Woman 19 dies in dog attack in Bristol

Apologies if there’s already a thread on this, but how many more lives have to be taken in these horrific attacks before the Government admit that the current measures are failing. It surely has come to the point now that all XL Bullies should be euthanised.

One thing I cannot understand is why any owner who says an XL Bully is ‘like any other dog’, owns one? If they are like any other dog….. just get a different dog?

Normallynumb · 27/02/2025 21:52

This came up on my local news
A neighbour of the girl was interviewed and the dog is walked nearby daily but the owners said to her" Don't worry, he's friendly"... until he wasn't
Makes me sick
These dogs are a lethal weapon bought by idiots who have no idea how to handle them. Akin to a Zombie knife in their pockets
Instant euthanasia for all, in my opinion, no exception... even for the poster above with the police handler DH
The police aren't armed with guns here either

Wanted to add: People will still keep these rigs even if a full ban is issued. They will call them another name and it's difficult to prove it is an xl. No one is going to be policing this so unless someone reports the right people will keep having them. People are ignoring the current laws and nothing is being done. It's unlikely neighbours are going to report these dogs. They are not reporting the unmuzzled ones. It might force more people to hide them in doors all the time and that will just make the situation worse when the dogs get so bored and stir crazy. People are still breeding them as I have seen puppies that look very close to xl type. I don't know what the answer is.

'I feel for Kelcie so much, it wasn't her fault and also it was her pet. I just feel it was one of those freak accidents.

And it was also her cousin!

It shows the deranged level of thinking on these estates- Police = Bad
Vicious type of dog =Nanny dog ( the nanny dog is a myth. - Pit bulls were NEVER used historically to look after children- in fact a breeder of Pit Bulls, Colby, lost a nephew and an adult male to his pitbulls.

At least if they are kept indoors the innocent passersby people walking their Children and pet dogs on the street will be safer.

However the indoor attacks could well include innocent children calling round, like sweet innocent Jack Lees.

Pelot · 27/02/2025 22:09

The uk has no money for even the most routine policing. This would take a huge amount of resource and would face serious opposition. It's just not going to happen.

The police shouldn't have to prove it! Just shoot them on sight! Why do we care about the rights of dogs? The rights of humans not to be attacked should take precedence!

Couldn’t agree more! Like when people whitter on that their dog is being “discriminated” against because of its breed. It’s a bloomin’ DOG - get over yourself!

A woman on our local FB page posted with a moan about how other folks would cross the road or pull their dog away from her XL.

Along with pics of this thing rolling round the living room floor with her kids.

The amount of replies saying how sweet the dog looked ! Shock and oooh how awful people are to swerve her. How they'd make a point of fussing over her in future ...

I now see that the average IQ of the villagers here is lower than i thought ...

Laiste · 27/02/2025 22:23

AND it got me thinking about how i'd handle it if any future friends of my DC has one at home.

How to word it.

Sorry, we have a problem with the breed of dog you have but would be more than happy for little x, y z to come to us for tea instead. ?

Judging by the amount of FB replies fawning over this XL recently i'm sure i'd be seen as up my own arse, but i'd rather that than risk my kid having her face torn off.

Put the bloody things down.

CarrieOnComplaining · 27/02/2025 22:27

The current law was a pathetic and irresponsible cop out, has given the police an impossible job and left the public at risk.

It’s really difficult to expect police to be able to identify a dog breed when out on the street. Massive waste of police resources checking is it or isn’t it.

The muzzling law leaves children within a house vulnerable and a dog can always escape…

The ones I see near me are non-castrated males. Obviously illegal breeding is taking place.

It’s out of control.

Time for a complete cull and ban.

Saw them described as loaded gun which I think is very apt.

One of my neighbours has one, and I call it a smouldering Molotov cocktail.

k1233 · 27/02/2025 22:38

Hmm, looks like the compulsory muzzle work really well...

My friend is a XL bully owner, her DH is a police dog trainer. In the right hands these dogs are no different to any other large breed. Yeah I know not all are owned by people with his experience and capabilities. He's a much loved, well behaved family pet and very affectionate dog who tends to drool on you a lot.

Until it’s not…. and therein lies the problem.

hermionegrunge · 27/02/2025 22:47

There's a woman on Tik Tok with a spotty XL and she's always doing piss take videos about how aggressive he is (NOT) basically very sarcastic stuff. I really want to comment along the lines of yeah it's all very funny until he turns on you. But it's not worth it for all the 'owner not breed' morons I'd attract.

FWIW I own a bull breed and even I think all XLs should be put down. They are not comparable to any other dog. They're monsters.

Partybaggage · 27/02/2025 22:48

Looking at the Facebook page of the dogs owner, she was one of those who was trying to arrange for these monsters to be sent to Scotland to be rehomed when the ban was enacted.

Same with my local page. 2 XL bullies went for each other with the owner’s new baby less than 1/2 metre away and the dozens of replies are along the lines of ‘Ah poor things. Maybe one is feeling poorly’ and streams of dog Trainer recommendations. So many pro messages re ‘Any dog can turn’ and someone even posted ‘ Every being squabbles, fingers crossed things sort themselves’. Others defending them saying ‘Bless ‘em’ , ‘They are the softest breed’ and saying it’s a ridiculous ban. The owner was looking for advice as she thinks it could be down to jealously of the new baby but there is more concern regarding these animals than any regard for the children in the home!

DZXX · 27/02/2025 22:56

DeFook · 27/02/2025 20:54

Really important that if a dog gets hold of your child, do not pull or let others pull the dog as it can make the injuries worse, if not fatal. Have someone lift the attacking dog by up their back legs, this is where all their pulling power is and reduces the damage they can cause, then try to prize open their mouth with a stick / pole or whatever you can find.

If this fails - You can try to hit them in the balls if they have them / kick them or punch them in the side of their abdomen / strangle them until they pass out / hit them over the head with a rock or heavy item to make them pass out. These are all horrific things to do, especially if you are an animal lover, but your child could die.

Some dogs will respond to food and let go, so if you have food on you, that’s worth a try. Also, as hard as it may be, last ditch attempt could be to try stroking the dog in a sweet voice as it might confuse them and make them see you as not a threat and release their grip.

Dog attacks are terrifying. Having some things to try can really save lives.

My dogs used to fight with each other, just like small scraps but they’re both big dogs so it could get quite intense before either of them were castrated (both labs, not XL bullies). The one thing that worked every time to shock them and make them stop was to throw a glass of water over them. They haven’t had any of their little spats in years luckily since they were castrated but I’ve thought that could also work to buy a bit of time in a dog attack (if you have a bottle of water anyway)!

Edited

Same with this story though. More concern and sympathy to the dog and the breed more then the fact someone has lost their life. More awww sad thats happened but the dogs are fine!

I was waiting for the vet in Pets at Home a few weeks ago and a guy with an XL was waiting to see the vet. The dog was muzzled but was just growling and haunched up. His owner was right in front of him stroking him behind his ears and saying 'calm down, calm down' over and over again,, but the dog at least 3 times, went a bit crazy barking, growling trying to get away and he had to restrain it. Especially when someone walked in with another dog.

It was fucking terrifying.

I was so glad I didn't have a cat or dog or child with me - I was just picking up a prescription.

I felt so sorry for any vet would might have to unmuzzle the dog and check its mouth for example. How can they even do that safely?
It's not fair on the vets. They are being put in a very, very awkward and dangerous position.

I don't think water would do anything at all with XL's.

The police fired 19 bullets into the two XL's that attacked the 84 year old on Tuesday - they only stopped attacking after being shot nearly 10 times each.

Was wondering about vets earlier but I think because of their classification now they’d need to be sedated at the vets. Not sure how it works if they’re muzzled and they’re in for a minor thing though 🤔

ThankyouBakedP0tato · 27/02/2025 23:06

I know - you can't really sedate an XL every time they need their noses, mouths, teeth and gums checked over.

That’s what they all say about the dog that’s killed their child/member of family/friend/neighbour

I hope you friends do not have children if they are do they are recklessly stupid
