To think something needs to be done about all these dog attacks?

And if so, what? What is the solution? My kids witnessed an attack recently, it hasn't yet made the news, and it wasn't deadly nor did the victims require overnighting at hospital, but my children are now wary of walking to school, and being in the playpark. I hate that we are living in fear of dangerous dogs, and really think it is high time something proper was done about it.

The above are all very recent incidents, which I found when I was looking to see if the one my kids and I saw had made the news. I bet there are many more thst don't get reported too. And then we have the crazies spouting "it's the owner not the breed", or "something must have provoked it". In the incident we saw, the dog bolted out of its owner's front door and jumped up at a stranger walking along, knocking them over and mouthing their sleeve - I think the only reason it wasn't worse than it was is because the guy had a very thick coat on. If that had been my kids in their thin blazer uniform, I dread to think.

I think we need to get tougher on owners - any dog bites anyone, the owner goes to jail as if it were them who directly caused the injury.

I also think we need to actually properly ban the top dangerous breeds (we all know which they are).

These were the comments on a local Facebook group when an XL owner was worried her XL dog was being harassed and would be the one in trouble if it snapped.
I have to live in the same town as these idiots.......

I have the same kind of thing. I fear for humanity!

You can't destroy a dog that has done nothing wrong. Yes, the attacks from XL bully's have been awful, but there are also XL bully's that have done nothing wrong. The owners have done all the right things, and the dogs have great temperament. Not all will go on to attack, and it wont be fair on the innocent dogs and owners to have them seized, probably traumatically, and put to sleep after months in police kennels.

No owner of an XL Bully has done the right thing. The fact that they have these dogs at all shows how bad their judgement is. These dogs are on the whole owned by the thick and the feckless. They should all be put down. There is more than enough evidence that it is indeed breed in this case.

Either that or the police need some marksmanship training

Your comment is in very poor taste. Every one of the 19 bullets hit the targets. It took 19 bullets being shot into 2 dogs to stop an attack. Stop and have a think about that. An innocent 84 year old man attacked by two beasts that literally could not be stopped without extreme force.

These are the comments on sky news about the latest dog that caused a death:

"I do feel so sad for the dog owner," she said.
"She did mention the dog wasn't great with men, fine with women and children.
"I feel for her so, so much. It wasn't her fault."
She added: "I genuinely feel that this was one of those freak accidents and wasn't her fault - that's how I feel."

Update: the 84 year old man attacked in Warrington last month has now died of his injuries. What an utterly awful way to die. My condolences to his loved ones. Poor man.

Thanks for posting this update @BattIestar
I am appalled and I despair of these dreadful & lethal creatures😟

Breezybetty · 31/03/2025 18:33

Our council recently ran a survey to find out whether people wanted dogs to be banned / forced onto leads in parklands and dog exercise areas made. Excellent idea I thought. Dog owners were outraged.

We need safe, dog free places to exercise, play and relax.

I dont disagree but no-one is safe from these pitbull type dogs, they break out of places in order to attack & kill people.

Interesting. What were the results?

@mellowTiger I trust her completely but I would never leave her with my grandson alone

All your posts on here are measured and articulate, so I don't want to suggest you're not thoughtful about this.

But - this is staggering to me. You are happy to have a dog that you would never leave alone with your grandchild?

Not quite the same as a council, but our local health club/hotel ran a poll of members asking if we wanted to allow dogs on site. It was a resounding NO. I think dog people are just very loud, but most people don't want to be inundated with dogs. It's gotten too much. I love going there - it is clean, don't have to worry about my kids at the play area, no worrying about standing in dog poo or pee, and relaxing that there are no XL bull breeds, as they wouldn't get in the door.

We live near some really quiet woods where I can go running without any hassle from dogs as there is no parking nearby. Unfortunately a new build estate is due to be plonked nearby so my days are numbered. Gutted!

NewMarmiteJar · 31/03/2025 22:31

Saw a local guy with quite serious mental health problems proudly walking his new young XL bully this week telling it “good girl, lovely girl” and my heart sank. How are these dogs so easily available? It’s the second time this month I’ve seen a young XL. All I can think when I see them is how easily it could rip me or DS apart if it wanted. Fucking terrifying.

NewMarmiteJar · 31/03/2025 22:33

cadburyegg · 25/02/2025 22:49

I agree. Dogs that bite once should be put down. There is a dog in a neighbouring village that has bitten several people and has been reported but the authorities don't know who the dog belongs to. There should be some kind of dog licensing and tracking system that makes it easier to identify dogs and ensures only screened owners can own one. It should be illegal to breed dogs unless you're a licensed breeder. All dogs should be spayed / neutered by a certain age unless you're a licensed breeder.

And all cane corsos and XL bullies should be put down. There are plenty of other breeds.

We will look back in years to come and be horrified what we exposed children to.

Exactly this.

CroissantOfFur · 31/03/2025 22:38

Close down these puppy mills breeding these fighting breeds.

Bring back the dog licence.

So many dogs being destroyed because inhumane treatment or inbreeding has made them aggressive. Humans ruin dogs. Humans suck.

NewMarmiteJar · 31/03/2025 22:41

Guide dogs, ones that dismantle bombs, or it’s that in films? Sniffer dogs, sheepdogs that actually work as such, pets as therapy, one that can sniff cancer, ones that can sense danger to the vulnerable, guard dogs…they all contribute to society to whoever upstream said they don’t.

Moglet4 · 31/03/2025 20:58

It really is. It has actually hammered home to me all the more how dogs are a risk I don't think should be imposed on the rest of us, because I am SO relaxed when I am there with my children, and am happy for them to run around, without my worrying about a pitbull leaping out to maul them.
