My sister is telling me I’m a freak - but any hotter is awful, surely?

It depends on the house, and where the thermostat is in the house. Ours is in our draughty hallway, 17.5/18 is the maximum we set it too. In other places we've lived, would go as high as 21. It's a pointless comparison to make between houses IMO and that's not even factoring for personal preference.

is everyone in the house comfortable? Can the bill payer(s) afford it. If yes then crack on surely?

I agree with this. Totally depends if the thermostat is in a colder or warmer part of the house

Mines at 18.. it's perfect. Might turn it down tomorrow as temperature outside is set to rise.

You do know how thermostats work right?

PurpleYarnivore · 20/02/2025 20:10

Mines at 18- for the hours it’s on - a few in morning a few in evening , and couldn’t bear any hotter . Sitting here in pyjamas with vest top and bare feet and I’m plenty warm enough .

Ps. Weird question but do those who have it much colder not get the feeling of having freezing noses and ears? I know a jumper and a blanket help but I find when it's colder my nose is cold and starts running and my ears always feel frozen!

I agree. I reach a point where no matter how many layers I am wearing I just feel chilled to the bone if it is under 18 degrees. I need the ambient temperature to be at least 18 degrees or I just can't function.

We don't have the heating on at night.

user1472151176 · 20/02/2025 20:41

Mine sits between 14 to 17. Occasionally it gets to 18. I grew up in a cold farmhouse so I don't like it too hot

Annoyingsquirrels · 20/02/2025 20:47

We have ours set to 18 most days. I find it depends what you are doing. I find 18 fine if I am actively moving around most of the day. It is a bit chilly if sitting working at a desk but I regularly do at 18 with my heated blanket on.

Iceboy80 · 20/02/2025 21:30

18 is my max, but currently set at 15 any hotter and I get headaches, I'd rather be to cold than to hot but everyone is different but I pay the bills so that's the end of the story really.

Good work with keeping the bills low 😉

No/ not if My house is warm with enough clothes.
during the day my house is set for 13.5 and it’s been fine. I just wear warm pyjamas. I am not cold and I am the type who used to really feel the cold. I have just got used to it.
houses hotter than 18 make me feel like I can’t breathe.

Lyraloo · 20/02/2025 22:27

Lmnop22 · 19/02/2025 19:31

Mine has to be 20 to feel comfortable and not have to have layers or a blanket during the day. 18 at night is perfect though!

I’d die if my heating was on 18 all night 😱 I love a warm bed but cold room to sleep in!

celticprincess · 20/02/2025 22:31

Well my thermostat and the actual room temperatures don’t seem to add up in winter. I feel cold if it’s below 20. But last week when it was freezing outside I needed my thermostat on 25 to get my house up to 20. But the week before when it was warmer I had my thermostat on 20 and the house stayed at about 20. I don’t have it on at all at night. Goes off from 10pm until 5:30am. When it’s really cold outside it’s still only getting up to 18/19 on a morning when I get up around 7 when the heating has come on at 5:30. Currently over winter I’ve left it on all day to keep the house at around 20 as when I was timing it off at 9 when we all go out and to come back on at 3 ready for kids coming home about 4, it was still not reaching 20 by bedtime on colder days. Once we get to April I think I’ll have it a couple of hours on a morning only. Then come summer it’s just off as the house gets up to 25 on its own!! Old 1900s house. New windows though. All laminate floors though which o think makes it colder.

PracticalLady · 20/02/2025 22:37

Our thermostat is always set at 18 degrees and my daughter grew up in this house. We always wear a couple of layers and slippers, so maybe that makes it a liveable temperature We are always busy too and rarely sit down in front of the tv

Pineapplecolada1 · 20/02/2025 22:43

22 during the day and 16 at night

OhcantthInkofaname · 20/02/2025 22:50

I'd freeze in the UK.

Edited

I wear warm clothes. 13.5 degrees is way too cold for a house unless you are a polar bear. No amount of warm clothes and blankets would keep me warm enough to WFH in those temperatures The minimum temperature recommended for the workplace is 16 degrees for an office.

How do you manage in summer when it is a warm and pleasant 23 degrees outside?

RavenhairedRachel · 20/02/2025 23:03

The heating engineer who fitted our new boiler said 16 to 18 degrees is ideal. We have a log burner so our is on for a couple of hours at 16 it's hot enough for us

Fifiworks · 20/02/2025 23:29

It really depends on how well insulated the house is. We completely renovated ours and it is toasty at 19 I find. Used to have the heating set to 22 before.

But if you are well insulated 18 is fine when you are dressed in layers or walking around doing jobs. If you are sitting down watching telly I prefer to be warmer.

sassyclassyandsmartassy · 21/02/2025 00:17

20 and off at night and bedroom window ajar. Very modern house.

TheMauveBeaker · 21/02/2025 05:14

Ours isn’t on a timer, we just turn it up from 10 until it clicks on if we’re chilly. Never at night time though and the bedroom windows are open all year round.

vickylou78 · 21/02/2025 08:17

MotionofTime · 19/02/2025 20:52

God, I live in a freezer compared to most - house is usually 12 degrees.

That's basically outdoors temperature! Where we'd be wearing coats. This would make me so miserable. Are you sure it's that temperature?

lobsterkiller · 21/02/2025 08:26

Mine ranges from 16 - 18. Very rarely above. I can't bear warm bedrooms as it hinders sleep but I do feel the cold more than most people. I layer up and I do run a log burner too on the weekend.

Whatafustercluck · 21/02/2025 08:32

TickingAlongNicely · 19/02/2025 19:28

I think some houses feel hotter than others when at the same temp on the thermostat... ours feels really toasty at 18. Its often at 16 during the day and completely fine.

This - the effectiveness of the boiler is key. Before we had ours replaced last year, we were having to crank ours up to 20-21 to feel warm enough. It was 25 years old, and finally gave in. Since the new boiler was fitted, we've rarely had to go above 18.5.

JaneBoleynViscountessRochford · 21/02/2025 08:59

Sally20099 · 20/02/2025 17:47

Brrrrr - 20 to 20.5 downstairs and 19 upstairs for us. Everyone’s different though and that’s what makes the world so interesting and fun

Ah but on MN if you don’t like your house too hot or you are competitively under heating, see also if you don’t eat as much as someone else or anything else that goes against the accepted grain of some people’s lives.

SmileEachDay · 21/02/2025 09:13

So we have a range of 12 to 26 degrees.

Wild.

Maybe some of us evolved from lizards and some from polar bears.

Or, maybe, you can accept that the same number on the thermostat doesn't lead to the same resulting temperature at different parts of different homes.
