Women singers singing in their knickers.

I admit I'm older generation.
I'm a great admirer of singers such as Nina Simone, Linda Ronstadt, Suzi Quatro, Christine Perfect, Joan Baez, Tracy Chapman etc, etc.
They all not only have great voices but also real musical talent.
And they also don't stand and sing in their knickers
So what is it with people like Beyonce and Rhianna? If they really are talented why do they need to sing in their knickers? Why do they need to use sex to sell their songs? They are powerful enough not to bend to the industry pressure on them. Why not stand or fall on their talents rather than on selling their sexuality.?

I found the choice of examples interesting also.

Especially as Taylor swift has just done a massively successsful world tour in what’s essentially a series of corsets.

Also interesting to see someone write ‘if’ Beyoncé is talented…….really that’s a question? Hahahahaah. Come on.

Interesting how OP has zoned in on those two performers in particular…

Has Rhianna even released an album this decade?

I can’t imagine what they have in common… 🤷🏾‍♀️

StarlightLady · 20/02/2025 07:06

(Lighthearted) Because if they sang without their knickers on it would distract from the music 🫢⚡️.

It reminds me of the time l won a bet saying l would go to a pub in my knickers.

And both being billionaires too. Even if Beyonce was dressed like a handmaiden for her next album, OP would still find an issue. The spite hasn’t been adequately disguised.

I’m guessing OP prefers black female singers to be downtrodden, unattractive and selling a shitty low aspirational lifestyle.

LucyMonth · 20/02/2025 07:48

OP have you thought that maybe Beyonce doesn’t appeal to you because you are (self described) an “older” white woman and maybe it’s ok that all music isn’t performed specifically with you in mind?

You like Tracy Chapman? She’s great. She’s released 8 albums and won 4 Grammys. Beyonce has also released 8 solo albums and has 35 Grammys. As a black woman she is the most awarded artist in history. That’s amazing. That doesn’t happen if you don’t have talent.

Unlike Tracy and the other artist you mentioned Beyoncé is a PERFORMER. Going to see her perform is like watching a West End musical but BIGGER. You can watch Tracy stand behind a guitar for 2 hours and she’ll be great but, Beyonce is going to give you a SHOW.

There are countless videos on YouTube from professionals analysing Beyoncé’s vocals and she objectively is one of the best vocal talents to have ever existed. The range of things she can do with her voice and do well is incredible. Even if subjectively you don’t enjoy her music that doesn’t mean she isn’t talented. It’s just factual that she is immensely talented.

I’d also Google Beyoncé’s public appearances so far this year. No pants in sight. An abundance of photos of her wearing beautiful outfits to the various award ceremonies where she was highly awarded, as she always is.

Mookie81 · 20/02/2025 07:52

And to repeat Rihanna has not performed in years and her last one off show she was covered up so why did you mention her as an example.
Because she hasn't heard of Megan Thee Stallion, Cardi B, Nicki Minaj or any of the newer black female performers in order to dig them out.

Mookie81 · 20/02/2025 08:24

Mmeme · 20/02/2025 02:36

We're on completely different pages. I'm not sure really what your serious point is.

I don't think anything I say is going to turn this into a meaningful exchange, so I'll leave it there.

Because your original point was nonsensical and you have no answer.

Userengage · 20/02/2025 08:30

OP is so transparent.

Do you people not feel embarrassed if their underwear is showing?

If it was their actual underwear was maybe? Though as a grown woman I have seen plenty of underwear in my time and I might feel bad they had a wardrobe mishap, but not dwell on it.

However, generally you are not seeing their underwear, these are specially designed performance wear outfits. When you see Sabrina Carpenters 'knickers' as she leans over, you are actually seeing built in shorts/breifs that are a part of the outfit. When Taylor is dancing and her skirt flies up/fringe moves and you see 'underwear', again it's the base layer of the costume, no different to seeing a leotard covering ballet dancers bottom half.

Hankunamatata · 19/02/2025 17:34

Madonna started it 😬

She really didn't. Have you seen the early photos of Kate Bush in that vest. All nipples. It was on the side of buses.

Coolasfeck · 20/02/2025 09:20

It actually kind of makes sense for them to wear (sparkly) gymnast style leotards/minimal flexible clothing because they are onstage for 2 hours doing intense dance routines and doing acrobatics suspended from the ceiling under hot lights. It would make a HIIT class feel like a stroll around the block in comparison.

If they were the types of performers who only sang and didn’t dance I’m sure they’d be in sparkly ballgowns instead.

The famous Kate Bush poster

Women singers singing in their knickers.
beguilingeyes · 20/02/2025 09:28

I think a lot of it is because..women. I saw Taylor at Wembley and when Ed Sheeran came on he looked like he'd just got out of bed. Taylor was in a beautiful long dress. Women are expected to look glamorous.
It's ok for Neil Young to be a munter (sorry Neil), but women have to be beautiful and talented. And young, pretty mcuh.

If you are embarrassed about your underwear it’s time to buy new!

User32459 · 20/02/2025 09:32

They love singing about sex as well. I know rappers do it (their lyrics are full of misogyny) but a male pop star singing about their sex lives every other song would be sleazy. For women it's apparently empowering.

I was listening to Sabrina Carpenter's album, which I like, but literally every song is about men and her sex life.

Taylor had both (and everything in between, so many costume changes!) in her Eras tour. It's interesting that people are only focused on the corset type outfits.

FallOfTheHouseOfUtterlyButterly · 20/02/2025 09:53

I'm sure I saw a singer recently calling out how there are plenty of male performers who wear/wore catsuits so tight you could see their dick and who perform topless but they don't get called anything like the names female performers get called for showing the same amount of skin...

I just don't want it showing.

But you are not on stage with underwear that is designed to show. It’s the same with some outfits on Strictly.

XWKD · 20/02/2025 12:20

Well to me if you feel people will only listen to your music if you are wearing a pair of knickers when you sing it says more about your lack of confidence in your musical talent than about your fashion choices.

You're making a huge assumption here. You know nothing about their confidence in their musical abilities.

Eh? Could you point to my nonsensical point?

I do find these conversations funny though.

Muslims women’s niqabs and hijabs are a symbol of patriarchy and male oppression.

Female performers in leotards and revealing outfits are also a symbol of patriarchy and male oppression.

What is the precise numbers of centimetres of material a woman must wear to be just right between the two? 😂

Edited

I think it’s more about the question of who originated and controls ideas/norms of how women should dress and present.

I do totally agree though that there is a societal tendency to find fault with women whatever they wear/do and however they look and present. But I think that’s part of the same issue.

Sure, in isolation the statement ‘women can perform in tiny outfits if they want to’ and the statement ‘women can wear a hijab if they want to’ sound uncontroversial and as if they’re acknowledging women’s agency.
But nothing happens in isolation; there’s a social context to everything.

This is so reductionist.

No-one is listening to anyone because of their clothes

Lack of clothes

Lack of clothes

Same difference.
