Scared of what labour will do

Wantachangefor2024 · 22/02/2025 01:58

Is anyone else terrified of what labour will enforce. The tax on farmers. Will they means test pip? Will they tax state pension more? What else will they do and where will it all end. They ruthlessly without no care took away the winter fuel allowance. Means testing and taxing state pension would massively impact my family

No answers? Usually so vocal.

Well, at face value, yes it would, over many posts, you've not supported any Labour policy... apologies in advance if you have but i've not seen them.

The winter fuel allowance was not 'ruthlessly taken' Those who are on low incomes will still get it. It's ridiculous paying it to all OAPS- they're the richest group in the UK.

I do support
Spending on defence
keeping the 2 child benefit cap
labour against jihad

I don’t support
lying on cvs or anything else
reduction of women’s rights (although they’ve sensibly decided not to allow easy self id), and misogyny
taxing education and lying about the supposed results
cancelling wfa (hundreds of thousands that need it won’t get it)
Back pedalling on disabled rights. Who knows where that’s going.
damaging farmers
paying train drivers millions more. They’ve got some of the best pay and benefits in the uk. Trade union sycophancy. Needs must for labour I suppose. Wasn’t enough for EM was it.
ridiculous modifications to Ofsted
dumping schools in the free breakfast for all fiasco

There’s undoubtedly more in both sections. But here we are.

im sure I’ll get all barrels now. Though it’s time for lunch then I’ve meetings all afternoon. Apologies for no caps etc.

Fair enough but a lot of that was known about pre GE, so either you still voted for them or didn't vote....

As Labour also said they wouldn't raise vat income tax or NI, it was obvious they'd go for less well known taxes.

Personally, if i had those worries about Labour, i wouldn't vote for them, other centre left parties exist.

Barbadossunset · 27/02/2025 16:00

Do you not think this slavish support argument is wearing a bit thin? I’ve seen the poster you accuse of this criticise plenty - unlike you she disagrees with the WFA cut for a start.

That may be so that Labour voters find fault with some Labour policies, but nonetheless on the Starmer thread, any ‘outsider’ who criticises the PM or the Labour Party get rounded on by the regulars who join forces to point out the idiocy of whatever criticism has been made.

That isn’t true. It’s not what you say it’s the way that you say it. Polite, fact based posts are always welcome on that thread. Condescension and rudeness not so much.

That is a bit rich. Habitués of those threads are forceful on them and elsewhere, rude even at times.

I still like reading the threads though, at least now and again. There’s something fascinating about them.

Papyrophile · 27/02/2025 20:17

I thought it was interesting today to read a Telegraph columnist (Toby Harris) suggesting that the current Labout Government is actually behaving more like a Tory front bench with a Conservative agenda. Which goes along with comments from B1ossomtoes and Alexandra 2001 being a bit disappointed at their lack of zeal. It has taken me time but I am actually fairly laidback about politics now. I do think we need a a brake on escalating pensioner benefits with inflation. I think withdrawal of WFA should have been tied to the income tax threshold, rather than the niggardly pension credit start point.

I fully support the move to tax agricultural land acquisition for the IHT benefits. And while I don't like the proposal to include pension savings within an estate for IHT, because of family disadvantage (AND A FUCKTON OF PAPERWORK), I'd have to concede that on balance, it's probably the right thing to do now.

Not keen on the plan to re-write copyright law to gift AI automatic access to creative sources, but that's going to take years to draft.

Before someone crashes on to tell me that these are not their everyday concerns, I'd like to state for the record that I know and understand that I have been fortunate to grow up reasonably intelligent and middle class in the time that I did.

Papyrophile · 27/02/2025 20:45

I'd add to the above, that I don't think they have much choice BUT to follow this course right now, whatever their political preferences might be. If they play this well, I have my fingers crossed that we shall look back on them as a better than average government. And I think Keir Starmer will/would be pretty happy with that.

Labour hold all the high cards now, possibly quite briefly once the bye elections start, and have a huge majority. I hope they will seize the moment to do the sensible stuff, fairly. Ambitious housing plans, and train bricklayers and construction trades to do the work. Get everyone off Insta glam.

Just caught the end of the Trump/Starmer conference.. seems at first to have gone well, have to see what happens over the next few days.

Very glad Starmer is there representing us and not Badenoch, she'd have been a walkover for Trump.

Papyrophile · 27/02/2025 20:52

I haven't seen or heard it yet, but will listen later. I feel it is really important to forge connections.

Papyrophile · 28/02/2025 08:27

Wow!! I am quite stunned that it appears to have gone as well as that. Today programme is very positive on the summit.

As are most of the usual Tory supporting papers and editorials.... early days though but Royal visit was played well.

Absolutely this! So glad he put Vance in his place too re his ridiculous accusations over free speech and the Online Safety Act.

4C0rners · 28/02/2025 08:40

And finally somebody sorts out the shit show that the Tories created as regards GP surgeries. It’s a disgrace that it has been left for so long.

Tiredalwaystired · 28/02/2025 09:03

Yes I’ve been very impressed with the way things are being handled right now.

in an ideal world I would like the left to be a bit more left but line the above poster I think we’re not in the financial position to do that. If we need to be Tory light for a couple of years to get us to a state where we could be more left leaning I would be very happy but I’m having to be pragmatic right now because financially we’re in the shit and there are so many other problems right now too.

PandoraSox · 28/02/2025 09:10

Some posters have gone a bit quiet.

@Tiredalwaystired that is a very pragmatic take and a good one.

EasternStandard · 28/02/2025 09:18

I always laugh when posters don't feel the attention is on the thread they're on.

They're probably engaging on other threads with other posters.

There's an insightful King's letter thread for example

It is. It pretty much sums up my feeling, despite the disappointment. Now isn’t the right time for the kind of government I’d really like.

It is hard to accept that, but I think it might be true. However, if policy doesn't shift when times get better it will be inexcusable.
