Are you wary of travelling to USA currently?

I am sure you will tell me I’m BU, but that’s fine!
I’ve been to the states numerous times - Florida (all over, not just Disney/Orlando), New York City, California (los Angeles), Massachusetts and New Orleans.
Myself and 2 adult DCs were planning to go to Orlando again this October. Primarily for Halloween and DS (28) is autistic & very fixated with all things Disney.
DD (30) and I decided not to go ahead and take DS to Disneyland Paris instead. Yes, we’ve been there before, and it doesn’t really compare to the US version (IMO) not even close, but DS won’t mind.
it’s solely down to the current POS in charge and all his minions. America seems (to me) to be on a knife edge, very volatile, and DD being LGBT is understandably unsettled too.
I am not the sort of person who usually would even give a moment’s thought to something like this, but I just have a really uneasy feeling about going there. Chances are, at age 58, I may never go again.
AIBU or would you be thinking twice at the moment about travelling there? (especially Florida which is a red state)
I detest that man SO much!

I would, but mainly about guns, and worried the same when we went in 2018. Hoping to go this October as well. I was on alert for gunmen every time we were in a petrol station or diner etc! Too much social media for me I think! I have no idea how Disney etc haven’t had a terrorist attack yet but they must have robust procedures as surely it would be a prime target.

Oh I am so offended by this. I won’t sleep tonight.

I wasn’t even talking to you tbf. Sleep or don’t sleep.

Crikeyalmighty · 21/02/2025 15:29

I love visiting certain bit of USA - both pleasure and work- but am giving it a swerve for a good while -

RosaMoline · 21/02/2025 15:23

We won’t be going into Paris city centre. Disneyland Paris is on the outskirts. I’ve been to Paris a few times and wasn’t worried (yes, I know there have been terrorist acts committed there) - I live close to London, and don’t give it a second thought when I go into the city. It’s comparable to Paris in my opinion.

The Parisiennes themselves love a good riot and demo. 😂

Not advising. We are adults and can decide for ourselves, same as you. And we don’t want to go anymore. It’s got nothing to do with that they don’t need our money, we just don’t want to go. It’s not a great country.

I could not care less where do you go or not.

pinotnow · 21/02/2025 15:32

We are booked to go in the summer as a special holiday to mark the end of the dc's A levels and GCSEs. It's their first time out of Europe and was booked before the election. We'll be in blue states on the East Coast. To be honest, I am regretting it but there's nothing I can do without wasting a lot of money and disappointing the dc so I'm trying to look on the bright side. Even flying there seems less safe now and I do wish we had stuck to Europe. 🙄

RosaMoline · 21/02/2025 15:32

As a PP said upthread, I’m worried about the right to bear arms too. Too many gun nuts on the loose out there.

I think they are headed for civil war tbh.

Yank here. That's wildly unlikely.

Try not to worry. I’d be a little more relaxed (just!) about going to a blue state. It was 10 years ago, but the nicest place I went to (in terms of inclusivity) was Massachusetts. They were so lovely, kind and welcoming to my SN son.

I don’t think anyone asked wheter you care or not. And I wasn’t about to tell you where we go either, so there is not much for you to involve yourself in.

On what grounds do you think that they are headed for civil war?

Yes, please elaborate.

RosaMoline · 21/02/2025 15:38

The last time I went to Florida was in 2008 which coincided with the elections, which were weeks away. It was Obama/McCain. How civilised and different it was.

I would never go because I don’t want to get shot. This view hasn’t changed.

I do see your POV.
However, some of the horrific and batshit things we’ve witnessed since DT became POTUS again, we would’ve not believed possible
months ago too. It was bad enough first time around. This is 1000 x worse.

We are going to California at Easter and have no plans to cancel as it is so close now.

We’ve been to the US loads of times, mainly as we are Disney nuts. It’s like a second home so I follow the politics fairly closely. I am speechless at how quickly things have gone completely crazy. Literally speechless. It was bad enough last time but this is on a whole new level and I genuinely fear the possible outcomes for the world over this. Would I be booking a holiday now? Possibly not, I think there is the potential for things to spiral completely out of control very quickly. Could I see Trump and Musk taking offence or dislike to another country and deciding to go to war? I can’t believe I’m saying this but actually I think it is in the realms of possibility. Because they’re not operating inside normal parameters, so normal rules just don’t seem to apply anymore.

Not only that, I love flying and am perfectly happy getting on a plane, but it’s hard not to raise an eyebrow at the number of accidents that have happened in a very short space of time.

Andylion · 21/02/2025 15:43

Canadian, here, I was planning on going to the states in the spring to meet up with friends. I am no longer going. No fucking way am I setting foot over the border and spending my money to support their economy. I will spend my vacation in Canada,

I wouldn't be worried about going there but I wouldn't be going there in protest of what is going on. I doubt there will be a full on civil war and if there is it won't be in October but later on.

CanadianJohn · 21/02/2025 15:45

I was thinking of taking a winter vacation, maybe Florida. However, I've decided not to spend any money in the US. Some other country can have my vacation money.

Voting with my feet, or dollars, in this case.

What makes you think that what is happening will lead to a civil war, though? That would take a very specific set of circumstances which don't look likely to occur. I'm not saying that things aren't bad in the US, but I don't think that there will be a war.

Orange messiah? Who is that? What is that talk? I do not know what you mean with that? I do not live my life by having politics to rule my world. I think some people are way too ridiculous and affecting their own mental health. May be I should have said you are a grown up and should not go if you feel that way?

Of course you know what was meant. Unless you’ve been living in a cupboard for the last ten years.

I was planning a trip to the US next year but I refuse to give it my money at the moment. I might consider it post 2028 if they come to their senses and elect someone half sensible.

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 21/02/2025 15:49

You are less likely to be stabbed randomly in the States than In Birmingham or Dublin.
