Are you wary of travelling to USA currently?

I am sure you will tell me I’m BU, but that’s fine!
I’ve been to the states numerous times - Florida (all over, not just Disney/Orlando), New York City, California (los Angeles), Massachusetts and New Orleans.
Myself and 2 adult DCs were planning to go to Orlando again this October. Primarily for Halloween and DS (28) is autistic & very fixated with all things Disney.
DD (30) and I decided not to go ahead and take DS to Disneyland Paris instead. Yes, we’ve been there before, and it doesn’t really compare to the US version (IMO) not even close, but DS won’t mind.
it’s solely down to the current POS in charge and all his minions. America seems (to me) to be on a knife edge, very volatile, and DD being LGBT is understandably unsettled too.
I am not the sort of person who usually would even give a moment’s thought to something like this, but I just have a really uneasy feeling about going there. Chances are, at age 58, I may never go again.
AIBU or would you be thinking twice at the moment about travelling there? (especially Florida which is a red state)
I detest that man SO much!

I don’t think I’m afraid of visiting America but I certainly wouldn’t bother these days.

I get what you’re saying, but it’s not just that. The whole place doesn’t ’feel safe’ for a number of reasons.

I understand that the media perception makes it seem not safe.
But statistically, the US is safer than the UK.

England crime rate (2024):
Overall: 87 crimes per 1000 people
Violent crime: 35 per 1000
Both overall crime rate and violent crime rate had increased from. 2023

US (2023):
Violent crime: 3.64 per 1000 people
Violent crime reduced by approximately 3% between 2022 and 2023

Those stats are from the FBI. Now Trump actually criticises this for not being accurate and himself has suggested the NCV Survey is a more reputable source for crime stats.
Even looking at this, the NCV survey has the violent crime rate at 22.5 per 1000 people. Still lower than the UK.

@dottiehens No one is arguing that not going on holiday is going to bring down trump.
As I have already said, I do not trust their current ability to ensure air safety.

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 21/02/2025 17:05

Quite honestly, regardless of any concerns about safety, I would not personally be choosing to hand over my hard earned cash to the current US regime.

This is the main issue for me. I am actively choosing not to spend my money on/in the US now.

We previously went every other year

Hitchinkitchen · 21/02/2025 17:08

I’d happily go again.

Newgirls · 21/02/2025 17:09

I was in the US recently and saw far more rainbow flags than trump flags.

Parker231 · 21/02/2025 17:10

We live just over the border and as a result of Trump’s threats to Canada, we are limiting our trips.

dottiehens · 21/02/2025 17:10

Recitalbouquet · 21/02/2025 17:05

Right - so does anyone seriously believe the republicans and democrats are going to start shooting at each other?

No it is a few posters going on and on about civil war coming to the US in every thread here and some other parroting it too.

OonaStubbs · 21/02/2025 17:12

I have friends and relatives in America and they aren't worried at all. I don't think the average American really cares about Trump being president.

chocolatemousse3 · 21/02/2025 17:12

Going there as a tourist and give them your ££££ is another way to support that goverment.

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 21/02/2025 17:13

I won't travel to the USA whilst he or any of his ilk are in power. I don't support the regime.

The only* sad thing is the suffering of the livelihoods of people living in the USA who rely on tourist income. Many of those won't support the sitting government either (moderate Reps or Dems) and will still suffer the fallout. Utterly crap.

*"only" in relation to the drop in tourist income. There is a LOT I find utterly soul destroying about the current global political situation

Unfortunately many Americans are very insular and don’t follow national or international news.

I think you're probably right. This is one of the reasons why I won't be supporting the US economy if I can help it.

Talkinpeace · 21/02/2025 17:17

DOGE have sacked lots of Air Traffic control staff.
DOGE have sacked lots of traffic safety staff
DOGE have sacked ALL seasonal workers from the National Park (fire wardens, first aiders, parking attendants etc)
DOGE have sacked as many FEMA staff as they can

and its only February

I'd rather visit a country that values the safety of its citizens
which DOGE does not

JoanOgden · 21/02/2025 17:19

I visited the West Coast last year and it was pretty depressing - city centre full of drug addicts wandering around hopelessly and very run down. While hotels and restaurants were very expensive. So I wasn't keen to visit again soon anyway, and the political developments have made me even less so.

Even worse then. Living in a bubble.

Are you serious, I'm unsure if you're taking the piss or not?

Competely serious

Ilovelifeverymuch · 21/02/2025 17:25

RosaMoline · 21/02/2025 14:44

That’s what I’m thinking too.

No they are not heading to a civil war. The media in the UK need to chill and leave the US alone, too much coverage of the US creating a the anxiety and weird statements that they r heading to a civil war.

It's fine if you don't want to visit, but people are not running around fighting on the streets for politics.

user9876543211 · 21/02/2025 17:25

I'm American but live abroad. We travel back and forth pretty frequently to see family, in blue states, without fear or worry. I don't like gun culture, but have honestly never seen one other than on a police officer.

That said, if I was a tourist, choosing where to spend my money, I would not be choosing to the spend it in the US right now. I particularly would not be keen to spend it in Florida, whose governor I find repellent.

Disney has also been extremely craven in their dealings with Trump as they've prioritised their business interests over any kind of principles.

JorgyPorgy · 21/02/2025 17:25

Bring back the ‘Trump Baby’ blimp! That was so good! 😅

Ilovelifeverymuch · 21/02/2025 17:26

Parker231 · 21/02/2025 17:15

Unfortunately many Americans are very insular and don’t follow national or international news.

To be fair I think countries like the UK consume too much news about the US, an unhealthy amount of news about the US.

Yes it's good to get international news but balanced.

CryingAtTheDiscotheque · 21/02/2025 17:26

No, will be spending my money elsewhere

NeedthatFridayfeeling · 21/02/2025 17:26

Not worried, we're going in summer to Oregon and Washington for a road trip, can't wait

Lots of made up statements in your post 😂

Dontlletmedownbruce · 21/02/2025 17:29

I'm travelling with kids on holiday there for Easter and it didn't occur to me to not go due to political unrest. We would be extremely unlucky to be at the exact place and time of a riot, which to my mind is the biggest risk. For example the Southport riots made international news, would it be fair to say UK is too dangerous and racist based on this? I don't think so. Cities like Paris have riots quite frequently. There have been random stabbings or murders everywhere, it doesn't make daily life more dangerous unless it's a very dangerous area with ongoing problems.
