To find the gym attire of some women completely inappropriate?

I went to the gym with a work colleague after work; it’s the first time I’ve been to that particular one.

I was taken aback by the number of women wearing either the tightest leggings imaginable, barely there sports bra’s and/or shorts which wouldn’t look out of place on the beach they were that sparse.

Is this really appropriate? I’m far from a prude but I like to exercise without being forced to stare at someone’s bottom squeezed into impossibly tight clothing.

Maybe I’m just getting old.

people can wear what they want…

MasterBeth · 24/02/2025 19:41

What are they supposed to wear, an Aertex blouse and their PE skirt?

LadyTable · 24/02/2025 19:41

No-one's forcing you to stare at anyone's arse.

Don't be so rude and weird.

If they're happy and comfortable that's all that matters, not your delicate eyes.

Overtheatlantic · 24/02/2025 19:42

I agree but that’s just the way some women like to dress. I don’t like to see men in tight or barely there clothing either.

Perfect response!

ToBeOrNotToBee · 24/02/2025 19:43

You're not wrong.
It's incredibly distasteful.
Some will say its for the wearers comfort, there's nothing comfortable about having your tits hanging out or lifting with a permanent wedgie.

festivemouse · 24/02/2025 19:43

Honestly the gym is probably the place it's more appropriate to wear form fitting / revealing attire, especially when working out and training different muscle groups!

I go by the opinion that whilst I'm going in a tshirt and leggings, some might want to go in gym shorts and a gym bra. We're both dressed appropriately! Whether or not you "like" a style of clothing doesn't have any relation to it being appropriate.

Edited

So don't look at men in barely there or tight clothing? You have a choice here

coxesorangepippin · 24/02/2025 19:43

Ah yeah scrunch bum leggings

Bit much, IMHO

Fmlright · 24/02/2025 19:43

I’m a bit of a prude and I agree. I don’t like seeing men shirtless in public either. I am 30 years old and have always been a bit prudish compared to most people.

winewolfhowls · 24/02/2025 19:44

Actually I think you have a point but more in a hygiene way. Tiny shorts means more sweaty thighs on equipment, and it's definitely a minority that wipe down after use.

SerafinasGoose · 24/02/2025 19:44

Not this again.

Is this Mumsnet or the new-look Mary Whitehouse experience?

Anotherparkingthread · 24/02/2025 19:45

Ew op staring at strangers arses is gross lol, is report you if I was in the gym 😂

Leggings are supposed to be skin tight, it's so they aren't flapping around catching on the wearer or peices of equipment.

I have a pale pink pair and if I wear them in the street people often have second looks, I assume on the first glance they think I'm starkers from the waist down!

Apolo90 · 24/02/2025 19:45

The group of young lads (barely out of school) seemed to be in their element at least! I’m not sure they knew where to look

Exactly. I remember having to run in PE knickers. And just a regular bra under a see-through Aertex blouse. Now THAT was inappropriate - for an unwilling teenage girl. People should wear what they want to exercise. Don't like it, don't look.

Icanttakethisanymore · 24/02/2025 19:46

Good luck setting up the “ministry of what people should wear to the gym”. Who will staff it? You?

ThirdStorm · 24/02/2025 19:46

I find tight leggings hold me in and make me feel more comfortable when exercising. But I draw the line at crop tops! 🤣

But that's on the boys being inappropriate. It's not for females to change how they dress because a male doesn't have any .... respect/manners/boundaries/morals . Insert your own word as appropriate.

xsquared · 24/02/2025 19:50

I went to the gym myself today, and I can't even remember what others wore.

Why are you staring at other women when you are meant to be exercising yourself?

Not sure what exercise you do but my thighs don't sweat.... My armpits or between my boobs maybe or even around my crotch. All covered in fabric.

user1471538275 · 24/02/2025 19:51

It's definitely you.

Other people are able to accept that people choose to wear different things.

At a gym, people often wear tight clothing so that they can move freely

If you really can't cope with other people choosing differently to you perhaps you should exercise at home.

Overtheatlantic · 24/02/2025 19:51

I’m not going to spend my life looking at the floor just because others can’t figure out how to dress appropriately for the occasion/environment.

ilovesooty · 24/02/2025 19:51

You could try minding your own business and concentrating on your workout rather than staring at people's clothes and other people's reactions.

user1471538275 · 24/02/2025 19:52

@Overtheatlantic

The gym environment is exactly the right place for tight fitting clothing.

Loose clothing can be quite dangerous in machines.

healthybychristmas · 24/02/2025 19:54

I would love to know how you're meant to avoid noticing people like this. For those of you saying you shouldn't be looking at them, where is the person meant to look? And why does the person wearing inappropriate clothing have the right to look everywhere but the other people don't?
