To find the gym attire of some women completely inappropriate?

Apolo90 · 24/02/2025 19:39

I went to the gym with a work colleague after work; it’s the first time I’ve been to that particular one.

I was taken aback by the number of women wearing either the tightest leggings imaginable, barely there sports bra’s and/or shorts which wouldn’t look out of place on the beach they were that sparse.

Is this really appropriate? I’m far from a prude but I like to exercise without being forced to stare at someone’s bottom squeezed into impossibly tight clothing.

Maybe I’m just getting old.

I did wonder the other day if we’re close to just women going naked at the gym

Sorry but you seem to be saying women have every right to dress in a sexual way but they should complain if they are viewed in a sexual way?
That sounds like having your cake and eating it to me.

Edited

No I don't 'seem' to be saying that, you just seem to be not reading my post properly, despite quoting it?

The word you missed was purely.

Leafy74 · 24/02/2025 21:20

They may very well kid themselves otherwise, but they wear it to make themselves attractive to men. Judging but what I see at my gym it must definitely be working.

I'm sure all.the men at my current gym.are very happy that so many attractive young women are dressing to please the male gaze. Oh and the tiny bikinis in the spa are even more revealing.

If you've got it, flaunt it!

DopeyS · 24/02/2025 21:21

JoyDreamer86 · 24/02/2025 20:56

Of course there is a difference between a pool (or beach or sauna) and a gym! That's like saying if it's ok to wear a bikini on a beach it's ok to wear a bikini to the shops. It's different, as evidenced by the fact some holiday resorts are starting to propose issuing fines to tourists who wear their beachwear into towns.

Both places you are going there to exercise and wearing clothing designed for that exercise. Gym wear is from fitting because it's more comfortable. I bought myself some gym leggings. They are super tight, because that's how they're designed so that when I do exercise in them they're not bunching up, sliding down or I'm constantly having to readjust.
I also have a sports bra and it's much more comfortable just wearing that with the leggings, they're cut with all the shapes, patterns and features that are flattering to make me feel better about myself while I work out. So I don't look in the mirror and think I look hideous. I wouldn't wear them out as I feel like I'd be judged, seeing all the comments on here I clearly should be as should be in an oversized t-shirt to hide my body and shame clearly.

Why the light colours, sweaty crotches are not attractive

ClaredeBear · 24/02/2025 21:21

You're obviously new gym goer generally as people dress like this in gyms all over. As a 52 year old with lots of younger women around me in the gym everyday, wearing the type of clothing you've described, I'd say you're not working hard enough. Focus on yourself and you'll see better results, mentally and physically.

Not comparable. Most breastfeeding women, in fact all I have ever seen, have done their best to be a discreet as possible. This is the opposite of wearing clothing engineered to enhance an emphasise one's butt cheeks, like some baboon in heat.

‘Baboon in heat’ 🤣🤣🤣 👍🏻

Are you really still missing the point? I breastfed I know it's discrete. It's not about the clothing or the feeding or what the woman is doing at all no matter what she's wearing or where she's wearing it. It's about men feeling entitled to womens bodies and misplaced responsibility being put on women in response to that instead of holding men accountable. And even worse to me is when some women are happy to do the policing so men don't need to do better. And things just moving backwards on a sliding scale that gets us all into dangerous territory and sends the message to people who have more extreme views that they have a point.

Duckyfondant · 24/02/2025 21:22

I agree with you. Everyone should have a proper top on at the gym to absorb their sweat. No one needs a close up view of someone else's bum crack there either.

My gym doesn't have screens to watch so it is annoying trying to avoid seeing more of someone than is generally considered polite, when they are right in your natural eyeline.

wherearemypastnames · 24/02/2025 21:23

Gym wear is close fitting because it's more comfortable

Is that really true ?

Why do men not seem to feel the same ?

Gym wear is close fitting because you don't have much choice would be my take

Nonrienderien · 24/02/2025 21:23

My preferred exercise is swimming & its enough having to deal with witnessing bare around the pool. I'd never heard of 'scrunch bum leggings' I've just googled them to see what the fuss is about. They are at best undignified & although not quite as humiliating as thong bikinis they make a good attempt🤦‍♀️

Shodan · 24/02/2025 21:23

50Balesofgrey · 24/02/2025 21:14

Surely gym knickers with your aertex blouse

Our PE skirts were actually 100% wool skorts. We had to wear them over our gym knickers. There was chafing in the winter on the hockey pitch 😯

Anyway. I was at the gym in very tight leggings today. They're very tight because I've put on a smidgen of extra weight since I bought them and I flatly refuse to buy more. I will exercise (and diet) until they fit better.

The other gym-goers wore...erm... clothes? I can't say I noticed particularly.

What I did notice was how friendly and welcoming it felt there. No-one seemed to be staring or judging. Very reassuring for a new gym-goer.

No-one's forcing you to stare at anyone's arse.

Don't be so rude and weird.

If they're happy and comfortable that's all that matters, not your delicate eyes.

Where did OP say she was 'staring?' You may not be aware but there is a difference between being aware of your surroundings and staring..

AMurderofMurderingCrows · 24/02/2025 21:24

JoyDreamer86 · 24/02/2025 21:06

Are you honestly saying that if you walked down the street showing off your boobs or butt for example and you noticed men gawping at you, that you would be offended at them looking? Because they may potentially be appreciating your body in a sexual way.

And no one is saying that if a woman wears provocative clothing it's ok for men to attack her. No one is saying that!

No-one is talking about me walking down the road with my breasts or bum out. The conversation is about women's gym wear.

Because they may potentially be appreciating your body in a sexual way.

Women are not on this earth for men to appreciate their bodies in a sexual way. It's time for change and men must learn to act like decent human beings and not leer at women when they have not been invited to do so.

And no one is saying that if a woman wears provocative clothing it's ok for men to attack her.

You are correct, I did not say that. I asked the other poster if she blamed the victim if she was raped because she was wearing a short skirt.

The group of young lads (barely out of school) seemed to be in their element at least! I’m not sure they knew where to look

And that's THEIR issue - not the wearer’s. Come on! We all know this shit. It’s the gym - they’re wearing gym kit. If the lads are staring, they need to focus on their workout instead and get some better manners.
Next it’ll be “they’re asking for it” rhetoric.

Exactly. I've never seen a man in scrunch bum leggings and a crop top.

Asking to be gawped at, yes

Comedycook · 24/02/2025 21:26

In theory I agree women can wear what they want. And yes, gym clothing is often tight and shows some flesh...meh.

But there are a new style leggings and shorts that I've seen recently that go right up the backside and basically make women look naked. Honestly, I'm not a prude...I don't care if women wear leggings and shorts...I do too...but these new style ones really do look quite indecent.

Good luck setting up the “ministry of what people should wear to the gym”. Who will staff it? You?

There's no need to be so nasty. Just because you disagree with something somebody says, doesn't mean you need to make childish comments like this. It's called a discussion forum so OP is entitled to start a discussion on it.

Hwi · 24/02/2025 21:28

You are not! It is disgusting. Puts me off going to the gym, tbh. I'd rather jog/cycle - but lycra men set me off too - you can practically see their religion by their tight-clad parts. Absolutely disgusting, not British at all, weird in the extreme, but here we are.

SpidersAreShitheads · 24/02/2025 21:28

I think actually, multiple things can be true at once.

*Tight, skimpy clothing is on the whole much more practical for exercising. It's entirely appropriate for the gym.

*Women should be able to wear whatever the fuck they want, as should men, providing no one is breaching common decency or hygiene standards eg/exercising with no pants on.

*Not all tight, skimpy wear is actually proper exercise gear - some of it is fashion wear masquerading as gym wear. These types of clothing don't provide proper support, don't wick away sweat, and are deliberately sexual eg/very low cut on the chest so cleavage pops out when bending over.

*The gym isn't always a place to exercise. Some people just go to ponce around in tight clothing and show off as much of their body as possible while trying to get asked out.

Because I'm old as fuck, I've been going to the gym for more than 30 years. People have always worn tight clothing, in varying degrees. Anyone else remember the Let's Get Physical music video? Or Call On Me? 😂

I don't care what people wear but I do feel irritated by people strutting around, taking up space preening, with clearly no interest in exercising. I would say there's been a real change and there are now a much more significant number of people in this category whereas in the past people went to the gym to genuinely exercise, and that's it.

This applies to men as much as women, possibly even more of them tbh because of the skimpy gym clothing that is the current trend. That's not the fault of the women who are there to genuinely exercise.

Well I’d advise you not to go to the gym in Angel, plenty of men in tight shorts, leggings, tight tops, crop tops and sometimes no tops!
