Scared of what labour will do

Is anyone else terrified of what labour will enforce. The tax on farmers. Will they means test pip? Will they tax state pension more? What else will they do and where will it all end. They ruthlessly without no care took away the winter fuel allowance. Means testing and taxing state pension would massively impact my family

I clicked on this fully expecting it to be a post about being scared of childbirth. I do wish people would use caps when it's correct to do so!

Me too!

Farmers pay income tax on their profit. Many farmers don’t make a profit some years, most don’t make a huge profit, due to the ever-rising costs associated with farming. Many don’t own the land their farms are on.
PIP isn’t and never will be means-tested.
State pension already isn’t taxed, so they can’t “tax it more”.

But if state pension takes you over the personal allowanceyou will be taxed.

I take it you have something against pensioners ? Pensioners have same tax code as those that work and pay tax on earnings over the threshold same as a basic taxpayer as far as i can see , can you post a link that says otherwise. Asset like a house that has earned money over the years will be taxable eventually, but why should someone pay tax on a property, just because ethe value has gone up, they may not have the cash to actually do this. The very rich pensioner or not will always have the best advice to pay the least amount of tax, but many will pay much more in than someone like me on middle income wage.
i had some hope for this goverment but so far I am not impressed . Not means testing the winter fuel was shocking, I work with people in real hardship who cannot afford to heat & eat, many pensioners are not well off, private pensions were not the norm.
yes there is a shortfall in the pot but we still give money away and spend on pointless things. Plus they knew the situation so should of been honest about what they would do when in power, but then none of them are. All awful , as bad as each other. The cost of living is worrying, my ctax, rent , water etc have all gone up, more than my wages.
my young dc have got no hope of moving out of home until late 20’s , I'm encouraging them to consider abroad once qualified as for first time in my life I don’t think the uk has much to offer

Be careful what you wish for - my DC has been overseas for three years and I have zero wish to visit with Agent Orange/Musk in charge.

Christ. This is a pretty mean-spirited post.

If your child was/is going to private school, you're clearly in a higher income bracket.

People on PIP and pensions are often already on the poverty line. The reason they're "quaking" is that the changes won't mean they can't afford a luxury item - they won't be able to afford to live. They need the extra income to afford higher heating bills, clothing that's easy to put on, food that's already prepped, taxis because they can't leave the house and walk.

Laughing at genuine hardship is a shitty thing to do.

Because you've been affected, you're happy that people who are on the bones of their arse are also going to be hit? A little compassion wouldn't go amiss.

FWIW, I was opposed to the VAT on private schools, even though it's not something I"d ever be able to afford. I spoke out about it on here numerous times. Not everyone on PIP/UC/pensions disagrees with private education.

It was the gloating about vat which was hard to take…..and mean spirited.

To be clear-saying that you think putting VAT on school fees is a good idea and supporting the policy is not "gloating".

Most farms will be free of inheritance tax upto 3 million if owned by a couple. Almost all farms have a huge overdraft and numerous bits of machinery on finance which will bring the overall total down quite a bit. Finally it’s only 20% tax over 3 million if a couple own the farm so it can be planned for and I suspect banks will start providing loans for it.

They will increase taxes and piss away billions in public money, same as every other government. I have to admit to having less faith in this lot than usual because none of them seem actually qualified or experienced enough for the job. There is Rachel, who’s qualifications and experience don’t seem to add up, Angela who as Minister for housing doesn’t seem to actually know anything about housing and Jonathan Reynolds who as Secretary of State for Business and Trade has never actually run a business. Nor is he a solicitor, like he claimed?
In the real world such inexperienced people would not be put in those positions but its politics so 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️ They are all as bad as each other.

Wantachangefor2024 · 22/02/2025 02:39

Rachel Reeves will claim she got an A* in Maths, in reality most likely a D. She’ll be claiming she was an astronaut for nasa next

Why are you so disparaging towards the UKs first female Chancellor? Were you so scathing towards Hunt or Sunak and their prior failed businesses and waste/fraud of billions in Covid support loans?

Reeves didn't slash National Insurance by 4% costing the country £10billion per year.... thats on Hunt.... Reeves has to plug that £10billion... £10billion would take Defence spending to 2.5% and provide NHS dentistry for all...

On IHT and farms, how did they manage pre 1992? before then, they paid IHT in full and within 6 months!!! Not 20% and 10 years to pay.....

Farmers can also spend the next year or so, taking advice on how to mitigate IHT, instead of blocking roads and delaying emergency vehicles in London and other major cities.

Kendodd · 22/02/2025 07:40

Yes I am worried.
But the country is fucked (not Labour's fault).I hope they look at inheritance tax or wealth tax rather that further reduce the money working people have to stretch thinly already.

Catlover1705 · 22/02/2025 07:41

It's their lack of empathy which is scary. Say what you like about the Tories, but at least they didn't radiate gloom.

And Steve Reed, minister with responsibility for DEFRA, who is MP for Streatham, that well known farming heartland, and knows precisely nothing about rural affairs.

ManchesterLu · 22/02/2025 07:49

Creepybookworm · 22/02/2025 02:19

Do you have a farm that will.be liable for inheritance tax?

Even if she doesn't, do you understand that this will affect ALL of us, if farmers can no longer afford to farm?

indigovapour · 22/02/2025 07:50

I'm mainly scared of what Labour are doing and will do because absolutely none of it makes anyone's lives any better and this, I fear, means Reform genuinely might win the next election.

What's needed is a government and particularly a chancellor who can set out a clear plan and then start to get traction very quickly. Unfortunately we have someone who seems to believe a plan simply constitutes really, really wanting growth to happen and that she can manifest this by saying "growth" a lot, all while enacting policies which are anti-growth.

The cash ISA proposal is a real barometer for me. If she cuts the allowance then there can be no doubt that she's totally clueless and needs to go.

They messed up on WFA but on other changes, they've done ok, new legislation on child abuse for example, more emergency dental appointments, extra NHS appointments, i ve personally benefited from these.

We aren't in the famous Tory predicted recession either, consumer spend is up too.

They are planning to cut out of work benefits, not in the weekly amounts but in encouraging people to work and why not? being on benefits shouldn't be a choice.

Their biggest challenge is x channel migration but its still lower than the highest numbers seen under the Tories.

Loads to do but the only doom n gloom seems to be from Tory supporters.

dottiehens · 22/02/2025 07:51

They also brought private schools VAT two terms forward than they promised just to raise inflation and put a number of children and their families in distress by forcing some to leave school mid year.

IWantToGetOffHelp · 22/02/2025 02:33

Well this is what everyone voted for! Everyone cheered when my family was affected by the 20% VAT. How I’ve laughed now all the PIP and pension people are quaking in their boots! It’s not nice is it?!

They more than likely can barely afford their bills and heating being disabled or heating. I am sure you can manage a little extra tax like most private paying parents. Disabled and pensioners are some of the most vulnerable in our society.
