Are you wary of travelling to USA currently?

I am sure you will tell me I’m BU, but that’s fine!
I’ve been to the states numerous times - Florida (all over, not just Disney/Orlando), New York City, California (los Angeles), Massachusetts and New Orleans.
Myself and 2 adult DCs were planning to go to Orlando again this October. Primarily for Halloween and DS (28) is autistic & very fixated with all things Disney.
DD (30) and I decided not to go ahead and take DS to Disneyland Paris instead. Yes, we’ve been there before, and it doesn’t really compare to the US version (IMO) not even close, but DS won’t mind.
it’s solely down to the current POS in charge and all his minions. America seems (to me) to be on a knife edge, very volatile, and DD being LGBT is understandably unsettled too.
I am not the sort of person who usually would even give a moment’s thought to something like this, but I just have a really uneasy feeling about going there. Chances are, at age 58, I may never go again.
AIBU or would you be thinking twice at the moment about travelling there? (especially Florida which is a red state)
I detest that man SO much!

LGB. Sorry I should’ve clarified.

I honestly don't think anyone cares about people's private sex life. How would anyone even know

ByQuaintAzureWasp · 21/02/2025 18:00

I won't be supporting the US unless I have no other choice.

DuchessDissasster · 21/02/2025 18:02

Upstartled · 21/02/2025 14:52

No. I'd happily go to America.
Civil war, Jesus🤣

I have to agree with you there.

I wouldn't ever go myself as I'm not comfortable going to places where gun ownership, and indeed use, is seen as a God-given right.
Of course, the chances of being caught up in their willful violence is very small, as it largely happens in shopping malls, schools and churches, rather than tourist hotspots.
All that aside, I'm told it's lovely..

Who needs a gun when a knife or car in a dance hall or Christmas market will do

I wouldn't take my eldest there at the moment. They are LGBTQ+ and I would worry for their safety.

Your eldest isn't all those letters at once. I'm L and my partner and I go to Miami next month.

IncessantNameChanger · 21/02/2025 18:07

I think Trump had a big majority win so why the worry of civil unrest? I could be totally nieve here and I don't pretend to be politically savy but America has never been bombed in a war and never been under threat of invasion so I guess Americans can't relate to the Ukraine situation very well compared to some other countries.

It wouldn't stop me going to the US I love NYC. What I wouldn't do is enter any debate on what I thought politically when there.

No one will give a hoot if tourists pull back from America. Life is short and increasingly unstable so live it. We have zero impact on how this plays out. Next year for all we know things might get worse and the option to go isn't there any more

Yeah I meant his original election in 2016 @MissConductUS! 😬😬

I see. He did come out of nowhere back then.

Sunnydays25 · 21/02/2025 18:11

I think civil war is unlikely, as the people most willing to use force to get what they want are in power, but there is a chance that some States could decide to leave the Union, and Trump would not be happy at all to lose California for example.

biggreenapple24 · 21/02/2025 18:11

No I wouldn't go at the moment. I'm pregnant and don't trust that I'd be safe should I need medical attention.

I also just don't know if I could deal with being surrounded by so many potential trump supporters. I already find myself wondering "did YOU vote for him?" when I have calls with US companies or see Americans on Insta/Tiktok.

FKAT · 21/02/2025 18:11

I'm wary of travelling to the US mainly because of the food prices. I remember sending DC last year to the corner shop in Miami Beach with $20 and they came back with 2 cans of pop and a small pack of sweets. DH paid $90 for breakfast in a chain restaurant last week.

Civil War? Grin

Meadowfinch · 21/02/2025 18:13

YANBU OP.

I don't think there will be a civil war but with the inflammatory nonsense coming out of the US government, and the growing contempt for women's rights, I won't be going back for the next few years.

My dniece who currently lives in New Mexico is trying to confirm a placement back in the UK, so she can bring her family home. I'll be glad when they are home.

Team Canada 🇨🇦

Winning last night sure did feel good though didn’t it? 😃

The US can still win if Mike Pence has the courage to do the right thing.

aModernClassic · 21/02/2025 17:29

@Hoppinggreen - I don't know your DD's situation, but if you're referring to her maybe needing an abortion whilst on a two week holiday, I think you have bigger things to worry about.

You misunderstand
DD is not currently Pg and is unlikely to be for some years if at all.
My point is IF someone was pg and needed care for a MC or similar I would be concerned they might not get it
There have been cases in countries that do not offer abortions on demand where women have been very ill and died because doctors would not remove the remains of a dead or very ill baby to save the mother.

We’ve never been bombed, unless you count Pearl Harbor or 9/11. I think we can relate to Ukraine’s situation. We’ve given quite a lot of aid in the last three years.

Trump has a big margin of victory in the electoral college, and a smaller margin of victory in the popular vote.

Edited to add that I’m a New Yorker, and I’m so pleased that you like to holiday here. We love our British tourists.

Holgen · 21/02/2025 18:21

I would definitely be wary of flying in the USA at the moment; they have had four major aviation incidents this year alone and are now taking it further by sacking their airline safety staff. It's an offputting thought.

However, I would not travel to a fair number of countries in the middle east for their record on certain things which matter to me, and the USA now also belongs in that bracket.

RetroTotty · 21/02/2025 18:24

ExtraOnions · 21/02/2025 17:54

I have relatives in Minnesota, who are convinced that a Civil War is coming.

Personally, I think Musk will start to raise, and arm, his own personally militia .. and then it will hit the fan

Musk is very very dangerous right now. Unhinged and unpredictable.

I would suggest your DH got ripped off and as for spending 20 bucks in a corner shop what do you expect ? 🙄

Blimey you've taken this personally.

DuchessDissasster · 21/02/2025 18:27

There are comments on here that are just as barking mad as Trump supporters that have never left their township 😂

DuchessDissasster · 21/02/2025 18:28

@FKAT no I'm just pointing out what a ridiculous example you gave ime.

emmetgirl · 21/02/2025 18:31

I have a sibling that's lived there for 20+ years. I've been over there many times to many different places.
I have to say though I'm in no hurry to spend any of my very hard earned money there at the moment.

We did consider Japan, but DD & I are hoping to do a cruise there next year anyway. Because of DS’s autism/sensory issues, we thought it would be difficult to find food he would eat there.

How restrictive is his eating? In Tokyo and Osaka there is no shortage of convenience stores and fast food. If you’re in the big cities even a very picky eater won’t go hungry.

whatonearthisgoingonnow · 21/02/2025 18:32

Have you considered Tokyo Disneyland instead? The Universal there looks amazing too.

edit: just read you have! I'd definitely go there instead

kattaduck · 21/02/2025 18:39

I wouldn't go right now. I can hardly even stomach to see Trump on my TV right now so being around Trump supporters would not be a relaxing holiday. Should things quiet down in the future I would probably reconsider.
I would also be scared that a government who is anti European might embolden its citizens to voice these views towards me.

Do I believe in a Civil War with boots on the ground?
Not right now but I don't think it's totally out of the question. The US is a deeply divided country right now with violent militias on the rise after the January 6th pardons.
I can see more violent attacks like Charlottesville happening in the future.

Very restrictive!
However as DD & I are planning to do Japan next year, then there’s no point going in a few months. Plus all these trips are going to be so costly as it is. This is an opportunity that has come our way thanks to an inheritance.
