How Can The World Stand By While Trump Sucks Up To Putin?

Nolieinforme · 19/02/2025 20:28

OK, so this probably isn't an AIBU, but I'm speechless that Trump is behaving like a bully and seems to be getting away with it.

He just lies. "Zelensky is a dictator" "Ukraine started the war" "Putin has done nothing wrong" etc, etc. I can hardly believe what's been said on the news today.

Why are the rest of the world letting this happen? If America want's to align themselves with Russia, then we should be returning the Chagos Islands without the huge sum of money promised, closing all the US airbases in the UK, closing the US embassy, and expelling their diplomats, etc, etc.

Trump is a madman and what is going to happen if no-one stands up to him? If this was anyone else they just wouldn't get away with it.

The world has sat back and watched while countless thousands of innocent people have been killed and injured in Gaza, and 90% of buildings have been damaged, and have done nothing, so I don't know why anyone would be surprised by what Trump is doing now - the US think they have the right to do exactly what they want, when they want. But Trump is clearly very seriously unhinged and I think he's becoming increasingly dangerous.

custardpyjamas · 20/02/2025 13:54

I think in the long term the UK relationship with the US will change after the way Trump is acting, but we are quite heavily dependent on and aligned with the US with trade, militarily and international commitments, it would be very bad for the UK to suddenly fall out completely with the US. But it will never be the same relationship and I'm sure not only the UK but many other countries will be moving away from the US (politically and in trading, etc) as fast as possible without causing too many problems at home. The US may be a big fish, but there are lots of smaller fish out there.

Agreed.
I have seen the tide turn massively on social media in the last month or two. I think this is what propaganda looks like in the 21st century and we have no real defence.

I don't think tide has turned so much as SM is being flooded to look like it has.
The general responses from people who aren't just posting propaganda are similar to before. It's just the people who are posting the other way are doing a lot.

It would be interesting if mnhq could publish %ages from different countries and how it's changed over the last 5 years.

TiredCatLady · 20/02/2025 14:01

All feels a bit 1938 Czechoslovakia…

I’m sure Trump is eyeing up a Crimean Riviera development…

ExpensiveBiscuits · 20/02/2025 14:01

In the end, every war has to end with a peace treaty, a negotiation, unless one side wins outright.

Ukraine has had a lot of money from Europe and the USA and that money can't keep going on for ever. It just can't because many countries can't afford to keep doing so.

Trump may be the only one who can begin to broker some sort of deal. Clearly, Russia and Ukraine both need to be involved.

.It is all very well to trot around the world, meeting leaders, demanding money from what seems a never ending source but peace is always better. This is a chance, an opening salvo, to bring it to an end. It's a long way from perfect but it's a start.

Anyway, the UK can't afford to give more and is everyone happy with Sir Keir saying he is willing to put boots on the ground? What boots? How many? If it drags on will people be happy for conscription to be introduced. He can't supply soldiers long term without conscription.

Of course, he may just have said this because he got carried away dressing up in camouflage. .Who knows, He might have costed it all out and have a clear plan.

I suppose if the rest of the world is willing to keep paying and willing to put conscripted soldiers on the ground-albeit only the UK has said this, then that's what will happen.

The majority will rule-as it should but at some point, maybe years down the line, a table will be brought in and people will have to sit around it.

trainermush · 20/02/2025 14:01

@Andwhoisasking so how many is too many on the sick? Poverty and socioeconomic factors impact health so naturally sickness grows.

trainermush · 20/02/2025 14:03

We don’t though that’s the problem. We have a majority of net takers. Not enough people pay enough tax.

@Andwhoisasking we have more old people so of course an increase in more net takers. A high proportion of net takers is the norm, unless you can link some data that suggests otherwise?

It’s not the elderly driving it. We now spend more on non-pension benefits than pensions. Look up the increase in benefits claims, it’s terrifying

Tell me you don't realise how over-reliant we are on the US without telling me you don't know how over-reliant we are on the US.

Embassy wise. Take a trip down to London and have a look daily on how long the line is for the Embassy.... that's just for Non-immigrant visas. Immigrant visas get let in via the front. Closing an embassy will impact UK citizens more than the US, Eg those attending for marriage based green cards have likely been separated from their spouse for the best part of 21-22 months. Closing and stopping that would increase demand on UK immigration (UK marriage visas can be obtained in 30 working days if premium processing is selected.

Closing US airbases in the UK? Will do more damage to the UK.
Look deeper into our military:
. P8 Poseidon - Deal with the US
. Reaper/Protector - US
. F-35 Program - US
. RJ - US
. Sentinel - Retired and sold to the US Army who intend to update and make it serviceable
. E3D Sentry - Retired before E7 is FOC.
Close the US airbases and they'd cut support to the projects we have with them. Our military would pretty much cease to operate effectively.

Yes, I agree with you. Sorry perhaps I used the wrong metaphor.

I’m afraid use of VPN probably makes it difficult to track. There are probably whole workforces that devote themselves to influencing the online narrative and trying to create political and social division, make us question our values and weaken us as a nation.

I would love to know whether our security forces have any defence strategy, but I don’t know how it could work without seriously inhibiting our freedoms.

I think he's calling Zelensky a dictator because Zelensky has cancelled elections, which is the type of things dictators tend to do.

Several polls-not all- are showing that his popularity has fallen, so a cynical person might not marvel at the fact that the elections are cancelled.

The elections were cancelled because they are at war.

Ritzybitzy · 20/02/2025 14:10

Because amongst the madness he does things that are sensible. Lia what’s his name for starters.

That is the issue. There is no one sensible anymore. Just extreme versions with no one side getting it remotely right anymore.

Well yes, the fact that NHS waiting lists are long so people can't be got better and back to work is not great at all.
Not obvious that deciding such people should starve is a particularly sensible way to solve that one.

BigDecisionWorthIt · 20/02/2025 14:11

Every branch of the military has a retention issue currently.
Successive government's (con and lab) have cut total numbers. All branches are currently losing personnel at a quicker rate than they can recruit them.

trainermush · 20/02/2025 14:11

You think an increasingly ageing population has no economical impact? 🤦🏻‍♀️ In the 60s we had 5 pensioners to 1 worker, now it's 3:1 & not far off 2:1.

We now spend more on non-pension benefits than pensions.

No we don't...

"Around 55% of social security expenditure goes to pensioners; in 2024-25 we will spend £165.9 billion on benefits for pensioners in GB. This includes spending on the State Pension which is forecast to be £137.5 billion in 2024 to 2025."

His popularity is greater than Trump’s. And no nation has ever held elections while it’s at war.

It’s not even linked to NHS waiting lists. The Lords review found no evidence between waiting lists and the number of claims rising.

Horriblevirusagain · 20/02/2025 14:12

Trump is amazing. The changes he is making is all for the American people. Sadly we are stuck With Two Tier Starmer. Vile man who hates the British people including farmers and the elderly. Sends all our taxes overseas and does nothing for the homeless or Farmers or people struggling on low wages. Hopefully Reform will sort out this shower of shit!! We can learn a lot from Trump especially as he is giving back taxes that were fraudulently claimed to his people. And kicking out the violent illegals what is there to hate!!

AquaPeer · 20/02/2025 14:13

“Stand by and let him get away with it”

geopolitics isn’t like school where you get told off by the headteacher if you don’t follow the rules. Who do you think should be able to stop trump doing whatever he wants and talking to whomever he wants?!?

There is plenty out there. Whilst you’re at it, go and have a look at the tax rates and allowances in other countries. From low earners up. It’s not my job to educate you.

The country was invaded, what do you expect?

nitrofueled · 20/02/2025 14:14

I'll withhold my opinion until the deal is finalised. At the moment it's just hearsay and tit for tat by politicians trying to look big on the world stage. My overriding feeling at the moment is this war has been in stalemate for well over a year now and it's time to reach peace to stop the bloodshed, displacement, misery and volatile energy rates.

trainermush · 20/02/2025 14:15

"There are now 4.2 million working-age individuals (10.2%) receiving at least one health-related benefit, compared with 3.2 million (7.9%) in 2019"

The poster I replied to mentioned "on the sick". Our economy as I already said never recovered from 08, whilst an extra 1million on the sick isn't a positive it's not the reason we are fucked.

One thing that I think is new is the number of apparently "pro-Trump" posters that appeared on here in recent weeks.
And suddenly our local FB page seems to have lots of pro-Trump/Putin posts from anonymous people, as does one of the FB interest groups I'm in

It does look like a concerted effort to change opinion via social media.

The checklist seems to be

Elections
Banning Christianity
Why don't you go to the front.

And even when these faux innocent questions are answered, they keep on going.
