Some people on this thread seem to be confused about what a grifter is. It's not just someone who has made money from doing very little.

Dictionary definition: person who engaged in petty or small scale swindling.

I would say Captian Tom's daughter's swindling was not small scale!

I'm not sure some of these are grifters... think of a grifter as someone who makes money by identifying a demographic and selling/telling them what they want to hear. Like the guru/"life coach" types. They don't actually believe what they're saying, they just know that people will pay to hear it. I guess cult leaders would be an extreme example.

the general public, they want cheap products but then complain when shops on the high street go bankrupt while they are buying from ebay, amazon etc
