To find the gym attire of some women completely inappropriate?

Apolo90 · 24/02/2025 19:39

I went to the gym with a work colleague after work; it’s the first time I’ve been to that particular one.

I was taken aback by the number of women wearing either the tightest leggings imaginable, barely there sports bra’s and/or shorts which wouldn’t look out of place on the beach they were that sparse.

Is this really appropriate? I’m far from a prude but I like to exercise without being forced to stare at someone’s bottom squeezed into impossibly tight clothing.

Maybe I’m just getting old.

I've heard such outfits called 'gym lingerie'.

I'm not sure breast feeding in public and scrunch bum leggings are the same

The over sexualising of a womans body and the policing of a womans body when she isn't doing sexual things is the same though. And the attitudes are absolutely linked.

I really find the faux naievity of women who dress in extremely revealing clothing absolutely ridiculous.
It's everybody else's problem for being uncomfortable, nothing at all to do with the inappropriateness of the clothing they are wearing.

Are the leotards gymnasts wear inappropriate? Or the sports bras and tiny gym knickers worn by marathon runners? Or swimming costumes? Your blood pressure must be through the roof during the Olympics 🙄

If a woman wears revealing clothes, she is only revealing parts of a body. A body, that's it, we all have one.

So, when other people start sexualising her body, and she's not asked them to do so, she has every right to complain.

Are you one of those people who blame the rape victim because she was wearing a short skirt?

Go and learn about misogyny and, especially if you are a woman, internalized misogyny. Unlearn your old fashioned sexist ideas. Your views and ideas are prehistoric.

I also have no interest in your replies, especially your 'unapologetic' ones 🙄 unless you're telling me you have educated yourself and have changed your views.

Are you honestly saying that if you walked down the street showing off your boobs or butt for example and you noticed men gawping at you, that you would be offended at them looking? Because they may potentially be appreciating your body in a sexual way.

And no one is saying that if a woman wears provocative clothing it's ok for men to attack her. No one is saying that!

I agree. There is no practical reason to be wearing a sports bra and leggings with no top. It's just a reflection of the desperate world we live in now. Sad for those women that they feel the need to display themselves so obviously, it's the same at the pool with the thong bikinis. Society has nose-dived so fast in recent years.

Iwanttoliveonamountain · 24/02/2025 21:08

Overtheatlantic · 24/02/2025 19:42

I agree but that’s just the way some women like to dress. I don’t like to see men in tight or barely there clothing either.

Edited

Yeah, it’s weird that men in gyms don’t need to wear that kind of stuff. Wonder why that is?

itsgettingweird · 24/02/2025 21:09

Lots of people wear a sports bra and those up your crack leggings or shorts at my gym.

Can't deny I'm often Hmm but in truth I'm just jealous 😂😂

The only leggings up the arse look I get is my fat backside eating them 🫣

ArtfulMentor · 24/02/2025 21:09

It's the scrunch-bum leggings thread all over again...

https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/4618898-scrunch-bum-leggings-while-teaching-children

Just let people wear what's comfortable for them.

Has it ever crossed your mind that it’s because they are fucking hot??! It’s so weird to immediately think that a woman is gagging for a shag rather than that she’s hot while exercising.
It’s just misogyny, plain and simple.

Although only one is serving a useful purpose

I would argue that exercise is a useful purpose given that it's something we do for health benefits. And they are wearing clothing designed to work for exercise while doing exercise. So...

Plus if you really want to go down the rabbit hole, some women like my mother would argue that there's no need to breastfeed now given that we have formula. This was the exact reason why she chose to formula feed, and why she assumed that if I breastfed infront of men in public their wives would assume I was trying to flash them. So where exactly do you think this ends? There is absolutely zero win for women when how we are dressing is policed. Zero win.

Bit of jealousy on this thread from People who don’t have the confidence to wear anything not from Fat Face and Boden

Well, that's up to you as a parent to decide what you feel is appropriate while your daughter(s) are not adults still live at home.

MasterBeth · 24/02/2025 19:41

What are they supposed to wear, an Aertex blouse and their PE skirt?

Surely gym knickers with your aertex blouse

XxSideshowAuntSallyx · 24/02/2025 21:15

I wear running tights as they're comfortable and don't fall down. I'd never just wear a bra as no one needs to see my flab and I have some decent gym tops that hide that.

But I seem to go to the gym at a time when it's popular with men so I don't see many women there so can't judge on what they wear.

Well scrunch bum leggings do look lovely on 14 year olds, and v practical

Scrunch bum leggings are definitely sexual

We used to work out like this minus the socks in the 1990s https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/1767523015/nike-gymnastics-bodywear-vintage-thong?ga_order=most_relevant&ga_search_type=all&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_search_query=1990s+thong+leotard&ref=sr_gallery-2-3&content_source=f49e1539c35b7987b6631356bf49db7cb244d296%253A1767523015&organic_search_click=1&logging_key=f49e1539c35b7987b6631356bf49db7cb244d296%3A1767523015

I remember very clearly going to a slide class once a week in the mid 1990s and walking to and from the place dressed like this. My leotard was brighter coloured, almost psychedelic with contrasting coloured cycling shorts.

This is wrong. I am a runner, gym goer and triathlete. I went to the gym today....I ran intervals did weights and sweatted....a lot...so I stripped down to my sports bra.... I then sweatted less....I was wearing leggings and a tightly fitted top so they wouldn't chafe or catch in the weights. Doing press ups or a plank or rdls plank in a loose top doesn't work...it gaps.....most of these posts from women condemning tightly fitted gym clothing know nothing about proper exercise 🙄 . I couldn't tell you what a single other person was wearing.....do you know why? Nothing to do with me...as long as it works for them!

Loub1987 · 24/02/2025 21:17

When I (rarely) go to the gym, I go swimming. At first I found it really odd that women were wearing quite skimpy bikinis in a gym pool, not really practical for exercise. On reflection, they look great and I am probably just jealous. Meanwhile, I squeeze my post two c section body into what can only be described as a Victorian swimming ensemble and wish I had of worn a bikini much more in my youth.

Good on them, everyone should wear what they like and are comfortable in. Gyms are intimidating enough without judging clothes.

Not comparable. Most breastfeeding women, in fact all I have ever seen, have done their best to be a discreet as possible. This is the opposite of wearing clothing engineered to enhance an emphasise one's butt cheeks, like some baboon in heat.

I can assure you that wearing a sports bra with no top with no top over it after a really hard work out feels fucking incredible. I say that as a not very slim person. I do not want a hot sweaty top flapping about.
You wear what you want, I'll wear what I want, we both just get on with it, how about that?

It’s sad that you feel the need to persist with regressive stereotyping and misogyny, men do a brilliant job of it, they don’t need your assistance.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 24/02/2025 21:18

Tbf I do run in my bra and leggings and if it wasn't for cellulite I'd wear short shorts as it's boiling hot in there where the treadmills are. Each to their own. I saw a man once on the treadmill in trousers, shirt and dress shoes 🙄
