Scared of what labour will do

Wantachangefor2024 · 22/02/2025 01:58

Is anyone else terrified of what labour will enforce. The tax on farmers. Will they means test pip? Will they tax state pension more? What else will they do and where will it all end. They ruthlessly without no care took away the winter fuel allowance. Means testing and taxing state pension would massively impact my family

How do you know that opponents of Labour don’t support the government where it’s right to do so?

By way of example, I support the increase in defence spending (at face value: if it turns out to be creative accounting I’ll be critical), cuts to combat welfare dependency, WFA cut, the house building programme, prison reform, support for Israel.

Unlike you I don’t have to be a slavish supporter of this government.

My point is that in times of national crisis and Trumps election has certainly caused that... dragging up events from 4/5 years ago, of a fairly inconsequential nature, is petty.

What is it meant to constructively achieve? do you think Starmer is going to step down over this?

Labour have left some fairly large open goals for you and others to criticise them on.... instead we get this nonsense.

He used it from May to early July 2024 and declared it in September. The rules say declarations must be made in the relevant year. According to the Mail.

Thank you. It seems it was the use of the penthouse for political purposes that went undeclared. So I’m happy to accept that he did declare the use generally.

But the revision story is obvious rubbish: he used the penthouse for weeks after the end of the exams.

It wasn’t declared at an over-rate either.

Do you not think this slavish support argument is wearing a bit thin? I’ve seen the poster you accuse of this criticise plenty - unlike you she disagrees with the WFA cut for a start. I personally think the threshold is too low and that the two child benefit cap should go. I’m disappointed so far, this isn’t what I was hoping for.

Appreciated!

Yes i ve had several criticisms of Labour policy and on Starmer et al taking freebies, even if within the rules.

@Rummly You may agree on some Labour policies and have criticised the Tories too but you re an outlier on this, most tory supporting posters on this thread will not, in a million years, say a word against the Tories and Labour can never do any good.

It’s not petty. It’s only mentioned here because the issue of schools, catchment and privilege came up. As you say, there are a lot of other, much bigger problems with this government. But they weren’t quite so relevant to the point.

CurlewKate · 27/02/2025 09:26

@Rummly "But my point was that in answer to your defence of Starmer that he lived where he does now before having children, he apparently had access to other expensive means of ensuring a good learning environment for his child, to put it euphemistically."

This is so baffling. Unless I'm missing something, Starmer's child went to a family friend's house to revise to get away from the stress caused by his father being prime minister. The fact that a friend is a millionaire is irrelevant. Would you have been so exercised if he had gone to granny's? Or if the friend was an estate agent? Was there any significance in the fact that it was in Covent Garden?

The thread title is "Scared of what Labour will do"

Its not really or shouldn't be about how or what Starmer did for his children 4 or 5 years plus ago.... just a diversion because most of what Labour is doing is as good as it can be... our economic position is very very bad.

😂 what? You have zero idea if any body on this thread votes Tory (unless I’ve missed a post where someone has said ‘I vote Tory’).

You will also see on this very thread that there has been praise for Labour increasing defence funding.

Your statement is classic though.

So is yours. Nobody mentioned voting Tory, the post said Tory supporters. It’s so interesting that the accusations of tribalism come from the biggest tribalists.

CurlewKate · 27/02/2025 09:32

@Kittygolightlyy "You still don’t get it. Never mind"

No I don't. Because you won't say what you mean. Which is deeply tedious. Game plying is so very boring.

Tribalism? Tribalists? Do me a favour. We’re talking about politics not elephants or long ‘lost’ tribes in the Amazon.

Ps. If one is a Labour ‘supporter’ doesn’t it follow that one ‘votes Labour’? It’d be peculiar to be a Labour supporter who votes Tory.

Well, at least 2 posters have openly said they support the Tories either on here or other threads.... its not that heard to remember names.... & i doubt very much you're a Corbyn supporter, given your tone toward Labour?

It would be a reach for anyone one in the "centre/centre right" not to offer at least qualified support for increased defence spending... though their silence on why their party of choice didn't do this over the course of the last 14 years is deafening!

Edited

If you think being the supporter of a party automatically translates into a vote, why do you object to being assumed to being a Tory voter? There were plenty of Labour supporters who voted for whichever candidate was most likely to defeat the Tory in their constituency last July. Plenty lent the LibDems their vote. Political tribalism is a well known term, by the way.

So are you. You quite often talk about political tribalism, in fact as you’ve just demonstrated it’s one of your favourite subjects.

EasternStandard · 27/02/2025 09:44

Sure it did. I've voted for both Labour and Conservatives.

I'm fine with that. Others seem more stuck on the same every time.

I don't think the electorate are all like that though.

BIossomtoes · 27/02/2025 09:46

Stretching credulity here! 😂

EasternStandard · 27/02/2025 09:48

I bet.

It's amazing how tunnel visioned people are that they cannot get some in the electorate vote differently in different GEs

I get some of you are nailed to the wall Labour types.

Kittygolightlyy · 27/02/2025 09:50

I found it amusing but yeh if anyone's going to take the prize it's those who are so Labour they cannot even comprehend people vote switch.

How do people miss that? Is it by only talking to the staunchest Labour voters

There's a whole load of voters who change their minds each GE

Yes. They are always in their own Group Think. 🤷‍♀️

Was there any significance in the fact that it was in Covent Garden?

Why are you baffled?

Starmer himself came up with this dubious justification. (Reporters have said there was no scrum or loud noise outside his house anyway. And the press leaves children alone.)

But assuming the explanation is true (ignoring the weeks of use after the exams ended), I’m just pointing out that your implication that Starmer didn’t game anything for his children - because he’d lived in the house beforehand - isn’t strictly true.

I think it was you that said “rich man has rich friends shocker”. That’s fair. But it does rather undermine the ‘Starmer has done nothing out of the ordinary about his children’s education’ narrative.

I very, very much doubt that a Tory in Starmer’s position about the penthouse would have been given a pass by Labour supporters.

Ultimately what I detest most of all is Labour’s hypocrisy. Many of these smaller issues just pile up in that respect. The WFA cut - perfectly reasonable in itself - is a good example: why attack the Tories about it in November 2023 and then bring it in in July 2024? There’s a thread running about WASPI women which is another good example. Why suggest they’d pay out and then slam the door when in government? Why criticise the Tories savagely for private plane use and waste and then do the same?

It’s really all about trust and honesty. The country chucked out the Tories in large part because they were untrustworthy. The same will happen to Labour. They’re no better.
