To find the gym attire of some women completely inappropriate?

I went to the gym with a work colleague after work; it’s the first time I’ve been to that particular one.

I was taken aback by the number of women wearing either the tightest leggings imaginable, barely there sports bra’s and/or shorts which wouldn’t look out of place on the beach they were that sparse.

Is this really appropriate? I’m far from a prude but I like to exercise without being forced to stare at someone’s bottom squeezed into impossibly tight clothing.

Maybe I’m just getting old.

Don't they get hot in all that skin tight clothing as it traps all the air close to the body? I know I'd be sweating buckets & feeling very hot.

You'll sweat in baggy clothes also but many find those clothes start to stick to your body in places it feels odd. I'm sure people are wearing what makes them most comfortable to exercise in.

I would love to know how you're meant to avoid noticing people like this. For those of you saying you shouldn't be looking at them, where is the person meant to look? And why does the person wearing inappropriate clothing have the right to look everywhere but the other people don't?

Okay, so this is what and where I was looking at when I was doing my exercises today at the gym:

Warm up on the mat lying down - looking at the ceiling
Planks - looking at the mat
Cable exercises - holding on to the equipment and facing the wall
Lat pull machine - facing reception area
Overhead press machine - unused cross trainer in front of me
Kettlebell exercises - three others in my line of sight, nothing unusual about the way they dressed
Dumbbell exercises - two others also doing dumbbell exercises, again nothing unusual about the way they dressed
Leg press machine - I am looking at my foot placement on the weighted plate

It looks like it is possible to do exercises without being "forced to stare" at others whether they are wearing something inappropriate or not.

What about swimming then? Can't get any more revealing than a bikini or speedos
It doesn't bother me but I do hate the bum crack leggings look, especially when doing a class that involves squats

ClassicalQueen · 24/02/2025 20:10

You don't have to look. People can wear what they are comfortable in.

Well I'm heartily fed up of seeing women and teenage girls wearing clothes that are barely decent.

It's the height of hypocrisy for women to complain that they are viewed purely in a sexual way when they they wear clothes that are designed to reveal as much of their bodies as possible.

I'm amazed anyone batted an eyelid at Bianca at the Grammys because that's the next logical step when you see how much a lot of women think it's appropriate to reveal on a day to day basis in real life.

And no, I don't want to go back to Victorian times.

It’s not the ‘height of hypocrisy’ for women to choose what they wear and to expect men to be able to control themselves. This is such a disappointing attitude to take towards women, and if it isn’t Victorian then I don’t know what is.

tillyandmilly · 24/02/2025 20:11

I hate those leggings that go up the bum they look disgusting! Should be banned -

You don't have to look. People can wear what they are comfortable in.

People said the same about the teacher who wore enormous prosthetic breasts to teach his class.

TomatoSandwiches · 24/02/2025 20:12

I think this is so sad, women already have to deal with men thinking they have a right to have a say over what women wear, lots of cultures already DO control what women wear and now we have OTHER women thinking they have a say also?

Just fuck off and leave women alone, aren't you tired of this shit yet?

ThejoyofNC · 24/02/2025 20:12

People on here are mental when it comes to stuff like this. I honestly don't think it's either acceptable or necessary to work out in your underwear personally.

TheLongRider · 24/02/2025 20:13

OP - be careful if you hoik your judgy pants and clutch your pearls any harder you'll be in danger of auto asphyxiation.

TunnocksOrDeath · 24/02/2025 20:13

Lycra is the most sensible kit for a lot of exercise, it prevents chafing, wicks the sweat, keeps you cool and adds a moderate level of support. Baggy kit can get caught in equipment and rip, upset your balance, or depending on the exercise, ride up and expose rather more naked flesh than the wearer might wish.
DH and I met rowing, everyone there (men and women) wears lycra, usually a one-piece because it's just the most practical thing. In the Summer when it gets too hot in the gym and they roll the top half down and crack-on. No one ogles, everyone's concentrating on their own workout.
The correct etiquette is to wipe-down the machine and the mat underneath after you've used it.
You are a prude.

In what way did that benefit the way the class was taught?

LadyWiddiothethird · 24/02/2025 20:14

We have a new spa retreat at the gym I attend. Some of the females wear the most hideous revealing swimwear.I joined18 years ago when wearing conventional swimsuits was the rule, they look so much better than a strip of material up the bum crack and bosoms oozing out.

No wonder a couple were banned last week for having sex in the jacuzzi.

LillyPJ · 24/02/2025 20:15

Why can't they wear what they like and feel comfortable in for exercising. You don't have to stare at them - just look away. Their clothing isn't inappropriate; it's just things you don't think are right.

There's a big difference between the classroom and the gym.

The problem is it’s hard to avoid seeing the arses sometimes. Would you be as supportive of a 23 stone man in tight Lycra shorts and t shirt?

And what's wrong with that? At least he'd be trying to get fit.

outerspacepotato · 24/02/2025 20:19

People at the gym are there to work out. Experienced gymgoers usually don't wear loose clothing that can get caught on or in equipment. Loose clothing is what's inappropriate in that environment. Stop staring and judging, that's rude.

TomatoSandwiches · 24/02/2025 20:14

I don't understand what your question is, can you please clarify

MasterBeth · 24/02/2025 20:20

Has no-one ever watched the Olympics?

Skin-tight Lycra worn by elite sportswomen.

It's not sexual, it's professional activewear.

Blueuggboots · 24/02/2025 20:20

@user1471538275 - in MY opinion, it's grim and I'm entirely allowed to think that. Have I told her to dress appropriately? No, I haven't, but u shall continue to think it's grim and I don't give a shiny shit what you think about it!!! 🤣

What differences do you have in mind

What are they supposed to wear, an Aertex blouse and their PE skirt?

Obviously. Plus gym knickers

henlake7 · 24/02/2025 20:22

Its not offensive IMO, although I do find it abit weird if someone if fully kitted out in skimpy gym gear and spends all their time on their phone rather then exercising.

I prefer to exercise at home but it's usually in gym shorts and just a sports bra coz I get hot....it's what happens so why wouldn't you dress for it?

Sinkintotheswamp · 24/02/2025 20:22

Gym goers wearing flesh toned scrunch bum leggings are pretty entertaining. They amuse me and take my mind off my workout for a bit.
I can workout and judge outfits at the same time.

People said the same about the teacher who wore enormous prosthetic breasts to teach his class.

Totally & completely different. He was displaying a fetish in public, and forcing young teens & children to participate in the public display of his sexual fetish.
