To find the gym attire of some women completely inappropriate?

Apolo90 · 24/02/2025 19:39

I went to the gym with a work colleague after work; it’s the first time I’ve been to that particular one.

I was taken aback by the number of women wearing either the tightest leggings imaginable, barely there sports bra’s and/or shorts which wouldn’t look out of place on the beach they were that sparse.

Is this really appropriate? I’m far from a prude but I like to exercise without being forced to stare at someone’s bottom squeezed into impossibly tight clothing.

Maybe I’m just getting old.

For serious running it’s much more comfortable for most people to wear something skin tight.

Presumably some of the women you see in the changing room are naked - is that ok? If so I don’t really see why a woman in a sports bra should be such an issue.

Bunny44 · 24/02/2025 20:38

Most gym clothes are made that way?? I sometimes have worn loose clothing to do certain exercises and really regreted it as it got in the way. I hate to feel judged by women like you at the gym. I've gone back to the gym post-partum and had to squeeze into my old bras and tops with my 32G boobs - no fault of my own and already feel self conscious without feeling like people are judging me. Gym should be an environment where women should be supportive of each other. We're just there to keep fit and try and feel good about ourselves! What on earth do you think about those going for a swim?!

It makes me really annoyed that those women who chose to dress in highly sexualised revealing clothing criticise everyone who feels uncomfortable by their inappropriateness for judging them.

Of course we judge people by what they wear: that's a fact of life.

Actually I honestly think that a woman who needs to dress in an extremely revealing way has issues with her own self worth.

I'm totally unapologetic for my view point.

Edited

The criticism is only coming from one direction as far as I can see. I may well see a woman in an outfit that I personally wouldn’t choose to wear, or that’s a bit out there, but it would never make me ‘really annoyed’, because I don’t have any right to be annoyed by it and neither do you.

ehb102 · 24/02/2025 20:40

I've learned that baggy, covering up clothes hinder your workout. As a fat person I went through an awful lot of baggy jogging trousers until I gave in and switched to leggings. They are probably tight, too, because I wear compression leggings. Baggy long t-shirts get caught when rowing or leg pressing. When I'm working hard I get hot. I wish I dared wear just a sports bra on my top! So there are practical reasons for tight and short gym clothes. No need to criticise people for being female in a public place.

I’m older and thankful that there is such a range of comfortable gym gear in practical fabrics available now. I wear leggings to just below the knee, a strong sports bra to keep the bouncers strapped down and a close fitting sleeveless top. I remember the aerobics classes of the 80s/90s with everyone in leotards or unitards, with less efficient low Lycra content fabrics. So much better and 100% less sweaty now.

I’d be interested to know what the ‘ it’s inappropriate ‘ posters would consider to be acceptable clothing in the gym ?

Sack cloth and ashes by the sound of it!

Nah, the stuff that’s being worn in my gym is not professional sportswear style Lycra, it’s very definitely meant to be sexual……hot pant shorts with weird panelling bits to highlight your bum cheeks, scrunch bum shorts and leggings, crop tops that aren’t sports bras because they aren’t big enough to have any support in them! You don’t wear these unless you want to draw attention to your arse, and quite frankly it’s not just their arse you can often see through them! https://us.aybl.com/en-gb/products/adapt-seamless-shorts-iris-blue

Exactly there is a difference isnt there. One day I looked up and a young girl in front of me was on that machine where your face down and your bum is in the air lifting your legs behind you. She had tiny shorts on and they weren't even tight. They were like tiny frilly pyjama shorts. So when she bent over they went even higher and showed even more! Anyone with an adult brain would look at that and see the sexual element, not just men. How can a female not realise this? How is that decent at a gym? When did women start considering that decent in front of total strangers at the gym?

You seriously need to get out more and stop judging women, that’s what men are for.

DopeyS · 24/02/2025 20:48

Just wait until you go to a swimming pool and see what people wear in those. Or is that different? Still people exercising.
Is it just the women or were you not looking at and judging the men? I see plenty of videos of men in tiny shorts and muscle vets or the vest where you can see their nipples. Funnily enough they're never told it's inappropriate and they'll be tempting the women to stare.

Iwishyoudstay · 24/02/2025 20:48

NeverHadHaveHas · 24/02/2025 20:32

Tight gym wear isn’t sexual though - it’s form fitting because a lot of people prefer to exercise without loose clothes flapping around. In sports such as weightlifting it’s actually compulsory to wear skin tight clothing.

I wear leggings and a sports bra most days in the gym and never once have I chosen gym clothes with the thought that I wanted to look sexual.

It seems like the people who are offended by the perceived sexuality are preoccupied with sexuality themselves.

The people who are saying ‘I don’t like where to look’, I would put money on the fact that the people who are wearing leggings and a bra don’t give a shit what you think or where you look.

Well obviously they don't give a damn who they offend.
That's the whole point isn't it.

arcticpandas · 24/02/2025 20:49

Find another gym! Where I go everyone is comfortable; think leggings and big t-shirt, no showing off and friendly atmosphere. Majority 40-60 old so maybe that's it?

You haven’t explained why they should give a damn. If you’re so preoccupied with sexualisation that you can’t look at tight clothes without seeing sexuality, that sounds like a you problem.

"Maybe I’m just getting old"

Got it in one.

babymamalove · 24/02/2025 20:53

Are you jealous or something?

Aworldofmyown · 24/02/2025 20:54

The teeny tiny teeth flossing shorts and push up bra tops are a bit much at the gym but tbh people can wear what they want. Also it means the blokes are looking at them and not my fat arse. If they are OK with it then I am.
Now, I was at a spa last week with multiple women in thong swimwear, that's gross!! 😆

AMurderofMurderingCrows · 24/02/2025 20:55

Iwishyoudstay · 24/02/2025 19:55

Well I'm heartily fed up of seeing women and teenage girls wearing clothes that are barely decent.

It's the height of hypocrisy for women to complain that they are viewed purely in a sexual way when they they wear clothes that are designed to reveal as much of their bodies as possible.

I'm amazed anyone batted an eyelid at Bianca at the Grammys because that's the next logical step when you see how much a lot of women think it's appropriate to reveal on a day to day basis in real life.

And no, I don't want to go back to Victorian times.

If a woman wears revealing clothes, she is only revealing parts of a body. A body, that's it, we all have one.

So, when other people start sexualising her body, and she's not asked them to do so, she has every right to complain.

Are you one of those people who blame the rape victim because she was wearing a short skirt?

Go and learn about misogyny and, especially if you are a woman, internalized misogyny. Unlearn your old fashioned sexist ideas. Your views and ideas are prehistoric.

I also have no interest in your replies, especially your 'unapologetic' ones 🙄 unless you're telling me you have educated yourself and have changed your views.

Of course there is a difference between a pool (or beach or sauna) and a gym! That's like saying if it's ok to wear a bikini on a beach it's ok to wear a bikini to the shops. It's different, as evidenced by the fact some holiday resorts are starting to propose issuing fines to tourists who wear their beachwear into towns.

I actually find it quite creepy the amount of people on this thread who seem to look at women wearing tight clothes for sport and immediately think ‘sex’. It says more about the person thinking it than the wearer.

Itsoneofthose · 24/02/2025 20:57

People are trying to be tactful and open minded in the replies here but the truth be told you're actually voicing what everyone has thought before. Some of the trousers with pleated details on the crack are just obscene. There's no denying it.

I really find the faux naievity of women who dress in extremely revealing clothing absolutely ridiculous.
It's everybody else's problem for being uncomfortable, nothing at all to do with the inappropriateness of the clothing they are wearing.

Lavender14 · 24/02/2025 20:59

"Sorry but you seem to be saying women have every right to dress in a sexual way but they should complain if they are viewed in a sexual way?"

This is the same misogynistic crap that tells women they shouldn't breastfeed in public or wear bikinis at the beach. Or that if a woman is wearing certain clothing she is automatically consenting to sex aka rape. Gym clothing is not sexual clothing. It's gym wear being worn in a gym. Your perception of it is sexual because womens bodies are overly sexualised by men who don't take accountability for themselves and who feel entitled to sexual gratification.

It is 💯 your problem. Tight leggings/shorts/bra in a place for EXERCISE is not inappropriate you fruit loop.

I'm not sure breast feeding in public and scrunch bum leggings are the same

UninterestingFirstPost · 24/02/2025 21:02

For everyone who thinks they should decide what other people should wear, who gets to decide what you should wear?

And it's not "faux naievity" women are not stupid we know how the world works we just choose not to submit to it and instead ask men to do better. Accountability lies with men and I'd say its naieve to pretend that dressing any differently would stop men from viewing women as sexual. Years ago it was risqué to show ankles. If women cover up more all that does is shift the goal posts of what 'sexualised clothing' is. It's highly naieve to think that it's solving anything.

The group of young lads (barely out of school) seemed to be in their element at least! I’m not sure they knew where to look

Ah, yes. “Boys will be boys”. “If she’s wearing that she obviously wants the attention”. “Can you describe what you were wearing on the night you were attacked madam?”.

Its depressing that we haven’t moved past this yet.
