Are you wary of travelling to USA currently?

I am sure you will tell me I’m BU, but that’s fine!
I’ve been to the states numerous times - Florida (all over, not just Disney/Orlando), New York City, California (los Angeles), Massachusetts and New Orleans.
Myself and 2 adult DCs were planning to go to Orlando again this October. Primarily for Halloween and DS (28) is autistic & very fixated with all things Disney.
DD (30) and I decided not to go ahead and take DS to Disneyland Paris instead. Yes, we’ve been there before, and it doesn’t really compare to the US version (IMO) not even close, but DS won’t mind.
it’s solely down to the current POS in charge and all his minions. America seems (to me) to be on a knife edge, very volatile, and DD being LGBT is understandably unsettled too.
I am not the sort of person who usually would even give a moment’s thought to something like this, but I just have a really uneasy feeling about going there. Chances are, at age 58, I may never go again.
AIBU or would you be thinking twice at the moment about travelling there? (especially Florida which is a red state)
I detest that man SO much!

I'm not convinced of a civil war but equally, I think the United States of America has never been so divided.

What Trump has failed to realise is that he is the President for every citizen, not just those who are his MAGA fans.

Literally yesterday on camera, his right hand man Steve Bannon did a nazi salute - as did Elon at the inaugoration. That shit cannot be left unsaid or uncriticised

At the same time, the governor of the state I live in made an explicitly anti Nazi speech along with the presenting of the state budget.

Meanwhile an Ipsos poll shows trump polling below 50%. Yes, that's a lower case t.

Do not go they won’t need you or your money. Go somewhere where your values aligned. You seem way too old to be in a place where you do not want to be. However, they will be ok either way if you go or not. Plus, there does not seem to be a running hysteria about not going.

Thank you (sarcasm) for your ageist comment. On that note, your orange messiah (I’ve seen you defending him on other posts) is nearly 80 and most definitely unhinged. And yes, before you attack me with ‘whataboutery’ I do think Biden was too old as well.

Well that is ok he won’t be releected anyway. However, the polls? Really still on about polls after the last election polls? 🤔

StandFirm · 21/02/2025 15:13

There are indeed a lot of good people who care about the future of their country who will not take that crap lying down.

GildedRage · 21/02/2025 15:15

I could see an attempt to take over Canada with military and an ensuing war.
Support Canada instead of the lying cheats.

itsnotabouthepasta · 21/02/2025 15:15

Can I ask @mathanxiety what has been the general consensus in your state about how they have been conducting themselves domestically and internationally? The alignment with Russia must be shocking surely?

Its hard to guage any insight when the media coverage is so inflammatory

Orange messiah? Who is that? What is that talk? I do not know what you mean with that? I do not live my life by having politics to rule my world. I think some people are way too ridiculous and affecting their own mental health. May be I should have said you are a grown up and should not go if you feel that way?

Thank you, but we’ve made the decision to go to the Paris one now 100%. I was just interested in finding out other MNetters views.
Like I said, I’m not usually the sort of person to worry about anything like this.
It sounds ridiculous, but I just have/had a really bad feeling about going there. I know that sounds irrational. A real sense of unease.

Far more chance of being involved in public disturbance in Paris than any of the American tourist areas.

The problem is that politics DO rule the world I'm afraid. It'll come and bite you in the arse whether you like it or not.

He’s repeatedly mentioning a third term. He doesn’t think the rules apply to him.

Sunnydays25 · 21/02/2025 15:18

I wouldn't go to the US as I wouldn't want to support any country with an autocratic ruler, and travelling to the US as a tourist is supporting the current regime - I also wouldn't go to Dubai, Saudi or Israel

I would also be worried that Tump has embolded racist misogynists to call out anyone they don't like the look of, and as I'm not a white Christian man, I don't want to risk being told to 'go home' by someone with a gun.

mindutopia · 21/02/2025 15:19

I am a US citizen and I would not travel to the US right now. I’m so sure of that that I’ve let my dc’s passports lapse and will only keep mine current because I do still have family there and might have to travel in an emergency (but reluctantly!).

Stop being deliberately obtuse. You know perfectly well who I’m referring to.
And like I said, I’ve seen you kissing his backside on other threads.
Delusional.

She is a grown up. She is not going.

I’m not in the UK or America, but politics does very much affect everyone.

He can mention it all he wants, he still denies he lost the 2020 election but Biden took over anyway. I believe it needs two thirds of congress to change the constitution which he won’t get so I can’t see him staying on for a third term. I’m sure he’ll get like last time but if anything I think last time showed how robust the American constitution is.

We won’t be going into Paris city centre. Disneyland Paris is on the outskirts. I’ve been to Paris a few times and wasn’t worried (yes, I know there have been terrorist acts committed there) - I live close to London, and don’t give it a second thought when I go into the city. It’s comparable to Paris in my opinion.

Which is precisely why he is on a swift demolition mission. His aim must be to make the constitution toothless by the Midterms. If he succeeds, the US election process would be about as fair as Russia's.

BigDecisionWorthIt · 21/02/2025 15:25

I've gone for YABU. But at the same time YANBU because it's upto you on how comfortable/uncomfortable you feel with travelling there.

Not an ideal or best time with Trump.

Although some changes lgbt wise, that's not changed for travellers/immigration. I know enough through the immigration discords I am on where travel/moving/entering for the first time has been completely normal, safe and welcomed.

Overall, still safer than Paris and France has had more unrest recently than America.

FuckMeUpFlorida · 21/02/2025 15:26

Yes I'm headed there next month, but then I live in a 'scary' middle eastern country so it's water off a ducks back when you're hearing negativity all the time.

DH is American and all of his nuclear family are based there. Going on our annual visit to a red state.

Not advising. We are adults and can decide for ourselves, same as you. And we don’t want to go anymore. It’s got nothing to do with that they don’t need our money, we just don’t want to go. It’s not a great country.
