Scared of what labour will do

Wantachangefor2024 · 22/02/2025 01:58

Is anyone else terrified of what labour will enforce. The tax on farmers. Will they means test pip? Will they tax state pension more? What else will they do and where will it all end. They ruthlessly without no care took away the winter fuel allowance. Means testing and taxing state pension would massively impact my family

What I can’t afford is to pay for 60 percent of the population.

How are you?

Good luck with your new life. The US is looking great at the moment.

I for one am counting my blessings that we live in a country that cares about society as a wiole
and not just the priviledged.

MoodySky · 22/02/2025 08:09

But why shouldn't farmers pay inheritance tax? Everyone else has to. And it only affects farms worth over a large amount so most farmers won't pay it.

It's been introduced to stop the rich buying up land (and not farming it) as a tax dodge.

MammaTo · 22/02/2025 08:09

Nope I’m not worried.

CornishIrish · 22/02/2025 08:10

Farming is a business. Businesses are subject to taxes. You can mitigate against taxes and plan for them.

Pensions are income so if you have a state pension plus other sources of income then you are taxed above the threshold only. My MIL had two private pensions and the income of flat on top of a state pension and her tax bill was next to nothing. She has a nice home, a gym membership and more than one holiday a year.

That’s a damn sight more than young working people. So I don’t feel sad that she lost the fuel allowance. Fuel providers were able to keep prices high and big payouts to shareholders, this was propped up by taxpayers money.

Raising the pension and supporting genuine need is fair.

ploppydoppy · 22/02/2025 08:11

@indigovapour I agree with you that they didn't want to break their election promise so didn't have much headroom. But I thought they were hoping NI increases would raise more. I don't agree an increase in income tax would have resulted in more growth though. Real growth has been elusive for some time.

Addeline · 22/02/2025 08:11

I don’t think they have even hit near the carnage the Tories created. Standards of living have dropped massively for average families in the last 14 years. Dentistry is unaffordable and inaccessible. Waiting lists st hospitals were running in years. Two full time salaries no longer covers basic household bills for many. Food banks didn’t use to exist. One in three dc live in poverty. It’s a disgrace.

Good for you. May be have a reality check to see if it is sustainable? The US much better than here but the world is rounded and not so far from here you you can get a very good quality of life.
Just hold onto your little council flat, NHS or top up credits while you can.

Well this is what everyone voted for! Everyone cheered when my family was affected by the 20% VAT. How I’ve laughed now all the PIP and pension people are quaking in their boots! It’s not nice is it?!

No one cheered at the private schools losing charitable status but let’s be clear, they are not charities.

I have a privately educated child with SEN needs. I feel privileged to be able to afford the fees but I also hope this government will offer a proper state alternative so it isn’t needed.

What a horrible attitude. You are adding to the stereotype of private school people being elitist and living a bubble.

You are getting sucked into right wing social media. You will be thinking it's ok to nazi salute next!

I was more scared by what the Conservatives were doing to our public services, nhs, schools and libraries. My main fear with Labour is whether they can reverse the rot honestly, or if it's too late.

This exactly.
While I think WFA should have a higher threshold. The penision generation have 25 percent with homes worth over a million. They will have more opportunities than the youth ever will. Unless they are lucky enough to inherit.
Farmers should pay the same IHT as everyone else and they have 10 years.

Porkyporkchop · 22/02/2025 08:16

I think it’s worrying times and the whole world is facing economic struggles. I am worried, our economy is weak and our route out which was economic growth has been hampered sadly by the rises in national insurance. If business have cut staff, not recruited more, and passed the hikes to consumers through higher prices, people will stop buying and you start getting in a cycle. It doesn’t look good

Mummyoflabradors · 22/02/2025 08:16

@Neurodiversitydoctor Pensioners do not have a higher personal allowance.

coffeeabdteav · 22/02/2025 08:18

Also it was the tories that created the green paper for vouchers for pip.

At the moment personally I am better off under labour than the torys who decimated public services. This may change, time will tell.

So how come so many Americans are wanting to leave their country? A country where the president wants to take away all benefits.

Home owner, higher tax payer NHS loving voter here. A Labour government is the best chance the NHS has of surviving.

And re the US I think it’s a great country however I don’t think lying awake worrying about health bankrupcy, your child being shot at school and billionaire dictators being able to dismantle your constitution, security and society at the flick of a pen is a great quality of life.

We have American family and trust me life does not feel great for the vast majority of Americans at the moment.

Usual bot accusation

dottiehens · 22/02/2025 07:55

So still can’t link this with Russian propaganda.
I am glad you are doing well even when families like us have been bled to the point of leaving next year.

Wrong poster, i never made any link to Russian propaganda at all.... people are able to be anti Labour without being a Russian troll.

PS didn't need to pass on the VAT charges, they could have increased class sizes...many passed on 20% despite now being allowed to claim back VAT.... so they ve made money from this measure....

These schools have also been increasing fees why beyond the rate of inflation for at least 20 years.

The effects on inflation of this measure is tiny... far greater are energy costs but inflation of 3% is nothing like the 11% Truss and the Tories gave us...

After all, if you blame the increases in inflation now on Labour, then its fair to blame the Tories for increases under their watch.

I hope you enjoy the USA or wherever you re going.

EasternStandard · 22/02/2025 08:28

Here for the Tory/Russian bot bingo. Didn't take long for a full house.

Yep on every thread

Yes, It is obvious you are all of those things.
Happy to pay taxes but it has now become like financial abuse in this country. I rather live in a society where you can prosper and create wealth and not working to mainly pay for the benefits of others. Whether is Labour or Tories both have contributed to this mess. I do not see any future here.
