Need a OTT message for a goodbye card to nasty colleague.

Posting here for traffic.

For the last 4 years, I have worked with an older male colleague who made my working life hell. Long story short, he would gaslight me, take credit for my work and ideas and put me down at any given opportunity which made him look good to others. He is idolised in our department by some, including our line manager, who at the time, would play down my concerns, even with written evidence and screenshots.

Anyway, he has just announced he is retiring and a card is being sent round the team to sign.

I know if I don't sign it, it will look like he has got to me (which he has), but I don't want to give him the satisfaction of that, so I thought of writing something over the top, that to anyone else reading it when signing it, won't see I'm being sarcastic and already counting down the hours until he goes!

Yes this is probably petty, but I know mumsnet is great for things like this to help me with.

To save any trouble that might happen I do think it would be best just to put Goodbye from and add your name .It might be boring but could save you facing problems..

SwanOfThoseThings · 20/02/2025 17:59

When this happened to me, I just wrote "Bye!" and signed my name, which I hope told its own story amongst the usual 'best wishes' and 'we'll miss you' guff.

WillIEverBeOk · 20/02/2025 18:00

Why does it need to be OTT? You are letting him win by being effusive.

I'd simply write "good luck".
You can mean that both ways. And your colleagues will read it in the good way. So you haven't put yourself out or let him win.

I once signed a leaving card very formally rather than with just my first name. So it was 'Best wishes, F Wonder' or something similar. I liked this person. It was a complete mistake, like a muscle memory thing, because I was used to signing work stuff - purchase orders, letters and the like - and so my brain went into work mode. A few people commented on it and wondered if there was something behind it and I had to admit it was a mistake and that I felt like a right bloody dick.

So, maybe signing it like this might be an idea, but in your case deliberately!

or the wife of a famous man, had a Christmas card from his office, signed,
best wishes, Alan Sugar.

Angelchick1971 · 20/02/2025 18:05

I've thought you might like to sign this on my behalf.....so you can take the credit as usual.....(then don't sign it lol 😆)

PebbleDashAtOne · 20/02/2025 18:08

Condolences to your wife and family.

Bogartysmack79 · 20/02/2025 18:11

I'd write messy, large and smudge or even in a pink glitter pen ! Maybe just bye or Tara. If you could push to gifting a T.w.a.t Mug/pen or badge..anonymously too. ⭐️

MillieMinx · 20/02/2025 18:12

Bye!

KateM91 · 20/02/2025 18:12

Bye Felicia 😂

Ohnobackagain · 20/02/2025 18:15

@WorkRelatedName probably don’t sign - you can pretend when the envelope comes round, just look, put it back, pass it on or write ‘All the best’ (and don’t contribute to the gift). Otherwise, put “hope the Mrs is looking forward to your retirement as much as we you are” as though it was a genuine mistake and you always meant to write ‘you’ (even a tiny ‘oops’ underneath) 😬😬😬

Cara707 · 20/02/2025 18:16

I like the 'Happy Birthday + initials' or 'Condolences + initials' option!

LadeedahYadaYada · 20/02/2025 18:17

rise above it - wish him well in the card and cartwheel out the office on his last day

Arrggghhhhhh · 20/02/2025 18:17

I hope you don’t sign it, he doesn’t deserve 1 second of your energy.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 20/02/2025 18:18

Please don't do anything. Don't sign the card. If asked simply say you don't care to. That says it all.

Notjustabrunette · 20/02/2025 18:20

Honestly, I just wouldn’t sign it. Someone was leaving from my department, who I didn’t like and didn’t want to sign the card, when it was bought around to me I just said I’ll pass on that one.

CuteEasterBunny · 20/02/2025 18:21

Sigh your name and leave it at that. You’ll look unbothered.

AcquadiP · 20/02/2025 18:22

Happy 70th birthday, Norman

WorkRelatedName · 20/02/2025 18:23

I've had a good laugh with all these responses! Thank you for taking the time!

I'm not going to sign the card :)
