Woman 19 dies in dog attack in Bristol

Apologies if there’s already a thread on this, but how many more lives have to be taken in these horrific attacks before the Government admit that the current measures are failing. It surely has come to the point now that all XL Bullies should be euthanised.

One of the things that disturbs me most about XLs is that when you do hear these cases of a beloved family pet "snapping" and turning on the family, it always seems to be a woman or a child they've attacked. I mean, overwhelmingly. I struggle to think of a case where it was the man of the house an XL went for.

Most dogs are the other way around - protective of women and children and suspicious of men. It suggests the animal's instincts have gone awry somehow, and that makes me nervous of the whole breed

This is very true, the majority of times it is a woman or a child.

None of that works with an XL.... You might as well try and stop a bear with a twig.

If i see one of these type of dogs, i cross the road to avoid them... if i couldn't do that, i turn around and walk back until i could.

Awful dogs.

I’ve only ever come across a very placid and well socialised one, so I can’t say I have experienced anything bad from them but the stories speak for themselves and it isn’t a coincidence. They seem to be the furthest from domestication than any of the other breeds we are used to and their strength is staggering.

"They killed my dog!!" 🤦🏼‍♀️

I don't. Dogs rarely attack out of the blue. It is usually after they have displayed certain body language, and a bite is the last resort. It is the ultimate "leave me alone".

I know a chap whose deaf dog bit a child. His dog was fast asleep, and the child sat on on the dog, startling it, and it bit the kid on the face.
Was that dog dangerous, and needing to be destroyed? Or was it reacting normally?

Why were the parents / owner not supervising the child?

Someone is to blame.

This is the sort of dangerous view that leads to dog attacks. A pet is not suitable if it has ANY potential to bite or attack in whatever circumstances. And if it cannot coexist with children then it should be rehomed.

I know for a fact that when faced with the possible death of your child or yourself from an XL bully, people have come up with some immense strength and clarity of mind and been able to manage the Situation.

I like to believe that your post is just naive, not that you seriously believe that it’s possible to in anyway defend yourself against an XL bully. Maybe if your lucky and there are enough people around to help you to escape but a woman trying to defend a child is really not going to stand a chance.

I don't understand this country's obsession with dogs. They are only animals. If any other animal was killing so many people, there'd have been a cull by now.

Following your logic, we need a cull of humans.

LandSharksAnonymous · 27/02/2025 21:28

Reading this thread is so very interesting tbh. It’s definitely reinforcing my view that 99.8% of people have no clue about dogs and are idiots. 0.1% are just idiots, full stop. And 0.1% have a brain.

The idiocy of humans astounds me. Sometimes I wonder how we all still exist - natural selection should have finished us off years ago.

Wordau · 27/02/2025 21:28

The thing is a lot of the sort of people who would want an XL bully don't give a shit about laws or licences.

In this case the woman didn't take her bully out for walks (presumably as she didn't want to muzzle it, but maybe she's just a shit dog owner) and didn't have it registered. So licences and the like would make zero difference. There would still be a black market for dangerous dogs. Maybe it would reduce numbers slightly.

I'd bet money on breeders still breeding XL even though it's illegal. If you can make money out of it, people will do it.

If I see one of these dogs I'd cross the street or leave the park immediately.

HornyHornersPinger · 27/02/2025 21:16

Her dog literally mauled her cousin to death and she's shouting that "they killed my dog"?!? A dog she's presumably just watched inflict hideous pain and suffering, ending in death??

There are no words for some people.

Anecdotally my husband's uncle was bitten very badly a couple of months ago by his neighbours XL bully, he was in hospital for almost 2 weeks, has had to have several surgeries and will be lucky to be able to walk normally again. He's a big man too, if it had been a child they'd probably have been killed.

oakleaffy · 27/02/2025 21:32

HornyHornersPinger · 27/02/2025 21:16

So she is ONLY screaming and crying that her violent killer dog has been put to sleep by a vet-

She didn’t mention her poor cousin who was slaughtered so terribly.

Pit owners are not like other dog owners- they are completely antisocial and irresponsible.

Neighbours said it was never walked- just taken into the yard to relieve itself and then taken indoors again.

SweetPea201 · 27/02/2025 21:34

These dogs give me anxiety, luckily I haven't come across one when out and about. (yet) Genuinely would feel terrified if I saw one when out with my children, in fact in half term we were at the park and I clocked a dog off lead on its way over, at first glance I thought it was an XL and could feel my heart racing, when it got closer realised it wasn't thank god, may seem over the top to some but they really really scare me.
And I have a GSD. so not afraid of dogs. I've been around Rottweilers & Staffys but think XL bully's are something else. It is the breed, it's in their DNA to kill. They are almost impossible to stop once they attack. That is terrifying.
On that basis 100% wish they could all be PTS!

ACynicalDad · 27/02/2025 21:35

The breed will naturally disappear in the UK over the next few years, as dogs die and the breeding ban means no replacement. There absolutely does need to be a focus on enforcing the law in the meantime IMO

There are still plenty of the first four breeds to be banned that have exemption certificates, I have no idea how though. Whilst I'd like them all culled tomorrow I can't see how any new exemption certificated should be being issued now, let alone in ten years time.

Also from that article "Police were at the property all night and at one point a man and his dog turned up to accuse them of animal cruelty shouting 'it's a disgrace'. He was warned he would be arrested if he continued his protest."

Animal cruelty???

YourWinter · 27/02/2025 21:36

greyeyedwonder · 27/02/2025 14:31

My friend is a XL bully owner, her DH is a police dog trainer. In the right hands these dogs are no different to any other large breed. Yeah I know not all are owned by people with his experience and capabilities. He's a much loved, well behaved family pet and very affectionate dog who tends to drool on you a lot.

But they ARE “different from any other large breed”, except the small number of other large breeds that have also been specifically bred for aggression, with very intentional in-breeding and line-breeding to maximise that specific trait. That neither your friend, her husband, nor you in her defence, can understand that is one of the reasons we are where we are. And why so many children and adults, known to the dog or complete strangers, have died unimaginably horrific deaths at the jaws of a breed that absolutely has to be wiped out.

That’s why they had a riot van there all night.

Any excuse to have a go at police, yet it’s almost always Council Estates that have these XLB’s in.

Araminta from
a nice place in the Shires wouldn’t have one.

'I feel for Kelcie so much, it wasn't her fault and also it was her pet. I just feel it was one of those freak accidents.

And it was also her cousin!

I am a dog lover. These aren’t dogs. They are genetically programmed killing machines.

ArtTheClown · 27/02/2025 21:42

"They killed my dog!!" 🤦🏼‍♀️

Fucking sociopath. At least the dog had the luxury of a humane death, unlike her actual relative.

ArtTheClown · 27/02/2025 21:44

I know what you mean. I look at those things with their thick, weirdly muscled heads, and their cold piggy eyes, and I just feel revulsion.
Any sane dog lover should hate them, they kill people's beloved pet dogs regularly.

geekygardener · 27/02/2025 21:46

Sorry but the police are useless with this and I don't even think a ban will solve it. My neighbour has two which have attacked people twice when they escaped the house. One was ordered to be put to sleep but he passed it to his cousin and it was never checked up on. He claimed the other is something else called another bully name. I have reported it for aggression to my own small dc probably 10 times. The police told me they think it's fine as it initially barked on their visit but calmed down after a while. I did explain that they are grown men and it acting aggressive to small dc was more worrying. Despite the remaining one taking part in the attacks, it was left off due to insufficient evidence. One of the victims had half his stomach ripped out ! The police may as well have laughed in my face when they told me they thought the dog was "alright" and I responded in tears. I can't wait for the thing to die

Carinattheliqorstore1 · 27/02/2025 21:48

I wouldn’t say I’m a dog person (although we had a lovely dog for years who I adored), but the idea of putting dogs to sleep who haven’t done anything wrong feels so sad.

but then again, we wouldn’t be allowing people to have pet lions. This really can’t be allowed to continue.
