Fb has found the owner of the dog, she is a full on pit nutter, supports XLs, most of her fb profile is about XLs/supports the Don't Ban Me License shite, supported Sammy Wilkinson who was caught moving XLs to Scotland.
She is part of the "The UK against Breed Specific Legislation"
Follows breed apologist Southern Dog Training.

I believe they've got the right person.

If the dog wasn't a full-sized XL, it was of the bully breed persuasion.

Seems the girl who was slaughtered was her cousin. I have less sympathy for the girl who died who willingly let the dog in her home/visited a home with a bully breed. What a devastatingly awful way to die. But I am glad it wasn't an innocent bystander. We ALL know these dogs are capable of killing, and should avoid them at all costs. I hope the owners feel the full force of the law and end up in jail.

Starmer needs to call on a cull for all of these bastard breeds, starting with the XLs, and adding Cane Corsos and all of that ilk.

ANiceBigCupOfTea · 27/02/2025 23:46

I groomed dogs for many years and I never did groom bullies. Yes they can be lovely dogs, yes they can be calm and docile but once those jaws clamp thats it. You're literally f*ed and whats more their ears and tail also make it very hard to read their body language- I had a massive German Shepherd as a client for years and he was a sweetheart but if he got grumpy or tired of being on the table, those big ears, that big tail and the hackles told me he needed a break.
I really don't generally believe it's the dog and will normally feel its the owner but bullies are a very risky breed and shouldn't be owned by the general populous. Flip me I wouldn't even have one and I'm qualified in animal management!

Jeez the fact she's more concerned about her dog than her dead cousin tells you everything you need to know about this fucking idiot. Sickening.

BattIestar · 27/02/2025 23:47

I also agree with @OonaStubbs and others. We need to have a serious overhaul about our nation's thinking about dogs. It can not be that they are held in such high regard, that has led to the situation we are now in where people are baulking at the idea of culling breeds, but oh, no, we can't do that because they are precious dogs. It's like a cult. Dogs are a menace, and I absolutely detest them. Too many people getting bitten, knocked over, scratched. It is in sane to me that we welcome these beasts to live among us. At the very least get rid of the big breeds.

Water does absolutely nothing according to the many videos- even bear spray in the eyes and up the XL's nose does nothing.

choking it out using a collar high around the neck where it joins the head or a lever used between it's teeth is meant to be the only way- apart from a powerful weapon {firearm} aimed at the dog's chest, NOT the head - {useless advice for UK where guns are illegal for the average man and woman}.

WTF! Cared more about her dead dog that her own cousin. This is the mentality of dog people. We are headed to depraved depths of humanity.

The "ban" is not working.
How about a totally new approach.
ALL dogs banned except certain breeds which must be bought from licensed breeders .
There would still be a lot of scope for different breeds for pets/ working dogs etc. but absolutely no more unlicensed breeders.
All dogs chipped and if found not to be legal they are impounded and PTS.

Yes - this would be an excellent start.

I'd also ban people from having more than one per adult.

No more spending tax money on shelters and homing offending dogs (last figure I saw was £1m for housing XLs waiting for assesments in one borough alone! MADNESS!)

NOT ''dog people''..I own a small gentle dog , and absolutely detest these aggressive breeds and their generally moronic owners who have no control and not one braincell between them.

It's specifically the antisocial idiots who are drawn to these aggressive antisocial breeds who care more about their dead eyed ''hippo'' than a child or other breed of dog.

Mia Derouen {Aged 4} mother's new boyfriend brought his XL Bully to live with them.

''He was her dawg, he was so sweet to her''....until one day he slaughtered her without warning.

This is a dog who is related to many in UK who are killing people.

I despair because any one of us could be innocently walking along the street and be attacked or killed by one. The government needs to do something and urgently.

Too many thick and selfish people in this country. As a nation do we breed more idiots?

Yeah except when it acts like a dog based on natural instinct and kills someone. Sure chihuahuas bite too but they don’t kill you. This view is deluded. Do you think the dog cares what employment its owners have?

CorduroySituation · 28/02/2025 00:04

Actually @BattIestar and @OonaStubbs I am a dog owner and lover, I'm not joining in your hatred and frothing about ALL dogs.

Dogs bring great joy, companionship and love to millions of people. Normal dogs that is, and that includes dogs like GSD (super loyal and very smart) and rotties (amazing).

But I do believe XLB's are complete killing machines, totally unsafe, genetically unstable and the breed should be euthanised.

Calling it 'frothing' when people say they don't like dogs is so ridiculous, and a cheap derogatory shot. Do better.

Dogs are filthy, slobbery, shitting machines who piss all over our pavements, and are a noise nuisance. Some of them worse than others. It's the mark of a failing society when people are relying on dogs rather than their fellow humans for joy, companionship and love. Dogs don't love. They just like you for the food you offer, and the shelter you provide.

Was wondering about vets earlier but I think because of their classification now they’d need to be sedated at the vets. Not sure how it works if they’re muzzled and they’re in for a minor thing though 🤔

I work in a vets, and we don't sedate XLs for routine consults. The few that we have had in for neutering following the ban, we have treated like any other dog, albeit keeping their muzzles on prior to anaesthesia.

My friends 84 year old dad was attacked in Warrington. He's touch and go.

Cull the bloody lot! And if you own one of these dogs and it attacks, you should be jailed.

Love is just a rush of oxytocin, and dogs can and do feel that too. As humans, we can put words to that feeling. Just because dogs can't, does not mean they don't feel it.
