Are you wary of travelling to USA currently?

I am sure you will tell me I’m BU, but that’s fine!
I’ve been to the states numerous times - Florida (all over, not just Disney/Orlando), New York City, California (los Angeles), Massachusetts and New Orleans.
Myself and 2 adult DCs were planning to go to Orlando again this October. Primarily for Halloween and DS (28) is autistic & very fixated with all things Disney.
DD (30) and I decided not to go ahead and take DS to Disneyland Paris instead. Yes, we’ve been there before, and it doesn’t really compare to the US version (IMO) not even close, but DS won’t mind.
it’s solely down to the current POS in charge and all his minions. America seems (to me) to be on a knife edge, very volatile, and DD being LGBT is understandably unsettled too.
I am not the sort of person who usually would even give a moment’s thought to something like this, but I just have a really uneasy feeling about going there. Chances are, at age 58, I may never go again.
AIBU or would you be thinking twice at the moment about travelling there? (especially Florida which is a red state)
I detest that man SO much!

Being in possession of the equipment doesn't prove that she was going to use it to work while she was there. Eight days in solitary confinement is utterly cruel, bearing in mind that she's not been charged with (let alone convicted of) any crime.

ICE certainly do not mess around, they've got quotas to fill. There have been documented instances of them detaining Green Card holders to pressure them into leaving voluntarily, even though they've got the right to live and work in the US. It's the sort of stuff you'd expect of Russia. Mind you, Putin is very much idolised by the POTUS...

Yeah sure. She was just carrying bout expensive and heavy equipment used for her job for fun. She wasn’t working

Agreed. Or applying it in good faith. Or having available judges to hear cases in good time. Or not just deciding to ‘revoke’ green cards. Or putting you in detention centers far from where you were originally detained and not updating records allowing loved ones to locate you.

Edited

It’s very rare to revoke a green card. Is immigration can be chaotic and heavy handed but no point making stuff up

Canadian, here, I was planning on going to the states in the spring to meet up with friends. I am no longer going. No fucking way am I setting foot over the border and spending my money to support their economy. I will spend my vacation in Canada,

I have family in Canada, beautiful place, Would never travel to USA really dont appeal. Shame more people don't venture to Canada, it's vast outstanding beauty and Canadians lovley .

Why is a library on the border anyway? Surely the existing entrance has to be either in the US or in Canada? Otherwise there is no border.

The entrance is in US, there's a footpath around which Canadians patrons used. Now they are making their own entrance, whether they ll be allowed in the US 'side' inside is the next question I guess

As a heterosexual, sexually-active woman, I wouldn’t go to any state with mad abortion legislation. All too easy to die if a miscarriage if that’s the reading of the abortion law that the hospital you happen to end up takes.

In fact I have a friend who had a complicated miscarriage at 14 weeks, but then bled a lot when some of the products of conception got stuck in her cervix . Had she been somewhere with no-abortion-at-any-point or no-abortion-after-X-weeks where they strive to save the life of the “baby” over that of the woman, she would have bled to death.

Not much of a prospect- however unlikely it is- just to have a chance to eat 48 flavours of Oreo.

That is possible but doubt it would affect tourists overly much, you'd just come home early. People are still going to America and coming back in one piece. My son will be going there in a few weeks to work for a couple of months, in various states, he does every year. He cannot stand the organge man but manages to get home unscathed.

If you want to go, go.

We just cancelled our holiday to US, I don’t think we will go when this administration is in charge.
we went during DT s first term and did not have any issues but this term, it all looks very unhinged !
Luckily, we won’t loose any money and we will go somewhere in Europe/ Canada this year.

TizerorFizz · 26/03/2025 15:12

@ProfessorLayton1 Which companies don’t ask for a deposit? Ours was a lot so we are going and we had already paid for the flights. There’s plans and then there’s £thousands down the pan.

ProfessorLayton1 · 26/03/2025 15:24

We didn’t book the flight tickets, as we were waiting for my daughter’s exam results and was in the middle of a family emergency.
we had all the national park reservations with free cancellation. Hotel reservations were the same, so didn’t loose any money.
we generally book everything ourselves and always look for cancellation policy before doing so. Understand that if you are going to loose thousands of pounds, it’s difficult.
We love going to US and was really looking forward to it.

Slowhorses1 · 27/03/2025 18:36

We’re going in a couple of weeks. Part work, park family visit. Slightly nervous to say the least. Feels like they could pull anything right now.
