How Can The World Stand By While Trump Sucks Up To Putin?

Nolieinforme · 19/02/2025 20:28

OK, so this probably isn't an AIBU, but I'm speechless that Trump is behaving like a bully and seems to be getting away with it.

He just lies. "Zelensky is a dictator" "Ukraine started the war" "Putin has done nothing wrong" etc, etc. I can hardly believe what's been said on the news today.

Why are the rest of the world letting this happen? If America want's to align themselves with Russia, then we should be returning the Chagos Islands without the huge sum of money promised, closing all the US airbases in the UK, closing the US embassy, and expelling their diplomats, etc, etc.

Trump is a madman and what is going to happen if no-one stands up to him? If this was anyone else they just wouldn't get away with it.

100% this. Unfortunately the world right now is not the place for lofty ideals and falling on your sword for the sake of principle. The only people in the UK Trump admires are the Royals, I feel now is their moment to step up and do some urgent schmoozing so we get a good tariff deal and soften Trump toward our point of view a little. The British public have been woefully self defeating with their pro-Gaza, anti-West, anti-American sentiments because they thought it was a luxury protected from the cold light of day by our military. I fear we are in for a shock as to what would happen to us without American allegiance and a proper military.

Trump has proposed a deal with the UK--reciprocal tariffs. US tariffs against UK products will be exactly as much as the tariffs that the UK imposes on US products. Sounds fair to me.

Oh cool, so having trolls on the thread is fine, but saying there are trolls on the thread is a big NO NO.

I'm out until MN so some actual fucking moderating. If that gets me banned so be it.

won’t someone think of the children

Blimey this again I thought it had died with covid over

I don't mind suggesting the young should not be expected to fight

They’re not though… that’s the point

He is completely wrong, he said Ukraine attacked Russia!! He also carried on with total garbage about Ukraine, US aid, gave away all of the 'Wests negotiating levers..... its as if Trump is a deep sleeper Kremlin mole....

The US gains a great deal from Europe, not least in trade, military bases, intelligence sharing, culture... its not a one way street.

If we cannot rely on the Yanks, then quite honestly, what is the point in allowing them access to our territory? why?

Yes agree with your last paragraph, we in Europe have relied on NATO's art 5, thinking it was written in stone, Trump has shown its written on loo roll.

You say that like it's a threat to Americans. We Yanks are happy to leave your bases. Delirious, because it means that Europe is finally taking responsibility for its own security. Or not. Whatever. Not our circus and should never have been our circus.

That's why the VP is on his way back to Europe in the next few days--to explain that we're leaving. It won't be a complete withdrawal but it will be the vast majority.

80 years after the end of WWII it's high time for the US to leave NATO to its own devices. Complete withdrawal is already being discussed by both the Trump admin and Congress.

As for Putin invading Poland, Wasn’t there an incident at the beginning of this war when a missile entered Poland by accident and everyone including Putin were crapping themselves that it was Russian, I think it turned out to be Ukrainian didn’t it , but this incident showed there was no interest in attacking Poland.

Will you believe the BBC? The US is doing reciprocal tariffs with the UK and including, rightly, your VAT in the calculation.

Not if its information is a report on a promise from Trump. He changes his mind more often than his underwear.

Husband just saying to our DS (22) to prepare for conscription, is this how our military is going to be boosted?

Edited

Do you know that every American man must register for conscription within 30 days of his 18th birthday? It's federal law. If it was good enough for my son to have to register to go fight for Europe if he was called, it's good enough for your son, too. That's the reality of living in a dangerous world.

As a Brit I do understand your way of thinking.

The issue with the British public is over the last 30 or so years, they’ve adopted a ‘somebody else can do it’ mentality - they don’t feel any individual responsibility at all, they have a full belief that they should be entitled to X or Y but you can’t ask them to contribute in return as it somehow violates their human rights. I’ve seen light voluntary work in return for benefits (in able bodied people) described as ‘forced labour’ on here, I’ve seen people suggesting they ‘save the state a fortune’ by looking after their own children and relatives, I’ve seen posters suggest that it’s perfectly acceptable to claim benefits rather than work if working makes the school drop off stressful. They seem to think their mere existence is doing the world a favour, and that of the state isn’t pandering to their every whim then it’s oppressing them.

They will now make this an issue of ‘selfish Americans’ because they will come up with some reason why as usual they’re incapable of contributing and instead need everyone else to do it for them.

Trump isn’t unreasonable in saying USA has carried Europe in many ways for far too long, but he’s been very undiplomatic in how he goes about it.

I also think calling Americans ‘Yanks’ is rude and pejorative and tbh with that sneering attitude I’m not surprised they’re ghosting us

This. It’s like asking why nobody stands up to Tyson Fury in a bar - there is nobody with the strength or power to reasonably take him on and make him back down.

Trump has been elected on a promise of putting America first and not liberally spending their ‘tax dollars’ policing the world and acting as a very expensive military deterrent for others. He has (I think quite reasonably) made the point that we have been happily defunding our own military safe in the knowledge they’ll properly fund theirs and we can hide behind them.

The UK has no standing any more. We have no proper allies - the USA has ghosted us, we are no longer in the EU, and our Empire is in the dustbin of history. We are still a member of NATO, but we have little influence over the major players anymore.

Add to that that we spend more on disability benefits alone than our entire military budget, our failing economy and high unemployment, and what weight do we have to throw around?

Scary . Sad and very true

Probably not the majority, but a minority significant enough that it’s shifted the societal mindset slightly, yes. Earlier today I saw a comment on Facebook by somebody outraged their child’s teacher won’t accompany them on the bus home from school because the child has anxiety. No thought whatsoever for the teacher, their work times, the fact it would probably take them in the wrong direction from their own home, and the fact they were their bloody parent and should be doing it! It’s not even that extreme an example anymore, although it is up there.

Momtotwokids · 20/02/2025 19:07

I'm sure many will disagree but Biden was in China's pocket. We didn't do anything about that either. I didn't vote for either party. I hope we have a half descent candidate next election but I'm not hopeful.

The only ally the US will have at this rate is Russia. Putin will attack any country he fancies if he’s emboldened by Trump’s support. You do remember that the reason we entered war in Europe last time was because Poland was invaded? And you do know which country borders Poland?

The US doesn't need allies. Allies to us are a burden, not a help. As soon as we get our iron dome up and working, which Trump plans to do in the next few years, we plan to drop our defense spending hugely and with it our tax burden.

Andwhoisasking · 20/02/2025 19:07

I do think however, these issues are what are pushing the move to the right across the world. There is no denying. Europe have hidden behind America for want of a better phrase. We have been blowing money left, right and centre and left ourselves fully exposed. That’s on all recent governments, Labour, Tory, Lib Dem. All that’s happened is a populist has come in and convinced American tax payers they are doing the heavy lifting and that has to stop. A bit like Farage has done here and other leaders in Europe.

Western governments have taken for far too long, caused hatred and separation and now here we are. People are voting for the leaders they feel will put their interests first. People have been given the impression they are paying for everyone else and they are turning away from it.

As a country, we alienated ourselves from the USA, EU and shrunk our defence force whilst killing productivity. The only way we can afford the sweeping investment in defence is to cut state spending. We have reached our limit with taxing as RR has found out. The world is standing by because for too long western governments have been pushing people away. The left really need to address their part in that as well as the right.

I think he's calling Zelensky a dictator because Zelensky has cancelled elections, which is the type of things dictators tend to do.

Several polls-not all- are showing that his popularity has fallen, so a cynical person might not marvel at the fact that the elections are cancelled.

Seriously? How can you have an election mid war? Where are these voters ?

We’re not Russia. Our armed forces are tiny but high quality. These are not trenches.

Your armed forces aren't that high quality, and without American backup they're toast.

Whats wrong with Yanks? They've been known as that forever.

The US have stabbed us & Europe in the back "Special relationship" my arse! they have taken on the roll of International Policeman but now have basically said "You re on your own"...

& don't bring up previous POTUS demands to increase defence spending, it was guidance only, the Tories actually cut it during this time.

A decent friend would have said "You've 5 years, re-arm in that time, or we are gone"

But the biggest betrayal is siding with the Russians, unbelievably treacherous & dangerous for all inc the US.
