How Can The World Stand By While Trump Sucks Up To Putin?

Nolieinforme · 19/02/2025 20:28

OK, so this probably isn't an AIBU, but I'm speechless that Trump is behaving like a bully and seems to be getting away with it.

He just lies. "Zelensky is a dictator" "Ukraine started the war" "Putin has done nothing wrong" etc, etc. I can hardly believe what's been said on the news today.

Why are the rest of the world letting this happen? If America want's to align themselves with Russia, then we should be returning the Chagos Islands without the huge sum of money promised, closing all the US airbases in the UK, closing the US embassy, and expelling their diplomats, etc, etc.

Trump is a madman and what is going to happen if no-one stands up to him? If this was anyone else they just wouldn't get away with it.

I strongly doubt, also, that the sick and disabled are greedily eating up our defence spending. What a dire and inhunmane conclusion to come to, unless you have had it piped into your ears via the press to such an extent that an original thought left out the back door years ago..

I don’t ‘do’ the Murdoch press, I primarily read the I, Guardian, BBC etc

I don’t hold the opinion I do because I’m ideological about benefits and disagree with them as a principle. It’s because at present they have climbed to a completely unsustainable level, so much so that disability benefits alone (not UC, not pensions, not pension credit) outstrip what we spend on the military. If we were spending that much on anything else - transport, housing, the police, education - I would be saying the same thing. We can no longer afford to be an economy that exists to support only the unemployed, disabled or elderly (and I say this as a disabled woman - with something like epilepsy although I don’t want to be too specific). We have other dire needs that require urgent funding and we can’t simply continue to raise the tax burden as it is very high as it is.

I feel like valid criticism of welfare or health/social care spending has become the new criticism of immigration, in that posters instantly rush to call you a bigot to shut down very legitimate and fact-based concerns.

Fact is America has ghosted us, we have some pretty scary enemies and no proper allies any more, so we funnel money into benefits and neglect the military at our own peril.

"In 1864 Abraham Lincoln held elections during the Civil War even though he thought he'd lose. If the US could do it 161 years ago over vast territory without modern communication, Ukraine can do it today in a much smaller area."

Well the UK didn't during WW2, which was longer than the Ukrainian war, did it? Nobody went round accusing Churchill of being a dictator did they?

Edited

Churchill should have held elections. So should Zelensky. Why is this difficult?

headstone · 20/02/2025 19:18

Trump is quite a big old fella though, so there’s a good chance he might have a heart attack . Maybe the next POTUS will be more like Obama.

How do you run a fair campaign, allow voting, when there are missiles raining down on you?
How would the millions on the front line get a vote?

The resources are huge, a country at war cannot afford this.

You say that like it's a threat to Americans. We Yanks are happy to leave your bases. Delirious, because it means that Europe is finally taking responsibility for its own security. Or not. Whatever. Not our circus and should never have been our circus.

That's why the VP is on his way back to Europe in the next few days--to explain that we're leaving. It won't be a complete withdrawal but it will be the vast majority.

80 years after the end of WWII it's high time for the US to leave NATO to its own devices. Complete withdrawal is already being discussed by both the Trump admin and Congress.

The one thing I agree on is that we should be spending more on defense. (With the caveat that much of the US spend is useless and could be taken out by long range missiles nowadays, and much of the money spent boosted their economy and /or was getting rid of older equipment etc)

It's blatantly obvious, not just from this poster, but from the urangutang's government that they don't want allies in trade, defense or anything. Backing off respectively would be preferable but that doesn't go with the arrogant attitude, all respect has gone
So we need to walk/ run away, regroup with genuine allies and count US as an enemy. Pity, I have enjoyed holidays there.
But they don't see how it will all implode. Their problem

Your armed forces aren't that high quality, and without American backup they're toast.

Yeah America has done so very well in its wars hasn't it

It's not the US military that has failed, it is the US politicians. But that has ended now.

The US doesn't need allies. Allies to us are a burden, not a help. As soon as we get our iron dome up and working, which Trump plans to do in the next few years, we plan to drop our defense spending hugely and with it our tax burden.

Oh dear. We have relatives in the States who are cringing at this kind of grandiose delusion. Stop embarrassing your country.

The Missile Defense Agency has been working on the missile problem for decades. We already have NORAD, just need to complete the dome. I suggest Europe get together and do the same.

I don’t agree Blossomtoes, USA isnt a threat to its allies, Putin is imo only threat to the former Soviet Union , he won’t attack a NATO country. So I’m not worried for the UK tbh, although I do sympathise with the countries that will be affected but not enough to go to war with Russia.

Trump is a threat to the USA itself (inciting insurrection doesn't exactly scream a rational or safe leader to me). In addition, his global ignorance, failure to respect the rule of law, outrageous egomanical behaviour and kowtowing to the likes of Putin makes him the single biggest threat to the Allies other than Putin himself. In fact he's worse, because I don't believe Putin is actually crazy.

As to your belief Putin won't attack a NATO country...do you actually know which countries are NATO members? Because several countries that, within living history, were also invaded and illegally annexed by Russia into the former USSR are now NATO members. He has always wanted us back and threats, and physical and cyber attacks have been happening regularly for years. It is a very tenuous thread stopping Putin invading them again. (Particularly now the West has shown how truly weak it is in response to his war in Ukraine.) And if Ukraine falls, it will NOT just be Ukraine. It will be Poland, the Baltics, the Nordics. And don't forget Putin's charming allies, like North Korea and Saudi Arabia, who may also wish to wage their own wars (trade or otherwise) in future which, being such a good friend, he would doubtless support. Can you not see the long-term domino effect of Putin winning in Ukraine? Maybe Putin's land grab would stop with half of Europe, but what will the impact on trade, the global economy and natural resources be? Can you see how THAT will impact the UK?

How many young people have Ukraine lost? How many mothers have lost their Russian conscript sons?

It's all awful but still not something I want to see. Do you have the relevant age sons @FireandRain23?

No, I have a relevant age daughter in the US whom I’m terrified about. There were rumours of conscription before both Gulf wars. It didn’t happen. It’s not going to happen. This is not Russia.

I think he's calling Zelensky a dictator because Zelensky has cancelled elections, which is the type of things dictators tend to do.

He hasn't cancelled them, he's followed the Ukrainian Constitution and has postponed them, during a period of martial law. All Ukrainian parties have agreed that this is the correct course of action.

Several polls-not all- are showing that his popularity has fallen, so a cynical person might not marvel at the fact that the elections are cancelled.

No, that's incorrect and more Trumpite lies. He's currently at 57% approval, 5% higher than last year, in fact. Most of the population also understand and agree with the enytirely legal, constitutionally mandated election suspension.

My OH is from a former Soviet Republic and we are hosting our third Ukrainian family.

The drop in approval from the early part of the war is because Ukraine is still grinding away, is still being bombed and high casualty rates.

EasternStandard · 20/02/2025 20:13

Ukraine was given assurances that its borders would be protected by US, U.K. and Russia, when it gave up its nuclear weapons - Russia obviously ignored this! - but this surely is a good reason for the US to be involved, not just as (former) allies of Europe.
