To ask how to best handle this car blocking my drive?

Parkingdrama00 · 16/02/2025 14:07

I live near to a football stadium and the team are currently playing. Somebody has parked right across my drive and blocked me in. I assume they have gone the match.

You need a residents pass to park round here and it doesn't look like they have one. Looks like I'm trapped until they come back.

What's best to do? Can I report them to the council? Leave a note? Confront them upon their return. Or is all of that pointless?

I wanted to go to the supermarket which will likely be closed by the time they're back.

Odd how an illegally parked car getting towed is so fascinating to witness.
I was in a restaurant and some nob had parked outside on double yellows, we saw him swagger away with an air of self entitlement.
Unfortunately for him, so did a traffic warden, and soon his prestige car was being lifted up.
The whole restaurant was more interested in watching through the big glass window, than they were in their food.

Very entertaining.

I guess it’s because we all want to see people get their comeuppance especially when we follow the rules ourselves.

Drives me mad when people just leave their cars wherever they like. Parking on a double yellow links with your hazard lights on doesn’t suddenly make it legal or absolve you from committing an offence.

I wish there were cameras everywhere catching people jumping red lights. They do it all the time where I live.

ill admit fastest ive seen a car get towed

We used to live near a football stadium (although much smaller than Anfield) and part of the conditions that allowed the club to play there, was that they were responsible for traffic management. The tow trucks, traffic officers etc were funded by the club. It’s not that they were quick as much as they’re hired for that specific purpose. In the same way as there’s ambulances and paramedics stationed at the ground. If someone is taken poorly at the match, they will be seen to by those people and not a general 999 call.

I know what you mean, if they are away fans how will they get home, get to work tomorrow, get back to pick up the car and all the associated costs

The punishment does feel a tad harsh for the crime

Not blaming the OP, she was egged on by all the armchair combatants but I do feel some sympathy

What if op had to get to hospital, or a sick or dying relative, or to work(people do work on Sundays). So no.

I have absolutely no sympathy for them.

Are you mad? Utterly selfish, entitled wanky parking. They need some kind of harsh punishment to make them realise this is not on.

I've had lots of issues with CF parking, including an emergency so I know how it feels.

StressedLP1 · 16/02/2025 17:06

ChancesAreLow · 16/02/2025 16:59

I feel zero sympathy - they made a choice block someone in, without giving a shit.

They could have knocked on the door and asked.
They could have paid for parking.
Lots of options, but they decided to do whatever they wanted.

Yup. It’s a total ‘fuck around and find out’ situation.

Someone blocked me in once and I missed a GP appointment. I called 111 and the police officer was all ‘huh?’ so I’m particularly enjoying the efficiency of the Merseyside police in this scenario.

stayawayyyyyfromdatingapps · 16/02/2025 17:01

I'd do it. I'd key the car.

Why on earth would you do that ? If OP has shown anything it’s that there’s a perfectly legitimate and legal way to sort the problem out. Why would you want to resort to unnecessary vandalism and possibly run the risk of being prosecuted yourself. Anyone with a phone has a camera these days and if the street WhatsApp are involved you can bet somebody would snap it.

I agree that it was a bit over the top to get it towed. I would have left a note on the car saying that it would be towed if left there again.
I would never block someone’s driveway myself though so it is very CF behaviour.

I assume your drive isn't regularly blocked by CFs who think no one else has anything important to do, and they are far more important than anyone else...

Really disagree with this
There was a car park up the road
OP could have had a medical situation, flight to catch or other journey to make, family celebration etc.

I don't care if OP had nothing planned. If you are prepared to potentially impact someone like that then you can take every consequence of your actions

IWillJustSayThis · 16/02/2025 17:08

The thing is, the Club want and need the local residents on side. The police and council the same - the council will prioritise residents in this situation. Not doing so can be a huge PR disaster. It 'pays' to have more tow trucks on event days. As someone said, what if the OP had missed a hospital appointment and couldn't afford a taxi?

If you let this behaviour slide then chaos begins.

I'm not mad in the slightest and I'm not saying they dont deserve some form of negative consequences but the cost and potential knock on effects aren't proportionate to the offence imo

Exactly or could literally park for free somewhere legit and just get a taxi!!

Totally agree. And the CFs won't learn a lesson unless it hurts - in this case, in their pocket!

And next time the driver wouldn't park there, but park elsewhere and block someone else in. No, people like that need to be held to account.

pinkstripeycat · 16/02/2025 17:10

Liverpool to Wolverhampton. That’s a fair old drive.

How does the tow company tell someone their car has been towed? They’ll probably think it’s been stolen.

But they're an away fan so won't sdo it again, so all you would be doing is teaching them they can get away with twatty behaviour.

The @Parkingdrama00 has done exactly the right thing and the system has worked as it is supposed to. Now it would have been a real shame had an accident befallen the car before either was towed, but you can't wish for everything 🤷‍♀️

RunningJo · 16/02/2025 17:11

Lougle · 16/02/2025 16:57

Although it's absolutely right, I'm feeling a little sorry for them now. Who knows where they live - they could also need taxi fares in both directions, and taxi fares to the impound...I'm not near a football field, so if this happened to me it would add at least another £100 on to the bill.

Perhaps they should have thought about this when they decided to park there. 🤷🏼‍♀️
They didn’t give the OP a second thought as to how she may leave her drive, or if she needed to get somewhere
I don’t take delight in the misfortunes of others but this is entirely self inflicted.

2Rebecca · 16/02/2025 17:11

I don't think the punishment is harsh for the crime. One of the main rules of parking is that you don't obstruct other people ( unless they are parked illegally like on your drive) it should have been obvious they were blocking a driveway

WhatFreshHellisThese · 16/02/2025 17:11

Love it! Nice fast work by the police as well

I sort of agree re the kids. The driver has will need to go home , retrieve proof documents and then wait for the Pound to open. It could be a long journey home!

But that was the choice the driver made when they parked there. So if they do have kids, then that’s poor parenting.
