Women singers singing in their knickers.

I admit I'm older generation.
I'm a great admirer of singers such as Nina Simone, Linda Ronstadt, Suzi Quatro, Christine Perfect, Joan Baez, Tracy Chapman etc, etc.
They all not only have great voices but also real musical talent.
And they also don't stand and sing in their knickers
So what is it with people like Beyonce and Rhianna? If they really are talented why do they need to sing in their knickers? Why do they need to use sex to sell their songs? They are powerful enough not to bend to the industry pressure on them. Why not stand or fall on their talents rather than on selling their sexuality.?

She acts out sex positions in every show doesn't she? When she sings Juno.

So I wasn’t imagining it! At least I wasn’t insinuating she performs in nasty corners of the internet like a pp did.

ShapedLikeAPastry · 19/02/2025 21:10

Atm I'm feeling more forgiving of her because having recently heard her on Desert island Discs came over so well that I can overlook the disappointment I felt in her then.

I can hear Cher's sigh of relief from here.

Ah, Slipknot. I’m not sure that men who vomit into the masks they’re wearing on stage and carry on performing are much better examples of human beings than women in their pants…

Yes they are not my cup of tea 😁

Doesn't Kate Middleton dress the way she does because she's required to? I have seen plenty of pictures of her prior to marrying William where she was not dressed quite so conservatively.

The classy woman is someone who famously has limited agency over her public image and styling.

Thelasthurdle · 19/02/2025 21:04

Well actually I did think less of Cher because of her choices regarding costumes and surgery.
I'm sure that is totally politically incorrect but I felt she totally undermined and trivialised her own talent.

It’s interesting that you mentioned Princess Kate in an earlier post (I think it was you, apologies if not), because I always feel that I would hate to be stuck in “pretty” dresses and hats with tan tights and sensible heels. I think that is patriarchy at play also. When I think of her in fact I fear that she is more silenced than when I think of Beyoncé, who (I think) plays on the idea of the male gaze; presents her body as she wishes to; shows her beautiful body carrying a baby. I think my soul would be crushed as a princess.

No it was a stage performance.

No of course not, I’ve no idea what performance it was. I’m pretty sure it was daylight though so just a performance during the day on a stage outside, a festival perhaps? What on earth makes you think Sabrina is performing in some nasty corners of the internet?

No I think you’re accessing the videos in some nasty places on the internet. It’s certainly not like that in the YouTube comments.

I thoroughly agree. Women being presented as sex objects encourages men to see all of us as brainless bimbos whose main job is to provide sex.

I think clothing is skimpier than ever these days, from what teens wear to girls and young women posing on Instagram wearing extremely small and suggestive clothing, to female sports stars wearing their uniforms up their bum cracks. Some of the Olympic dive teams practically had bare bums. I watch figure skating, and some of the women's costumes are the same in the seat area, and many of the costumes look like sexy lingerie as they make copious use of flesh-coloured material to look as if they're hardly wearing anything. It never used to be like this.

Skimpy clothing in public or on social media is simply tasteless, desperate, and cheap-looking, and nothing will ever convince me otherwise. Women and girls who dress like that make themselves look pretty dim, when they may be anything but. There's not much correlation between the amount of skin on show and how alluring you are. In the photos below, KM looks really sexy without having to get out her chest or bum or midriff.

Kate Middleton is deeply unsexy. Attractive, yes. Sexy? Absolutely not.

Of course - upthread I wrote about how sexual her songs are.

But, of course, as her fan base is women the comments aren’t full of leery comments, at least on any normal website.

Yes there’s a part in the song where she sings “Have you ever tried…. this one?” And does a sex mime. It reminds me of the old “position of the week” in More magazine that my teenage self and friends used to giggle over in the 00s 😁

So your whole understanding of Beyoncé is a pregnancy photo and recognition of one song, and that was enough of an understanding to start a thread about how they should/ could resist the music industry, how they are bad role models, how you dislike their image?

At the very least it’s a spectacular display of a lack of self awareness and an overestimation of yourself.

Well actually no. I do have more knowledge of Beyonce than that and my reason for starting the thread actually wasn't to have a go at her in particular.
I was watching Joen Baez singing at the 1960s Civil rights marches on YouTube earlier this evening.
And as always, and actually particularly when I watch Linda Ronstadt - who was beautiful and talented - when I watch these singers from the past singing I'm just struck by their overwhelming lack of need to take their clothes off, simulate sexual acts , behave like porn stars, etc etc because their singing talent is enough.

Kate’s entire image is predicated on the man she is associated with and his family. Feminism indeed.

I’m going to check out of this thread, you have to be trolling oh my god.

Women remain other women’s worst enemies. Gross.

Sabrina has a remarkable ability to perform songs about sex wearing stereotypically sexy attire, and somehow her concert still feels like it has a fun sleepover party vibe for women rather than something designed for men.

I don't know what you mean by trolling.
The whole premise of my thread was why, if a woman has musical talent, does she need to take her clothes off for people to listen to her?
And actually yes, I find it sad, that after all these years of feminism nothing has changed: it's women's bodies that sell. Not all the other talents they have.
You only have to walk down any street and its the teenage girls that are walking round half naked. The teenage boys aren't.
So explain to me why you are calling me a troll?

What are you talking about?

yes I wonder if we as women carve away at each others bodies as badly as the patriarchy throughout history… is that internalised misogyny?

whereas when I watch Beyoncé striding majestically down the road and bashing the cars with a bat in the ‘Hold Up’ video, I feel strength and solidarity… women letting out rage (in a way Kate Middleton would never be able to!) and also allowing themselves to be intensely vulnerable in writing about painful events in society and in their personal lives.

Why is she bashing cars with a bat?
Is she an environmentalist?

Out of interest, what do you think about Sia? I was listening to an earlier interview with her last night actually - and I’m really interested in how she uses clothes and hair now. I’m also wondering if some (not all) women in the music industry (likely those with more power and money) are reclaiming their bodies and their hair back from the patriarchy…. Deciding what and how they use their bodies? I have a daughter… I want to see her in charge of what happens to her body and what she does with her body and how she chooses to dress it as she grows older. And I would hope that she would be able to articulate what she is doing and why. Beyoncé, to my mind, is a very intelligent woman. I’m sure there will be much thought and feeling behind what she chooses to do with her body and her hair. Sadly I think it’s different for young girls getting into modelling; acting; singing… and the royal family

Suzi Quattro used to wear skin tight black leather top and bottoms and a deep plunge neckline with a vast cleavage.

Vast cleavage?? Petite little Suzi? Are you mixing her up with Chaka Khan?
