Are you wary of travelling to USA currently?

I am sure you will tell me I’m BU, but that’s fine!
I’ve been to the states numerous times - Florida (all over, not just Disney/Orlando), New York City, California (los Angeles), Massachusetts and New Orleans.
Myself and 2 adult DCs were planning to go to Orlando again this October. Primarily for Halloween and DS (28) is autistic & very fixated with all things Disney.
DD (30) and I decided not to go ahead and take DS to Disneyland Paris instead. Yes, we’ve been there before, and it doesn’t really compare to the US version (IMO) not even close, but DS won’t mind.
it’s solely down to the current POS in charge and all his minions. America seems (to me) to be on a knife edge, very volatile, and DD being LGBT is understandably unsettled too.
I am not the sort of person who usually would even give a moment’s thought to something like this, but I just have a really uneasy feeling about going there. Chances are, at age 58, I may never go again.
AIBU or would you be thinking twice at the moment about travelling there? (especially Florida which is a red state)
I detest that man SO much!

@Hoppinggreen - I don't know your DD's situation, but if you're referring to her maybe needing an abortion whilst on a two week holiday, I think you have bigger things to worry about.

No they are not heading to a civil war. The media in the UK need to chill and leave the US alone, too much coverage of the US creating a the anxiety and weird statements that they r heading to a civil war.

It's fine if you don't want to visit, but people are not running around fighting on the streets for politics.

I feel sorry for those in charge of The Hall of Presidents at Magic Kingdom having to prepare for theTrump audio animatronic..

BellaCiao23 · 21/02/2025 17:34

I’m not going to America.

Whereareyourshoes · 21/02/2025 17:34

Have loved our many visits to the USA but no plans to go back while the current administration is in place. Would rather spend my money elsewhere.

Parker231 · 21/02/2025 17:39

Ilovelifeverymuch · 21/02/2025 17:26

To be fair I think countries like the UK consume too much news about the US, an unhealthy amount of news about the US.

Yes it's good to get international news but balanced.

I’m in Canada close to the US border - we are getting a huge amount of Trump news with his threats of making Canada the 51st state and imposing more tariffs. The majority of Canadians have no problem with the US public but we hate Trump. Booing the American national anthem is popular now.

Yea, pls keep it handy. In the meantime may be check how much New York City and California get in revenue from tourists? Do you think that a pathetic little group of idiots trying to boycott by not travelling there would bankrupt the US? Specially as the OP came to said she went last in 2008. Laughable.

Also, does she knows Obama records in selling guns? Or the ramdom attacks happening in France. 🤣

Edited

@dottiehens

if you’d bothered to read my post properly, I said I last went to FLORIDA in 2008.

My last visit was in fact 2018 - New Orleans.

That’s not the problem. The issue is ‘if’ you happen to be pregnant while in the states (some states) and you start to miscarry and need medical care, they can’t provide it. Women are dying. (And yes, when we go to the states we go for 3 weeks so it’s entirely possible that we’d be there for the entire stretch of time an abortion is a legal option. Many places have a time limit on that option - including 17 states where it’s illegal after 6 weeks pregnant, such as Florida)

I would hope we’d have enough time to fly home if my daughter wanted an abortion but an emergency could happen and I would never forgive myself if I put her in that situation.

bumblefeline · 21/02/2025 17:42

I'm planning our usual summer two weeks to the USA at the moment and will be going. Hoping the flights come down in price a bit with everyone planning on not going.

RaspberryRipple2 · 21/02/2025 17:42

We are going back soon, no concerns really (I am very anti-fascist btw), don’t expect anything to change in Florida which has always been conservative / random roadside anti abortion signs etc. don’t see how this affects a holiday?

There’s no more likely to be riots etc there than there is here (or in Paris for that matter). The US is extremely multicultural, much more so than here, no one is going to bat an eyelid at other races etc in Orlando.

I’d never cancel a holiday and lose my money unless the FCO advised against travel and it was therefore covered by insurance. I don’t go on holiday to support the political leanings of a country, usually I don’t have a clue what their politics are and I suspect the vast majority don’t either.

Rainingalldayonmyhead · 21/02/2025 17:43

Would I be weary? No.

Would I ever want to travel there again? Hell no.

So many other wonderful places in the world to visit without supporting their tourism economy.

You would be hard pressed to think of many things (except specific monuments like the Statue of Liberty for example) that you couldn’t find elsewhere.

Why on earth would you go there.

They already have the Trump animatronic from last time! It’s a terrible likeness though, the other more recent ones are much better….

Confused ? Nah just sick of the idiots throwing the toys out of the pram. The US is perfectly fine to travel to may be check that advise of travel to US in the government page. Are they advising people not to travel to the US? It must be confusing being so dumb.

Edited

Talking of idiots throwing their toys out of the pram, your posts about Bridget Phillipson and VAT on private school fees have been hilariously unhinged. Talk about taking things personally!

Anyway, lots of people with a normal moral compass are reluctant to travel to the US now that it's run by a bunch of fascists who are quite relaxed about giving Nazi salutes (Elon and Steve Bannon to name two of them).

Is it open now then? I thought it was closed. Yeah I saw it last time, and it was truly terrible.. 😅

tobee · 21/02/2025 17:49

See I trust @MissConductUS. Although, people thought it was wildly unlikely Trump would be elected president once upon a time. 😟

PeloMom · 21/02/2025 17:51

Yes. I’m about 45mins drive from the US border and was planning to go for spring break but I’ll skip it for now. Used to go every other week or so but given the current climate + tariffs is not an economy I’d support at this point.

I have relatives in Minnesota, who are convinced that a Civil War is coming.

Personally, I think Musk will start to raise, and arm, his own personally militia .. and then it will hit the fan

PeskyPotato · 21/02/2025 17:55

I wouldn't take my eldest there at the moment. They are LGBTQ+ and I would worry for their safety.

Takoneko · 21/02/2025 17:57

OP- Have you considered Tokyo Disney? Would your family be interested in visiting Japan? There’s also Universal Studios in Osaka.

The Tokyo Disney parks are fantastic. Disneysea is usually ranked as the best Disney park in the world. This blog is useful if it’s something you might consider.

I hope for the sake of realism, the Trump animatronic spouts utter garbage and gibberish from it’s ugly duck lips.

Thanks for the vote of confidence.😁

Anyone who thought Trump’s re-election was wildly unlikely wasn’t reading the polls. He’s had a very stable base of support.

We did consider Japan, but DD & I are hoping to do a cruise there next year anyway. Because of DS’s autism/sensory issues, we thought it would be difficult to find food he would eat there.
