To think something needs to be done about all these dog attacks?

And if so, what? What is the solution? My kids witnessed an attack recently, it hasn't yet made the news, and it wasn't deadly nor did the victims require overnighting at hospital, but my children are now wary of walking to school, and being in the playpark. I hate that we are living in fear of dangerous dogs, and really think it is high time something proper was done about it.

The above are all very recent incidents, which I found when I was looking to see if the one my kids and I saw had made the news. I bet there are many more thst don't get reported too. And then we have the crazies spouting "it's the owner not the breed", or "something must have provoked it". In the incident we saw, the dog bolted out of its owner's front door and jumped up at a stranger walking along, knocking them over and mouthing their sleeve - I think the only reason it wasn't worse than it was is because the guy had a very thick coat on. If that had been my kids in their thin blazer uniform, I dread to think.

I think we need to get tougher on owners - any dog bites anyone, the owner goes to jail as if it were them who directly caused the injury.

I also think we need to actually properly ban the top dangerous breeds (we all know which they are).

@BattIestar those two attacks that you posted links to today, both seem to be involving animals which were loose. I wonder if people are abandoning pbt dogs?

WhatNoRaisins · 28/02/2025 11:57

I get that for some people dog ownership is beneficial to their mental health and life enjoyment. I don't see why it has to be one of these very muscular and hard to control breeds. The risk is too high with them.

SerendipityJane · 28/02/2025 11:59

The best way of dealing with dog attacks is to get some therapy and make your peace with them.

If anything was going to be done, it would have by now. As I posted last year. And 2023. And 2022. And 2021.

They are often the type of owners who would do that, but also be lax re containment. Very often they say "oh, he just got out". Not acceptable.

In fb groups, in my area, I'd say 80% of the "help, my dog ran off" posts are from bully breed owners.

I can't do that. I have children, and I worry about them now, and for their future.

Maybe the people who have a hole in their life or an inferiority complex that they feel the need to own an aggressive dangerous dog should get the therapy.

I can't get over that reference to how the woman was screaming that they killed her dog. This dog had just horribly killed a 19 year old girl and her concern is for the dog?

That's what dog people are like, they care more about their dogs than they do about other humans.
They believe that dogs are morally superior to humans because they don't lie and cheat etc. Of course this is a nonsense, dogs do not have the cognitive capacity to make moral choices, they don't lie, cheat etc because don't have the cognitive capacity to outwit humans.

Maybe look into medication ?

Call me a twat, but - as I said already - if there was the will to stop these attacks, then it would have happened by now. It hasn't. And it won't. As I pointed out last year. And the year before ...

Am I happy ? No.

That's a mental illness to me.

ClassicBBQ · 28/02/2025 12:12

A lot of dogs don't get the exercise and stimulation they need. I'm by no means a fan of XL bully dogs, but they really aren't a breed designed to be confined to a house. I have a working type dog and he would go insane being unable to run or play with other dogs.

Dogs are being treated like babies nowadays and tend to get whatever they want, whenever they want. I love my dog very much, but he is not my child and he comes below my actual children. We don't snuggle all day on the sofa on rainy days and he isn't allowed on my bed or to eat off my plate. Boundaries are so important.

I think it's more to do with lack of education, being at the bottom of society, that kind of thing.

Things do change, it will take a lot of pressure, but we can get there.

A relative was instrumental in the 80s with her anti smoking in public campaign. Obviously it took about 30 years, but my children are growing up where smoking is banned indoors. That's progress.

If all dog owners were like you, the country would be better off.

I can remember when rottweilers were the devil dogs. And before that German Shepherds.

And since dogs are now allowed everywhere - quite a shift since 1995 - then the problem is growing, not receding. We haven't yet reached peak dog.

Mrsbloggz · 28/02/2025 12:20

We need proper legislation in regards to dog ownership. I agree that dogs are important human companion animals, but I think the pet industry needs to be brought under control; it knows that the best way to make money out of people is to encourage them to see their pets as equivalent to humans.

Same. And you are right. But I do think we are getting there. It may take one higher profile death, say, a celebrity or politician's child, but we just can't go on like this.

The Dangerous Dogs Act was passed in 1991 - over 30 years ago - and still nothing has changed.

People still want these totally unsuitable dogs, and unscrupulous people are still able to breed and sell them and go unpunished. Unless the penalties and prosecutions are ramped up this will continue.

What exactly would that look like? A ban on dog treats that look like cakes? A ban on dog coats?

BattIestar · 25/02/2025 22:50

I saw that! If it takes 19 bullets to stop them, what hope have we, as unarmed people got?

Either that or the police need some marksmanship training

BattIestar · 28/02/2025 12:54

From
https://blog.dogsbite.org/2014/03/2014-dog-bite-fatality-family-pit-bull-kills-houma-girl.html

"The second pit bull, Khloe, was not involved in the violent attack on March 25 that took the life of a little girl and ended after police officers fired 12-13 bullets into the 130-pound pit bull named Niko."

It is nigh on impossible to stop these beasts, a dozen+ bullets and they are still rampaging. It's like they actually like the pain, it drives them even more.

Edit: meant to quote above post.

I'd start by banning them from restaurants and cafes.

These were the comments on a local Facebook group when an XL owner was worried her XL dog was being harassed and would be the one in trouble if it snapped.
I have to live in the same town as these idiots.......
