To ask my pharmacist to use my actual title on my medicine

Everythingisnumbersnow · 18/02/2025 16:00

decided to edit this a bit for clarity - I'm a Ms, my pharmacist keeps writing Miss on the labels (as part of a wider pattern of annoying behaviour). Will I look mad if I say please call me Ms on my labels?

(The prescriptions all say Ms)

You can tell them you do not want to disclose in front of other customers or ask to speak in the consulting room.

The Boots pharmacist is a human and could have been having a bad day hence the short response. It could be they’re someone who’s not particularly nice but that doesn’t give you the right to discredit an entire profession.

I despise my local Boots because there are just not enough staff so no matter how hard the pharmacist tries, the service is appalling. Doesn’t mean every Boots in the country is as bad

Yeah, my local Market Town Boots is brilliant. (3.5 miles away.) Smiley, helpful staff who are happy to help you. Quick efficient service. Only 2-3 days from requesting a prescription from the GP - to getting it - from Boots. 15 minute wait if you take it in... And open 8.30am to 6pm every day except Sunday. The other little market town 8 miles away from me has a really good Boots too. Same service.

3 other Boots I know (in a large town 14-16 miles away,) are dreadful, with not enough staff, long waits for prescriptions, and management who just sit on their arse watching people standing there waiting to be served.

YABU. Ms is pretentious. You’re either a Miss or a Mrs. Ms to me is someone who is divorced or unmarried and for some reason doesn’t want to say so. Ms is akin to they/ them. You’re one or the other- shit or get off the pot.

This. ^ Anyone who insists on using 'Ms' is divorced or single, and is embarrassed to be (divorced or single.)

I'm not saying women who are divorced or single should be embarrassed, at all! But IMO the women who insist on being called 'Ms' are a bit embarrassed about their marital status, and are desperate to hide it. 👀

IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle · 18/02/2025 20:06

And as for pharmacists asking questions for the last 5 years I have bought a medication which can be issued on prescription or sold only by a pharmacist. My consultant offered a prescription but I don't have a script for it. I think it's a waste of NHS time and money to process a prescription for something which can be bought without one.

Now I know, and my consultant knows, there is a contraindication for a condition I have but the benefit far outweighs the contraindication and I take it on the consultant's reccomendation. The nature of the medicine is one that the contraindication should be obvious. The manufacturers say on their literature that it shouldn't be used by someone with my condition.

Not once has any pharmacist asked about this or asked if this is on a doctor's reccomendation or self diagnosis.

Bababear987 · 18/02/2025 20:12

I genuinely think you must have lived some sort of absolutely privileged life to get so wound up over something so ridiculous. Like I flabbergasted that people have so much time on their hands to be so petty over a title. I didnt even realise anyone alive today would care about their title, I find womens titles so misogynistic.

Secondly the pharmacist is probably fed up with you commenting and complaining over every little thing everytime you come in. You sound like one of those people who is just never happy and has to make a fuss. Being a pharmacist in community is a horrible, thankless job and you've just proved it. Peoples expectations are so high, pharmacists clinically and physically check hundreds of scripts a day, do vaccinations, run BP, viagra, morning after puill and diabetes clinics, sort staff issues, sort customer/gp issues, order medicines, to a mountain of paperwork.... very rarely get lunch or get home on time and yet people question our role and blame us for everything.
Pharmacist do not just stick labels on stuff, they clinically check prescriptions and you would not believe the amount of errors doctors make.
Most hospital wards now have their own pharmacists because of their knowledge of medication. Pharmacists actually correct a lot of what doctors do.

At the end of the day, theres no way to address it without the staff all doing an eye roll. If you must, ask the girls at the counter or find another pharmacy and give everyone there a break.

Yeah, go for it, it's not like the NHS isn't busy enough.

What has it got to do with the NHS?

Why do women have to anounce their marital status? Men get Mr. and that's it. I've never seen a sensible explanation for this.

I'm married. I don't care whether it's Miss or Ms. I hate Mrs. I don't mind being Frau, Madame, Mevrouw, Signora, etc, etc, because other countries don't have this ridiculous belief that a woman's marital status must be visible every time she uses her name.

Everythingisnumbersnow · 18/02/2025 16:04

I pay the pharmacist hundreds of pounds I think they could owe me a bit of politeness in return

So not an NHS pharmacy ?

dannyufcfan · 18/02/2025 20:28

Life is too short.

They call have my name printed on it as 'Mr Wanker' for all I care.

Burntt · 18/02/2025 21:05

It pisses me off too i would ask them to correct it. It's fine to let it go now and then when people don't know but to not match with what the prescription says would make me comment.

It's not a big deal to many. But I do not believe a woman should have to announce her relationship status nor to I believe it has any relevance to most things that require your title.

GabriellaMontez · 18/02/2025 21:24

prescribingmum · 18/02/2025 19:14

Pharmacists are highly trained professionals and are expected to do FAR MORE than just check name, address and medication. Otherwise a vending machine could do the job. GPs are not infallible and can make mistakes, the expectation is we pick it up if it does happen

If there is an error with the prescription where the dose is wrong and the patient comes to harm, we are jointly liable with the GP. Yes we do ask why something has been prescribed on occasion because some drugs are prescribed at different doses for different conditions.

With an attitude like yours, it’s no wonder your pharmacist has taken a dislike to you

Edited

So you agree it's important that details are correct? Like the patients title.

Or not...?

ilovesooty · 18/02/2025 21:26

Just ask them to correct it. Why the drama? Alternatively you could remind them of your financial clout and tell them you expect them to be more respectful, given the hundreds of pounds you spend on your private prescription.

MissTrip82 · 18/02/2025 21:28

I suspect there are quite a lot of people who can’t understand ‘the drama’ who’d be very annoyed indeed if their title was changed from Mrs to Ms…….

Do children work in pharmacies?

What has it got to do with the NHS?

It has to do with the NHS because if you request your Dr to change the title on your notes - which is the only way you will get your pharmacist to put Ms instead of Miss - then that has to be updated across all your records. The NHS has enough to do updating records without having unnecessary work added - and changing Miss to Ms is unnecessary work.

Of all the things wrong with both of these posts, not knowing that MN is the land of married Ms has to be the winner. There are sooooo many of us on here!

Hello, the 1950s called, they want you back.

(Married Ms here.)

IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle · 18/02/2025 21:58

Replying to Grammarnut

Bit like changing Miss to Mrs then?

In any case as this is a private presciption it was probably written by a private GP so nothing whatsoever to do with the NHS. The prescription was written as Ms. The pharmacist doesn't have access to the OP's NHS records.

What has it got to do with the NHS?

Where do you think pharmacies get their funding?

IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle · 18/02/2025 22:12

LlamaDharma · 18/02/2025 22:05

Where do you think pharmacies get their funding?

Pharmacies are independent businesses contracted by the NHS to provide certain services, including dispensing prescription medicines. They are paid to do this by the NHS. They are not funded by the NHS.

Anyone choosing to pay for a private prescription, or choosing to pay for medicines which could be prescribed is saving the NHS money.

Itisalovelyday2025 · 18/02/2025 22:17

Can I ask why you buy painkillers suitable for cancer patients online ? Will your GP not prescribe you them ? Do you feel like you are being judged by the pharmacy staff for buying strong painkillers online ...presumably opioids?

IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle · 18/02/2025 22:36

KirstyandPhilme · 18/02/2025 18:01

Miss sounds like an ancient crone

Oh stop being silly.

Every woman is a Miss unless she marries.

Then it's Mrs although some women keep it to Miss for professional reasons if they retain their maiden name.

You sound egocentric I'm afraid.

The Mzzzzz was invented partly to try to apply to women who used Mrs but then got divorced and felt Miss wasn't appropriate any more- for whatever odd reason.

No it wasn't. It was meant to be like Mr. You can't tell a man's marital status.

IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle · 18/02/2025 22:40

BigDecisionWorthIt · 18/02/2025 18:03

Accuracy, efficiency and to avoid mistakes.

Better to have just one patient record on the system for someone than having multiple.

The prescription I used to pay for privately was not linked to my NHS records. The private GP didn't inform my NHS GP.

DrLottie · 18/02/2025 22:41

My actual title is "Dr". But I go with Miss or Mrs or Ms on anything medical. Deliberately, as I'm not a medical Dr, or an arse!
