I remember Anthea Turner punting flakes at her wedding. Carol Vorderman was always quick to front a financial product. Just seen Carole Malone on my timeline oiling on about weight loss jabs.

Any others spring to mind?

Presidents Trump and Milei for their crypto bs.

in the UK jack monroe ranks pretty high for just the amount of various virtual tin shaking over the years

Ollie London. I'm trans-Korean, oh I'm a trans woman, no, a few weeks later I am an anti-trans campaigner saving the children and the identifying as a trans woman wasn't at all a grift-y stunt to make lots of money from right wing people. Oh, also I support the IDF to own the libs but because of all the other shit I'm associated with anyone watching my stuff will probably be recommended more antisemitic content by the algorithm but that's not my problem. Pathetic human being. 🙄

I've never heard of Ollie London so I had to google. Christ, what a monstrous creature. That nose job.

Echobelly · 20/02/2025 18:45

It's interesting that I now think of a grifter as something very specific - not someone who, I dunno, does lots of merchandising stuff or sells their own dodgy products, but more someone who is transparently siding with a political ideology (usually the Right because there is far, far more money floating around in that) purely to make money whether they believe in it or not, and often at the expense of a group to which they belong.

My cousin Mandy was always pointing out that all the female characters took off their big clip on earrings to answer the phone in those 1980's American soaps and then I couldn't concentrate on the plot of either Dallas or Dynasty any longer. I was distracted by the earring thing.

"Oh, here we go. Phone ringing. Watch her take her earring off now."
"Mandy!"

Overtheatlantic · 20/02/2025 18:48

Kate Middleton obviously. Followed William to university. Is always “keen” to do projects but then nothing except to say “something something early years are important.”

DalzielOrNoDalzielAndDontPascoe · 20/02/2025 18:49

Most of the candidates on The Apprentice. There's negotiating hard to strike a really strong deal; and there's just being a stinking great big grifter.

Imagine trashing and insulting a hard-working business owner's livelihood, value and hard-won reputation on TV, without any self-awareness whatsoever.

WooleyMunky · 20/02/2025 18:49

Johnson charging £150 for photo ops.
That Kate off Big Brother charging a grand for a DJ set, turning up battered, having someone else play tunes while she 'powdered her nose' for an hour.
Scargill paying his mortgage with miner's cash. A millionaire now.
Any 'celebrity' influencer.

Trump isn’t self made. His family have been wealthy for generations, initially making money by running prostitutes during the gold rush. Yes he’s made more money but there is a point where it’s hard not to even with some fairly basic investment.

Yes. Exactly my point.

ETA until his presidency he had managed to lose more than he made though.

Hotflushesandchilblains · 20/02/2025 18:52

If anyone has not seen it, I highly recommend the film 'Grifters' with Angelica Houston - its brilliant - like gritty Hustle.

I don't really think I can beat Captain Tom's daughter and I'm not quite sure if this character is a grifter exactly in the correct sense of the term but he's certainly very slippery. More slippery than a bar of slippy soap on an ice rink type slippery.

Russell Brand.

He's a born again Christian now, y'know.

Actually he's God.

Stacey Solomon. Quite how she's gone from an X Factor finalist all those years ago to now presenting multiple primetime TV shows, flogging everything from cleaning products to deodorant, and her multiple homeware ranges etc. is beyond me!

She's positioned as an interiors and home organisation guru but to me she comes across as fake, phony and just not very intelligent.

Yes on a recent episode of SYLO she said dessert spoons are something from Downton Abbey! As if they aren't what most people use most of the time!

DrudgeJedd · 20/02/2025 18:52

GLP cases spreadsheet
Hmm I'm not convinced, some of the stuff that they're claiming as wins on their spreadsheet are pretty thin gruel. Also you'd think one of those 40+ staff members would have time to update their marks donors, last updated July 2024 even though they say it will be done quarterly.
The St James Place of lawfare 😁

unsync · 20/02/2025 18:53

Trump.

SashaPicklepops · 20/02/2025 18:55

A grifter is someone who can pull the wool over people's eyes, by spouting crap that they don't believe themselves in order to make money or become favourable in someway, and often there is some sort of illegality/scam involved. So for those reasons I have to say Donald Trump, he himself is a complete scam that millions have bought into and believe. God help us all.

Fencehedge · 20/02/2025 18:55

I'm not sure if this 100% meets the brief, and sorry if I'm repeating, but does David Tennant really need to do a fucking advert for broccoli?! Surely you have enough money now Dave..

ElsaLion · 20/02/2025 18:55

@Viviennemary The blogs about her yachting days certainly made for interesting reading, before Google wiped them all.

Eh? I have always said ‘garage’ (ie rhyming with ‘Farage’). I’ve never heard it pronounced ‘garridge’.

Visit Scotland! It's lovely up here.

MostlyHappyMummy · 20/02/2025 18:58

Royal family - but fair play to them. Nobody seems to mind - bizarre but there you go

Yes and pretending she’s on budget holidays all the time that everyone with a large family could afford if they just did a little shopping around and more DIY when in fact her holidays are luxury and gifted

MyGreyViewer · 20/02/2025 19:00

The 2 Markles with all their money and contacts why the heck can’t they launch a business. Their latest venture is potentially dogged by their business name’As Ever’ and their logo is similar to an area in Mallorca As Spotify said Grifters!

FroddyLoop · 20/02/2025 19:01

Pretty much agree with all - Trump, Jack Monroe, Meghan Markle & all the Royals, Michelle Mone, Captain Tom’s family…urgh.

I’d add Ngozi Fulani who runs the ‘charity’ Sista Space. She got a lot of publicity because someone was racist to her. Unfortunately for her she drew a bit too much attention to herself when seeking publicity afterwards and a few people investigated her grifting ways. No cumuppence that I’ve seen yet. If you don’t know her please read the thread by JustPikachoo on X about Sista Space.

MayaPinion · 20/02/2025 19:02

Farage is the obvious one. Johnson - being a sneaky, bullying, lying, expeditious, narcissistic, wee fucker does not mean he’s intelligent.

itsjustbiology · 20/02/2025 19:03

Who was that prat who shacked up with Vanessa who only ever had one song and due to her everytime she appeared anywhere his song got played? Moron both of them..Ben something the one hit wonder? He made a career out of well fucked if I know!!

Good Law Project/Jolyon Maugham. They have about 40 staff and very expensive offices in Covent Garden but all they seem to do is write complaint letters and lose court cases.
Do the soft touches who pay for it all by monthly direct debit think they're funding some brave resistance movement?

Someone said it first.

I suppose that was inevitable!

'The 2 Markles' 😂, I might need to use that in future!
