Are you wary of travelling to USA currently?

I am sure you will tell me I’m BU, but that’s fine!
I’ve been to the states numerous times - Florida (all over, not just Disney/Orlando), New York City, California (los Angeles), Massachusetts and New Orleans.
Myself and 2 adult DCs were planning to go to Orlando again this October. Primarily for Halloween and DS (28) is autistic & very fixated with all things Disney.
DD (30) and I decided not to go ahead and take DS to Disneyland Paris instead. Yes, we’ve been there before, and it doesn’t really compare to the US version (IMO) not even close, but DS won’t mind.
it’s solely down to the current POS in charge and all his minions. America seems (to me) to be on a knife edge, very volatile, and DD being LGBT is understandably unsettled too.
I am not the sort of person who usually would even give a moment’s thought to something like this, but I just have a really uneasy feeling about going there. Chances are, at age 58, I may never go again.
AIBU or would you be thinking twice at the moment about travelling there? (especially Florida which is a red state)
I detest that man SO much!

We’ve never been bombed, unless you count Pearl Harbor or 9/11. I think we can relate to Ukraine’s situation. We’ve given quite a lot of aid in the last three years.

Trump has a big margin of victory in the electoral college, and a smaller margin of victory in the popular vote.

Edited to add that I’m a New Yorker, and I’m so pleased that you like to holiday here. We love our British tourists.

I’m still amazed that Trump got voted in - he’s an idiot with zero skills.

It's the Gulf of Mexico.
Canada is not a US state.
Gaza is not a real estate trade.
Greenland is not for sale.
The world is not American.

I'm wary of travelling to the US mainly because of the food prices. I remember sending DC last year to the corner shop in Miami Beach with $20 and they came back with 2 cans of pop and a small pack of sweets. DH paid $90 for breakfast in a chain restaurant last week.

Civil War? Grin

Gosh, I remember when the US was v reasonable for food shopping! And the $1.99 all you can eat breakfasts. 😳

Not going to visit usa until trump is gone
as a matter of principle
why would I spend money in a place where
the crazy misogynist racist warmongering man is in charge voted in by the people
theres not much we can do but if everyone boycotted travel there , it would at least send a message come on guys don’t go to the Usa until he’s gone

CanadianJohn · 21/02/2025 18:54

dottiehens · 21/02/2025 17:06

Yea, pls keep it handy. In the meantime may be check how much New York City and California get in revenue from tourists? Do you think that a pathetic little group of idiots trying to boycott by not travelling there would bankrupt the US? Specially as the OP came to said she went last in 2008. Laughable.

Also, does she knows Obama records in selling guns? Or the ramdom attacks happening in France. 🤣

Edited

The "pathetic little group of idiots" spend lots of money in the US.
Some quotes from today's newspapers:

“A 10 per cent reduction in Canadian travel could mean 2.0 million fewer visits, $2.1 billion in lost spending and 14,000 job losses,”

and in a different paper

"A total of 56 per cent of Canadians say they will not travel to the United States or have cancelled plans to do so. Only 11 per cent said they will make no change."

I suspect a lot of Florida businesses will be feeling a chill.

Oh good, another thread where Brits act all morally superior and judge the US. Please remember that Trump is not a dictator, he was democratically elected but a huge number of people did not support him. Life is no different with him in power despite the hate speech that he spews, a small group of awful people may feel empowered by it but they are the minority, especially in blue states where we still have governments who will protect the rights of women, minorities and the LGBTQ community. Being morally superior is kind of a slap in the face to a lot of people who agree with you in states that do rely on tourist $ for their economy. And Disney is not pro Trump and has a contentious relationship with the governor of FL so giving them $ isn’t supporting anything terrible. We aren’t all bad here or devoid of a moral compass so the high horse attitude gets really old on here.

I’m not British but live in Canada and yes we are being morally superior whilst Trump is threatening to take Canada as the 51st State. In reality many Americans would probably prefer to live north of the border.

Florida isn’t a safe state for anyone gay.

I thought most of the Disney cast are gay?

Crushed23 · 21/02/2025 19:19

I live here and everything is fine. In fact, my quality of life has improved vastly since leaving the UK last year!

He may have been legally elected, but his behaviour since then is not following in that vein. Although I wouldn’t expect any different from a convicted felon

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 21/02/2025 19:22

I get that it must be rubbish to be anti-Trump in the US right now. Part of the problem is that we are not hearing from many within the US actually speaking out against the Trump regime, so it looks like people don't really care.

Are there Americans out marching in the streets to protest against their dreadful leader? What are they doing to make their voices heard?

Because if they don't care enough to actually stand up and mount a convincing opposition to what's happening, then that makes them complicit in my view, and I will be sticking with my personal decision to minimise the amount of my money going to support the current US regime.

You’re happy living in a country with a convicted felon as President who constantly lies and now threatens other countries?

Fangisnotacoward · 21/02/2025 19:23

I wouldn't go on principle, but that's just me.

Crushed23 · 21/02/2025 19:23

Lol at the exaggerated posts about CoL. Yes, food is expensive but $90 on breakfast is in no way representative. A breakfast out for me is a $6 bagel, or $15 if I want to stretch to avo-toast. I don't remember London being much cheaper tbh.

Shakeoffyourchains · 21/02/2025 19:31

Upstartled · 21/02/2025 14:52

No. I'd happily go to America.
Civil war, Jesus🤣

Not sure why your laughing at the idea.

It's not like the right wing are going to realise they've been played like fools by the likes of rump and Musk.

In a year or so time, when their lives have gotten worse, not better, they'll continue swallow the rhetoric and blame migrants, liberals, LGBT, democrats, etc, etc for their woes and it'll only be a short hop to pogroms of the "left" from there.

Crushed23 · 21/02/2025 19:31

It doesn't cross my mind, in all honesty. Day to day life is great here and an improvement on when I lived in the UK. This is my personal experience, I obviously can't speak for everyone who lives here. But I am a very positive and grateful person in general - a more 'American' attitude to life than a British one, I guess. Maybe that's why I like it so much here. Tonight I am going to a rave with my date and a group of friends, having had to chose from a myriad of things to do on a Friday night because we live in such an exciting city and everyone in my social circle here loves going out (and has ample disposable income to do so because jobs pay a lot better). There are so many reasons that I can't get into, but life is just so good here. 🙂

Oh the irony....

Our own PM has been caught out in a number of lies already in his short time in.

Threatening other countries? The use of StormShadow to target installations in Russia.....

We as a country are not innocent and wholesome. So shouldn't really be throwing stones.

Thankfully when we left the UK, we chose Canada 🇨🇦

EasternStandard · 21/02/2025 19:38

I don't have a desire to go anyway but if I did I'd still go

I feel lucky enough to have travelled there when younger and would choose other places rn

I live in Canada, not the UK and Trump is threatening us.

Some of these comments are verging on hysteria. I’m not a Trump fan but wouldn’t think twice about visiting the US and will do later this year.
I don’t anticipate my experience being any different to any other time I’ve travelled -
I’m not sure exactly what people think might happen?!

I don’t think anything is going to happen to tourists - we were in Boston last night for the 4Nations final and there wasn’t any trouble. It’s more whether you want to visit a country with Trump as President who is threatening to take other countries, ethnically cleanse Gaza and align with Putin over Ukraine?

Imbusytodaysorry · 21/02/2025 20:07

@RosaMoline why at 58 would you never get to go to America again?

Also is everyone thinking civil war on America is no one thinking along the lines of world war. ?

Wouldn’t rule it out completely…when HE’s gone…but in all honesty, I feel that next year will be the last time I go on any long haul trips. I’ll probably stick to European destinations after I’ve hopefully been to Japan. My favourite place is Mijas pueblo.

Quite honestly, your H should have got up and left after he read the menu. I have spent a lot less than $90 on dinner delivery for five adults. Also, giving a child cash and sending him or her alone to a corner shop isn't a good idea.

Donotwantnot · 21/02/2025 20:47

Don’t go. I’d rather my plane isn’t full of irrational people spouting hyperbole when I travel. Thanks.
