How Can The World Stand By While Trump Sucks Up To Putin?

Nolieinforme · 19/02/2025 20:28

OK, so this probably isn't an AIBU, but I'm speechless that Trump is behaving like a bully and seems to be getting away with it.

He just lies. "Zelensky is a dictator" "Ukraine started the war" "Putin has done nothing wrong" etc, etc. I can hardly believe what's been said on the news today.

Why are the rest of the world letting this happen? If America want's to align themselves with Russia, then we should be returning the Chagos Islands without the huge sum of money promised, closing all the US airbases in the UK, closing the US embassy, and expelling their diplomats, etc, etc.

Trump is a madman and what is going to happen if no-one stands up to him? If this was anyone else they just wouldn't get away with it.

only young people can fight.

Well if we are talking the brutal realities many are nothing more than cannon fodder so send the older people first?

headstone · 20/02/2025 18:13

I don’t agree Blossomtoes, USA isnt a threat to its allies, Putin is imo only threat to the former Soviet Union , he won’t attack a NATO country. So I’m not worried for the UK tbh, although I do sympathise with the countries that will be affected but not enough to go to war with Russia.

The only ally the US will have at this rate is Russia. Putin will attack any country he fancies if he’s emboldened by Trump’s support. You do remember that the reason we entered war in Europe last time was because Poland was invaded? And you do know which country borders Poland?

Newbutoldfather · 20/02/2025 18:12

@SernieBanders ,

‘Never” is a shortsighted term. It could happen. Very quickly.’

So, I reiterate, who are we going to be using conscripts to fight, and where?

Any NATO country in Europe?

trainermush · 20/02/2025 18:16

we have low corruption high employment high literacy low infant mortality and it’s better than it ever, EVER has been.

Nope, I definitely had it easier than today's young.

We’re not Russia. Our armed forces are tiny but high quality. These are not trenches.

No you didn’t.

trainermush · 20/02/2025 18:18

We aren't talking about the current armed forces but the young who may be conscripted.
How will they be highly trained so quickly?

Those who are keen?

Some ready to fight posters

trainermush · 20/02/2025 18:19

@SernieBanders yes I did. Not perfect in anyway but in terms of what matters to me I did.

trainermush · 20/02/2025 18:19

@EasternStandard 😆😆 something tells me they are super eager for others to do their duty but not so much themselves.

His popularity is greater than Trump’s. And no nation has ever held elections while it’s at war.

In 1864 Abraham Lincoln held elections during the Civil War even though he thought he'd lose. If the US could do it 161 years ago over vast territory without modern communication, Ukraine can do it today in a much smaller area.

Walkden · 20/02/2025 18:20

"How close does Putin need to get to your front door before you ARE prepared to take a stand ?"

Easy to tell people to stand when it is not you or yours that will be on the firing line.

Young people amay resent a country that calls them snowflakes, unable to put a roof over their head or get a decent pay rise have older generation tell them they owe them a debt to fight for the country.

How many posters on here would be willing to pay an increase in taxes to fund a war effort? / Increased aid. I bet reform would surge in the poles at the very mention of the idea.

Anyone who talks about signing up other people's children

Fighting talk. Easy to do online

Well the UK didn't during WW2, which was longer than the Ukrainian war, did it? Nobody went round accusing Churchill of being a dictator did they?

It’s not in Russia’s interests to engage NATO in a traditional armed conflict, and it’s highly unlikely to happen.

Russia has been engaging in war against the west for years, and what we are seeing is the west scrambling, trying to mount a defensive whist being on the backfoot. Russia’s military is not better than the combined military of NATO countries, but what Russia is better at is infiltration, sabotage, and disinformation campaigns, all intended to sow dissent from within a country or organization. Why would they engage in armed conflict with NATO when they can break it up from within?

Edited

Exactly. It’s disingenuous to compare a civil war with an invaded country.

Futb · 20/02/2025 18:26

Andwhoisasking · 20/02/2025 18:12

Hardly. How about calm down and try reading again. It’s fact. Our welfare budget is higher than our defence. That’s going to be a huge problem now America have taken their ball home.

If you don’t have issue with it, why bring it up in relation to spending and compare it to other counties? It might be true but what of it? Do you think the bill should be less?

AquaPeer · 20/02/2025 18:27

trainermush · 20/02/2025 18:13

that's true @AquaPeer but we will still need to fund it.

We do have to fund it and that is a really serious complex question. The unpicking of that question is not helped at all by some drama lllama “won’t someone think of the children” fake news about conscription

trainermush · 20/02/2025 18:27

I started a thread asking this because I would pay more. I would do anything to protect my dc like most.

trainermush · 20/02/2025 18:28

Tbf I have heard it on the radio this afternoon, it's always quite a heated debate I guess

LifeExperience · 20/02/2025 18:30

OneAmberFinch · 20/02/2025 15:22

Exactly, if you're worried about the rise of expansionist foreign powers, you should want us to have a well-oiled military!

FYI to previous posters, I'm not paid by anyone. If you're seeing that opinions on Ukraine have shifted it's because it's become obvious over the past months/years that the conflict is in stalemate. People may have had different views at the start of the war.

It isn't a stalemate. Ukraine is losing. Ask yourself why that "democracy," Ukraine, doesn't allow reporters to embed with troops and report on what's really going on at the front. Instead we get government-issued reports that are completely unverified, and the compliant Western media runs with them. Google Gonzalo Lira if you want to know what Zelensky does to reporters who try to tell the truth. His death is what turned the tide against Ukraine in the estimation of the American public.

The US IC knows the truth. Ukraine is losing. Without vast amounts of US $$$ and European boots on the ground, Ukraine can't win. And the US money is going away.

EasternStandard · 20/02/2025 18:31

won’t someone think of the children

Blimey this again I thought it had died with covid over

I don't mind suggesting the young should not be expected to fight

You seem to be under the impression we or indeed young people would have any choice?

what gives you that idea exactly?

Yes because it’s unsustainable. We’ve dropped the ball hugely. That does not equate to having it in for the disabled. I’d actually rather the genuinely disabled got far more. There is no way our disability figures are sustainable on top of needing to increase defence education, etc. The government are already floating ideas in the press that the welfare budget cuts will be going to defence.
