Scared of what labour will do

Wantachangefor2024 · 22/02/2025 01:58

Is anyone else terrified of what labour will enforce. The tax on farmers. Will they means test pip? Will they tax state pension more? What else will they do and where will it all end. They ruthlessly without no care took away the winter fuel allowance. Means testing and taxing state pension would massively impact my family

With a scheme to buy up some properties and keep under local authority control or shared ownership that could be rectified.

Ok so where does the money come from for this?

There are still houses for sale in Plymouth around 200k, people simply cannot afford them... shared ownership or not.

Poor quality housing? the trouble is, as someone i know found out, she complained about thread bare carpets, LL refused to replace, a couple months later, she is served a Sect 21 notice... he now wants to sell....

The new renters bill wont protect tenants who complain, the LL is still able to evict for a variety of reasons, removing their licence just means another eviction.

In the short term, we don't have the money to buy up enough private properties or build more council houses, which requires the developer to be paid to build them.... and HA's funded to be able to purchase from the developer....

The current system is unsustainable, it will take creativity and the young alongside young families ( renters and first time buyers) should be the priority NOT greedy landlords as per under the Tories.

4C0rners · 23/02/2025 11:06

And yes there should be protection for renters like.your friend. Why should tax payers be funding shitty landlords and crappy housing like that?

I know a few BTL landlords, all are self employed trades people who have bought up 1 or 2 run down properties, done them up, rent them out, they have had to increase rents to cover rising mortgage costs and or to get a return that is equal too than what they can get from a savings account.

Yes there are shoddy landlords, just as there are bad tenants but the solution is not to force these LLs to sell, leaving their tenants homeless or have to pay even higher rents.

My village FB page has a constant stream of people asking if anyone knows of a 2/3 bed house, as they are being evicted....

ploppydoppy · 23/02/2025 11:11

@TheWildRobot not sure why you replied to my post with that. I already said lower & middle earners pay less tax than in other countries.

Sorry but the mortgage of shit landlords is not the responsibility of renters. If you can’t be a good LL then you shouldn’t be one. End of. It’s this sense of entitlement that needs to stop with more measures put in place to protect renters.

Well, as i ve pointed out, thats what is happening, they sell up and leave the sector.... how is that protecting renters?

In any business, extra costs are at least in part, passed on to the consumer, in this case the renter, if the business cannot make a profit, it goes bust, assets sold.....

If you want more renter protection, then we need an alternative that the private renter who has a shit LL can fall back on, atm that doesn't exist.... get that in place ie Council Housing, then introduce strong renter rights.

I disagree. Shit landlords should be weeded out ( once a shit landlord always a shit landlord)and tolerating shit accommodation because of LL not wanting to keep up to standards shouldn’t be facilitated. I wonder what they do across Europe where long term better quality rentals is more prevalent.

Any business will pass on an increase in costs to their consumers, why would it be different for landlords?

It’s not about reasonable costs but shitty landlords not providing value for money, warm, mold free, properly kept up property.

How beautifully put. I actually used to watch news and read obsessively on the latest, but I have built a cocoon and feel it is all scaremongering or skewed disinformation. So no, to the pp, I have never watched GB news

Of course you haven’t. But that’s how the left defend. They attack. It’s the only way they know how, bless them.

Of course landlords should be regulated and expected to keep properties well maintained and safe. However, rents increasing because of higher mortgage interests and new maintenance regulations is to be expected - it is as any business would do.

You missed the word reasonable and again if LL can’t afford to do it “ reasonably” the tax payer or renter shouldn’t be facilitating them.

Well this is what everyone voted for! Everyone cheered when my family was affected by the 20% VAT. How I’ve laughed now all the PIP and pension people are quaking in their boots! It’s not nice is it?!

What a thoroughly nasty post. You think laughing at vulnerable people in poverty is funny? You should be ashamed of yourself.

Rummly · 23/02/2025 11:57

This Labour government is laughably bad. And it seems that dishonesty, nepotism, hypocrisy and greed run through it like words through a stick of rock.

But these threads are a bit tiresome. It’s as if Tory or other non-Labour voters have become as bad as Labour supporters. If a Tory sneezed it was wailed about by Labour as an act of deceit or corruption.

I wish opposition comment could be a bit better and more thoughtful than the endless alarmism and falsehoods that Labour fans went in for.

Very little of what any government does is morally or politically ‘wrong’. For the most part all politicians are just making choices.

Katypp · 23/02/2025 12:12

@4C0rners it's clear that you will not engage with any other rhetoric than all landlords are shitty, get rid of the lot of them.
Donning my hard hat here, I was a landlord of three BTL. My houses were well maintained, damp and mould free and all legal requirements were met. I was also a member of the council's voluntary registration scheme.
One tenant was fabulous, no problems.
The other two houses were taken by families who didn't pay their rent, trashed the houses and didn't tell me of any problems and refused inspection visits.
Always managed to keep their arrears below the amount when I could evict ( at my cost) and repair the houses (at my cost)
I got out, thankfully before rent arrears were legally ignored over the pandemic.
The rent I received didn't even cover the mortgages without taking into account the repairs.
The good tenant bought his house at a discount.
All landlords are not 'shitty' I'm afraid.
Unfortunately, a lot of the good ones - who pay for what they should and follow every rule - are getting out because of experiences like mine, leaving the ones who don't repair with a lot of the housing stock.
Renters' rights are all well and good if both parties follow the rules. If they don't, the law comes down massively on the side if the renter.
But you won't see that, just that all landlords are shitty, get rid of them all.

Practicepracticepracticeagain · 23/02/2025 12:50

@Katypp completely agree. Had a similar experience with horrendous tenants. Sold up and won’t ever do it again.

Yes shit LLs should be weeded out, no one is saying otherwise.

BUT the measures already exist, there is just zero enforcement and the new renters bill will only pile costs onto LLs who will pass these on to the tenants, just as Tesco pass on their increased costs to all of us...

The waiting list for social housing in Plymouth has 12000 families on it, the list is forever increasing, up 4000 in just 18months...as LLs sell up, some people in need will never get off that list.

What do you think is driving this sell off by LLs ?

If you want better standards, then provide an alternative to private rent first.... because at the end of the day a house with thread bare carpets is far better than a cardbox in a doorway or a hostel with drug abusers and sex workers living there.
My friend bitterly regrets complaining about the carpets and wishes she'd just bought some new ones herself.

Not quite. I think threads about, say, Reynolds’s dodgy CV are reasonable: topical story, says a lot about the man, is one of a string of dubious CV claims by Labour ministers. Or threads about Reeves busting her own fiscal rules.

But “AIBU to be terrified that Labour will destroy the country?” or “Will Starmer take away my child’s education?”, not so much.

dannyufcfan · 23/02/2025 14:50

Everyone will always find out fault with the current government. Whoever they are. It was ever thus.

We just had a 14 year farce. Let's wait and see how things shake out in a couple of years of Labour.

Got to remember most media in this country is right wing so they were never going to be fans of the current lot. Got to wade through the hyperbole.

TBH i'm more concerned about the present day and the decisions made by Labour than i am by what someone did or didn't write on their CV many years ago.
I think the relevant question should be "Did Reynolds become business secretary because he said "Solicitor" instead of "Trainee Solicitor?"

I doubt very much it would have made any difference at all.

However, i do take your point about hypocrisy.

Yellowrosessmellpetaly · 23/02/2025 14:56

I'm concerned Reeves could abolish welfare for those with long term health conditions. Why she thinks punishing those who have limited capacity for work angers me.

I find it hard to believe that any Tory caught lying about professional qualifications wouldn’t have attracted endless attacks on here, on Twitter, in the Guardian etc etc. And it does look like the excuses wheeled out for Reynolds have blamed others - ‘little’ people. Which is very unpleasant.

A willingness to lie about that sort of thing says a lot.
