To find the gym attire of some women completely inappropriate?

I went to the gym with a work colleague after work; it’s the first time I’ve been to that particular one.

I was taken aback by the number of women wearing either the tightest leggings imaginable, barely there sports bra’s and/or shorts which wouldn’t look out of place on the beach they were that sparse.

Is this really appropriate? I’m far from a prude but I like to exercise without being forced to stare at someone’s bottom squeezed into impossibly tight clothing.

Maybe I’m just getting old.

Well I'm heartily fed up of seeing women and teenage girls wearing clothes that are barely decent.

It's the height of hypocrisy for women to complain that they are viewed purely in a sexual way when they they wear clothes that are designed to reveal as much of their bodies as possible.

I'm amazed anyone batted an eyelid at Bianca at the Grammys because that's the next logical step when you see how much a lot of women think it's appropriate to reveal on a day to day basis in real life.

And no, I don't want to go back to Victorian times.

@SerafinasGoose Here we are again, defending women's right to choose what they wear against those who seem to want morality police beating women into submission because they choose differently to them.

I agree but that’s just the way some women like to dress. I don’t like to see men in tight or barely there clothing either.

Edited

Really?! I’ve seen men with skimpy vests, a few with their shirts off completely, and also in tight leggings. Doesn’t really bother me as I just get on with it and listen to music, maybe I should perv a bit more!

TheAmusedQuail · 24/02/2025 19:57

It depends on the type of gym, the customer demographic and the time of day you attend I think. At some times of day, a gym I used to go to was full of look-at-me types and was a bit of a pick up joint. Whereas early morning or weekday lunchtime it was full of more functional workout types.

TBH, even as a het woman, I'd rather see skimpily dressed girls than sweaty muscle tops and too-short shorts on blokes. At least the girls don't sweat all over the equipment. Very off putting getting on a machine after that.

MasterBeth · 24/02/2025 19:41

What are they supposed to wear, an Aertex blouse and their PE skirt?

This made me laugh then have PE skirt flashbacks 😳

Op of course people wear skimpy clothes to the gym, was it a female gym because I'm sure the men would have had tiny tight shorts on.

LadyTable · 24/02/2025 19:41

No-one's forcing you to stare at anyone's arse.

Don't be so rude and weird.

If they're happy and comfortable that's all that matters, not your delicate eyes.

The problem is it’s hard to avoid seeing the arses sometimes. Would you be as supportive of a 23 stone man in tight Lycra shorts and t shirt?

hoodiemassive · 24/02/2025 20:00

I work at a gym and love the way women feel comfortable enough to wear clothing that they feel confident in.

This generation is all about shape not size and they look so much better than I used to in baggy, dull work out gear.

Blueuggboots · 24/02/2025 20:01

I'm horrified every time I see someone in a thing swimming costume/bikini at the gym....yes, if you're in Copacabana beach if you have to, but not at the pool in a gym!!! I do NOT need to see your bum cheeks!

Ameliepoulainandthephotobooth · 24/02/2025 20:01

Apolo90 · 24/02/2025 19:45

The group of young lads (barely out of school) seemed to be in their element at least! I’m not sure they knew where to look

That says more about them the people wearing gym clothing.

What were you wearing op? Are you happy for people to stare at you and judge you?

Blueuggboots · 24/02/2025 20:02

THONG not thing?!
And I appreciate horrified is a strong reaction, but it's just grim.

netflixfan · 24/02/2025 20:02

I hate the bloody gym

JoyDreamer86 · 24/02/2025 20:03

Sometimes it does get a bit tiresome seeing it but as long as they dont then complain a guy is looking at them then we just have to let them carry on dressing like that. If they have their boobs and butt on display then complain of being oggled then that would make me angry. Of course people will have a look if they have it on display.

user1471538275 · 24/02/2025 20:03

@Blueuggboots It's not grim. You just don't like it.

You not liking it doesn't make it grim, unacceptable, inappropriate or anything else.

It's purely your opinion. Which is worth very little to anyone other than yourself.

LittleBigHead · 24/02/2025 20:04

YABU. If you're noticing what other gym members are wearing, you're not working hard enough.

I work extremely hard in my 3-4 gym sessoins per week. If I could wear less, I would, I get so hot & sweaty.

And I like tight fitting leggings & tops, so as little as possible moves or gets in the way when I'm doing my metcon workout, or lifting heavy weights.

So eff off, frankly, for judging other women. Just get on with your work out.

TomatoSandwiches · 24/02/2025 20:05

When I used to visit the gym I was too busy using the equipment and counting reps to stare or have much of an opinion about what anyone was wearing or not.

Surely it's best that people wear what they feel comfortable in whatever sex they are. I'm sure if someone was violating a dress code the staff would take care of it.

Perhaps you need to work out harder or get a home gym if you find such trivial things a distraction?

Siriusmuggle · 24/02/2025 20:05

I’m old and my gym wear varies between leggings, tight shorts, vests and sometimes I’m so hot I just wear sports bra and shorts. Nobody has ever looked twice.
I reserve my judgment for people in properly inappropriate gym wear- swim shorts, crocs, building site hi vis, shiny tracksuits etc

You don't sound as though you ever left Victorian times.

If women want to dress in a sexual way that's entirely their choice.

And if they complain that they're viewed purely in a sexual way, they'd be right to do so.

There's more to absolutely everyone than their style of dress, like their brains and personality for a start....

I came here to say this!

I used to go to (and will still get a guest pass if in the area) a nice gym in London. I never wore anything to get noticed but it definitely did loads for my self confidence when wearing a cute set! The locker rooms were so chatty as well with gymwear recommendations, and I've felt far more unsafe/stared at outside in baggy clothes than I ever do in a gym.

Yes we've moved away from women wearing things for fear of how a man may act/what men deem acceptable thank god. That means we can wear what we want - and some women look and feel good in tighter gymwear. Also agree with those who say if you don't like it don't look. Millions of things to look at in the gym, if you're choosing to focus on people wearing clothes you disapprove of, that's on you.

FondantFancyFan · 24/02/2025 20:06

Don't they get hot in all that skin tight clothing as it traps all the air close to the body? I know I'd be sweating buckets & feeling very hot.

Elseaknows · 24/02/2025 20:07

Yes everyone can wear what they want.
People can also say what they want.

People wearing tight and revealing clothing at the gym has always been ridiculous. If someone says something about it they whinge claiming it's sexist or some grave offense. Play silly games, win silly prizes.

I don't give a shit what you wear at a gym to be fair. It's great that you want to be healthy however if you choose to wear a sports bra and leggings/ skimpy vest and shorts then someone mentions it, either ignore it, embrace it or change it.

I find tight leggings hold me in and make me feel more comfortable when exercising. But I draw the line at crop tops! 🤣

Yes this is me. No-one should have to look at my 63 year old midriff.

I see all sorts at the gym I use; not screen the scrunch-bum leggings for a while - I assume they have had their day. But lots of Sweaty Betty and Fabletics across all ages. Don’t see a lot of bikinis or thongs but that may be the time of day I favour.

Its fine; activity appropriate and comfortable.

Of course I absolutely would because I'm not a fuckwit 😳

If that's what he's comfortable exercising in, let him get on with it.

I don't have to look, do I? And even if I did happen to look, so what?

How has anyone been harmed?

UninterestingFirstPost · 24/02/2025 20:07

Wouldn’t look out of place at the beach, which is a place for leisure and sport… much like the gym.
It’s not like people are wearing scrunch bum leggings to orgies otherwise

NoSoupForU · 24/02/2025 20:09

How bizarre. The gym is the very place to wear form fitting kit. I don't like to have a tshirt flapping against me when I'm lifting weights so I wear a cropped top or gym vest. I also wear tight leggings or shorts. I choose my kit for me and assume other people can just not look at me if they're offended by a stomach or legs.

I use the womens only space. So I presume that's alright as you (and other posters) seem to be implying that women only wear stuff like that for male attention.

Sorry but you seem to be saying women have every right to dress in a sexual way but they should complain if they are viewed in a sexual way?
That sounds like having your cake and eating it to me.
