My sister is telling me I’m a freak - but any hotter is awful, surely?

I'm with you OP our house is set to 17 for mornings and evenings with DCs room at 18 and no heating overnight (DCs room exempt but we have hive system so easy to regulate).

I'm not menopausal either I just prefer to layer up or cosy under a blanket.

pointythings · 19/02/2025 21:02

It varies wildly and it really depends on your health. Mine is set at 17.5, we wear layers and use blankets when sitting still. And also cats.

As long as the house doesn't get damp, it's fine.

ServantsGonnaServe · 19/02/2025 21:02

We have a range of temps (new build so already warm)

18C in the day
22C for 30 mins before bed
15C overnight.

And if it gets colder overnight your pipes can freeze then burst, causing flooding. Cheaper to heat to at least 10C than need an emergency plumber.

My in-laws are away for the next two weeks they have shut their whole system down 😬

VimesandhisCardboardBoots · 19/02/2025 19:44

Depends entirely on the house and where the thermostat is located. Our new build feels stifling if it's any higher than 17, but our old house needed to be 21 to feel pleasant.

I agree with this.

Ours is set at 16/17 depending on the day but the thermostat is in the coldest part of the house so that means the bedrooms are perfectly warm.

ReignOfError · 19/02/2025 21:05

Mine is 18 for an hour in the morning, 16 all day, 18 again for two hours in the evening, and off all night, plus I keep a window open in all the bedrooms and the bathroom all the time.

I have jumpers, heated blankets, and Oodies, but rarely need them. My husband, who is in his late 70s, does occasionally wear an Oodie, and he sleeps in pyjamas these days.

So you are absolutely not being ureasonable.

stargirl1701 · 19/02/2025 21:06

21 in the evening and for one hour in the morning.

Not on during the day or overnight.

CerealPosterHere · 19/02/2025 21:06

Mine is on 20 and I sleep with 3x 16 tog duvets on me. Not joking.

SmileEachDay · 19/02/2025 20:59

But what about the glorious getting cold then snuggling in the toasty warm bed?

That is NOT glorious

Hortonhearsawhat · 19/02/2025 21:07

Ours is set to 18 and occasionally I'll boost to 20/21, any higher is too hot. Currently thermostat is reading 19 and I've not boosted it, so I assume we have good insulation.

AgnesX · 19/02/2025 21:07

I prefer 20c. At 18c my hands are like ice blocks.

RampantIvy · 19/02/2025 21:07

You are going to get the competitive under-heaters though who are "roasting" at 12c.

There are a few upthread. I think they are bears really Grin

Bournetilly · 19/02/2025 21:08

Mines set to 20 but will turn it up to 25 during the day at times.

Gonners · 19/02/2025 21:08

It has always seemed strange to me that in summer, 18 out of doors is warm ... but in winter, indoors, it's cold. At least, that's my perception of temperatures!

Crazybaby123 · 19/02/2025 21:08

23 to 24 constantly since november. I hate being even a tiny bit cold. If I can't walk around the house in a summer dress and no socks then it is not warm enough.

BeaAndBen · 19/02/2025 21:09

Depends how windy it is! My house gets awfully draughty.

Therefore 17 degrees on a still day is really warm while 20 on a blustery day is cold.

Probably because when I am sat at my desk working I am not moving around, but when outside I am gardening or walking.

OnlyTheBravest · 19/02/2025 21:10

Downstairs (living spaces) 21c.
Upstairs (bedrooms) 18c

WFH in 18c does not work for me I feel too cold .

Does heat not rise in your house? 😀

MumCanIHaveASnackPlease · 19/02/2025 21:16

SmileEachDay · 19/02/2025 20:54

No no NO.

21 is stifling.

Unless you’re on a beach. Maybe you live on a beach?

Just Scotland if that makes a difference!

OnlyTheBravest · 19/02/2025 21:16

It does but I have trv's on the radiators and we tend to leave the window vents open.

It may be weird but it works for my household.

WalkingWavy · 19/02/2025 21:17

We’re a 23 household! DP says we don’t work full time to be cold in our own house so he always has it on and swans around in shorts and tshirt. We’re in Scotland too so perhaps a bit colder than down south

isitmeamithedrama · 19/02/2025 21:18

18 is perfect for my house well downstairs upstairs I keep it at 17
My partners house has to be 20/21 otherwise it feels chilly. His house is bigger though

Pickingmyselfup · 19/02/2025 21:19

20-24 with slippers, tracksuit bottoms, hoodie or oodie. Blanket if I'm sitting still.

I am always cold though and I hate the feel of cold air/a cold nose.

Lately I've been going to bed in a fluffy jumper because I've been waking up cold. No heating on at night though.

Potsofpetals · 19/02/2025 21:21

I have mine at 28 upstairs and keep the windows a jar all year. 25 downstairs in the evening as I don’t want windows open. I don’t get sick and my house is dry. I can’t imagine living in a cold house, in itchy jumpers. I’m sitting here in vest and shorts. I’m just right.
