Dh drank a whole bottle of whiskey

Seriously a whole bottle of Jameson.
Now dh is a good bloke, works his ass off in his own company, hands on dad, looks after us the best he can. He's got SADS, does every winter. He's upped his sertraline as recommended so waiting for that to take effect.
I took the little ones to bed last night and slept all night with them, he drank a whole bottle of whiskey. He didn't cause any trouble or anything you might expect from someone drinking that amount, wasn't sick or anything but couldn't get into bed as his head was spinning so slept downstairs. I've come down this morning and the whole bottle is gone.
Aibu or will this not fuck his liver ?! He's currently in bed dying, has work in a bit. Can't help but feel a little smug and so fucking grateful I don't feel how he does !!

From what I've read before a bottle of whisky is a fatal dose unless you're used to it, so already an alcoholic.

Seriously, I'd call NHS direct now.

The liver heals itself. He can ask for bloods from his GP, but I've known heavy drinkers who drink similar and whose liver function went quite quickly back to normal. My Dad was in the Merchant Navy and they'd binge drink between ships.

Yeah but it could also kill someone who isn’t a heavy drinker. The liver obviously cannot always heal itself

howyoufeeling · 20/02/2025 08:45

See my update about feeling smug please !

He is a big bloke, over 6ft and 17 stone. So I'm not majorly concerned and as I said whiskey is his tipple usually so not like he has no tolerance.
I'm more concerned for his mental health atm.

He isn't a heavy drinker, but has drank whiskey for years

And yes it was a brand new bottle so it was full

3luckystars · 20/02/2025 08:46

Well I’d be more concerned that it don’t kill him stone dead. He must be drinking an awful lot before last night?

Endofyear · 20/02/2025 08:46

Yes that is dangerous - people can die of alcohol poisoning! Also, mixing alcohol with antidepressants can suppress the respiratory system and cause you to lose consciousness and stop breathing. I'd say he's been lucky this time but it's really not a good idea.

This is probably true. But then some people end up needing liver transplants don't they so there must be a limit on how much a liver can heal itself. I'm no expert though but suggest a chat with a GP op who will know more. I think you need to sit him down and make sure he realises how serious and disturbing this is.

What size bottle?

RabbitsRock · 20/02/2025 08:47

EasternStandard it was Blushingm’s DM who drank the gin.

@Newbie8918 700ml

I think we can safely say he will be put off after this !!

DW has a drink problem - particularly with spirits. If we have any, they have to be hidden from her or they just vanish - half a bottle to a bottle at a time.

Notwithstanding that, she's just had a full blood panel and apparently still has normal liver function.

Unfortunately, this has just given her greater licence to consume...

RabbitsRock · 20/02/2025 08:50

Blushingm I’m with pp’s - how on earth did your DM survive all that?! Apart from anything else, it’s the sheer amount of liquid!

Yes, I once had a glass of red when on anti depressants and blacked out twice.

Ok. If he’s a regular drinker, not ideal but 700ml is better than a litre or bigger!

Im with you, I’d be more concerned about his mental health right now!

Rumors1 · 20/02/2025 08:53

My dad is tiny, 5ft 2 and 7.5 stone and drank 1/2 bottle of whiskey plus 1/2 bottle of wine every night for years. Only slowing down now as he is very ill. He has no liver damage.

edited to add he also takes Tylex, solpadeine and Panadol daily!

Highlighta · 20/02/2025 08:53

I dated someone who drank way too much, and whiskey was his choice.

He drank a whole bottle on more than one occasion when I was with him (not any more thank goodness). One night out he got carried away and when I looked at the bill the next morning, he had had 32 DOUBLE shots of JW Black.

He always had milk thistle to hand, so I suppose this is something you could look into for your dh to take today?

That and sports drinks as he will no doubt be suffering with dehydration.

Shit, whiskey is about 40% too. I hope he is ok. On a work night too. He’s ticking a lot of boxes suggesting this is a problem.

I know how hard it is! My sister is an alcoholic, she doesn't drink spirits but cider.

nitrofueled · 20/02/2025 08:57

That is a lot of very strong alcohol in one session. Certainly not very good for his liver. Is there any more alcohol in the house? If so, perhaps try and put it elsewhere out of sight. And yep, take his car keys. He will 100% be over the limit for the rest of the day and maybe still tomorrow morning.

Fuuuuuckit · 20/02/2025 08:57

Any sort of drinking (but especially at that level) is going to affect his mood long term - SAD will be increased as alcohol is a depressive.

He needs a trip to the gp to sort out his depression and a swift kick up the arse from you to rejoin his family life

All depends on what position you want to take op. In my case my ex refused to engage with the GP and instead self medicated on red wine. He would finish off 3 wine boxes (12 bottles) over a weekend and when I had to ask him to stop in case I needed a lift to hospital at 9 months pregnant that was my straw that broke the camel's back.

Blushingm · 20/02/2025 08:58

@femfemlicious - no, boxes. 12 bottles as each box would hold 4 bottles (the cardboard ones with the tap). She would start in the morning and drink continuously all day

Ghosttofu99 · 20/02/2025 08:59

Alcohol is to be avoided with Sertraline because mixing the two can actually make depression worse. He is creating a vicious cycle.

DeepFatFried · 20/02/2025 08:59

Ponoka7 · 20/02/2025 08:39

All he needs to do is keep hydrated and alcohol free, ideally for a month, plenty of protein, fruit and veg. I finish off a bottle of Baileys. I used to go for my over 55 check in January. They've had to move it to March because you could tell in my bloods that I'd drank my body weight (plus the bus and other passengers weight) in Aldi's Baileys. Two months later, I'm fine. You'll get ridiculous answers on here, but, although it needs to be discussed, there'll be do lasting damage.

Baileys is 17’ proof. Jamiesons is 40’.

Totally different.
