To ask how to best handle this car blocking my drive?

Parkingdrama00 · 16/02/2025 14:07

I live near to a football stadium and the team are currently playing. Somebody has parked right across my drive and blocked me in. I assume they have gone the match.

You need a residents pass to park round here and it doesn't look like they have one. Looks like I'm trapped until they come back.

What's best to do? Can I report them to the council? Leave a note? Confront them upon their return. Or is all of that pointless?

I wanted to go to the supermarket which will likely be closed by the time they're back.

This situation definitely calls for snacks.

Where I live the small convenience stores are open until 10 pm on Sundays, the same might be true where the OP lives.

Maybe that they couldn't get in to the driveway rather than out

Same thing, if they cannot get onto the driveway the driveway access is blocked, physically at the very least.

Not to mention that there could be an emergency at any time, and then it's going to be really inconvenient for any emergency services like ambulances or fire engines.

Can you imagine someone knocking at your door telling you to move your car in a life or death situation and it's not your car but you couldn't be bothered to do anything so you just left it there

Ambulances and police, yes; but fire engines are enormous and extremely heavy. They just bulldoze the vehicle out of the way - and usually leave it a write-off.

If it was parked or being driven illegally and/or dangerously, the driver/owner has nobody to blame but themselves - and very good luck to them in trying to get their insurer to pay out as a result; in fact, their insurance premium will probably go sky high once they've managed to save up enough money to buy a new car!

I'm not saying I think @Parkingdrama00 was wrong to call the police. I'm not saying that the car should not have been towed. I am just capable of seeing the other side of a situation and feeling a little sympathy for someone who made a bad decision that has spiralled into a huge problem. Their probably rash decision to block a driveway will cause inconvenience and expense way beyond their expectation and I can imagine that they didn't forsee it at all.

They're learning an expensive lesson, and to be honest, their mates will probably be glad that they've learned it for them.

Rubbish. Zero sympathy. Completely and deliberately blocking someone's driveway isn't a bad decision, it's calculating and massively selfish and disrespectful. They didn't park there because they were desperately trying to get to hospital or something in an emergency. It was a football match and they were too tight to pay for parking.

This is a good lesson for them. Maybe they'll moderate their behaviour in future.

Most don't leave straight away. When I went to football matches with ex they would go in the bar after for a drink and talk about the game. The game would usually finish around 4.30-5 but we wouldn't leave until around 7-8pm. He would sometimes take his DD. The only time we left earlier was if he had his DD with him.

Big generalisation of football fans and pub connection .. I’m a season ticket holder of a well known premier league club and leave home matches straightaway ( and don’t park across peoples drives 😊)

Ooh ok I'm gonna ring now. They are most likely from out of town so that will be a big inconvenience. We do get some selfish parking here on match days but this takes the biscuit.

There's a car park around the corner but it's £20 so I guess they're too tight to pay it.

It won't seem so much after paying towing costs! How bloody rude! They must've realised what they were doing. I hope you DO get it towed... serve them right!

It was towed yesterday, 2 hours after the thread was started.

I use the app and can see OP posts only.

I click on the funnel looking bit on the top right and select OP.

I think you can select posters who have responded but that's a premium feature?

Did not know this! Thank you 😊

Bit late to the party on this but next time report to the police. The P can access contact details of car owner and request car owner return immediately or else...

What... by letter? Or bat-signal in the sky? They won't have the blokes mobile number.

Very late to the party though, the police were called and a tow-truck was sent to remove it.

Not quite. If a vehicle blocks someone out of their driveway the police/LA will usually only act if the kerb is dropped to allow access. It’s a different offence to blocking access to the highway.

Nanny1965 · 18/02/2025 09:04

All these silly comments about scratching cars or breaking window. That's criminal damage and will get you prosecuted. Also the car owner knows where you live. Will cost a lot more to get your house windows replaced ! Ring non emergency cops. It's an offence to block someone In like that

HippingFleck · 18/02/2025 09:25

MJconfessions · 16/02/2025 17:15

You have confirmed the stadium and where you live on this thread. You admit you lied to the police about needing to go out and care for your elderly mum. In reality you just wanted to get groceries for your lunch at work, and you didn’t do that in the end.

If the police knew the reality was that you’ll be chilling at home with wine, chances are they wouldn’t have got involved.

So whilst it’s cathartic having an inconsiderate driver being towed, it just comes across as a waste of resources. Now you’ll potentially have an angry or drunk group of football fans on your doorstep, potentially requiring further police intervention. Football fans generally aren’t the most reasonable people, their initial reaction will likely be worry or rage (ie was the car stolen?)

Whilst everyone else is happy to watch on with popcorn, the truth is no one here or on the neighbourhood group chat will protect you if things go south @Parkingdrama00

There is no cost to anyone but the driver, they pay to have car released and that covers the cost.
The OP doesn't and shouldn't have to feel guilty or scared, which feels like the intention of your post.
People should be more considerate, it doesn't matter that there was no emergency, there could have been and no one has the right to block a driveway, was their need a pressing one? I think not so cannot understand your reasoning at all!

Sauvage · 17/02/2025 09:11

it happens to me all the time and you loose sympathy. It’s not ok for people to park across someone’s driveway. I really was reading with glee as it happens to me all the time and it’s great to see some justice!

I think this is a big part of the problem: CFs act flagrantly, but somehow think that they are the only ones, and that everybody else will behave properly.

"I'm only going to be 5 minutes" (invariably at least half an hour in reality) is bad enough, as they can't possibly know whether you want/need to access your property during those 5 (30) minutes that they've decided to remove your legal rights to do so; but when you get CF after CF after CF, all of whom are 'only going to be 5 minutes', your patience will of course be stretched to breaking point.

Anyone rude enough to park across anyones drive deserves to have their car towed. It is never an accident.

It was for me
I stumbled out of an early weeks NCT mums meet-up to find a couple of coppers eyeing up my car which I had parked blocking a drive, a very long one, no house or parked car apparent, but definitely a drive and blocked 🤦‍♀️
I was mortified, it was a complete accident brought on by baby brain. I apologised profusely, and was sent on my way.

AnnoyedAsAllHeck · 21/02/2025 06:40

Praying4Peace · 17/02/2025 09:15

I have similar experience and called a cab to get to where I needed to go.
Massively inconvenient but a resolvable problem. If an emergency occurred, there is 999
My point is that reaction was disproportionate to the event IMO

So, it would be better for the OP to be out of pocket for a taxi over the rude, inconsiderate driver? FFS!

I hope you stop blocking other people's drives and then minimizing their inconvenience. LOL!

SparkyBlue · 21/02/2025 09:05

My mum lives near a rugby ground and it's the same. Some absolutely spectacular CF parking. I'm delighted that the OP got the result she got as that idiot won't do it again. Police actually block off certain parts now for resident only access on big match days as it had gotten so bad there. The residents committees had to come together and get really tough on it. These people don't care as they plan on driving off after the match so they don't give a toss about having inconvenienced the local residents.

Thinking about it, they should put an announcement in the program, over the tannoy or on the board saying:-

A local resident was blocked in by an inconsiderate supporter, she arranged the car to be towed away and it cost them £££. Please think before you park to save upsetting the residents or costing yourself dearly.

But I’m probably being too hopeful, that it would make any difference.
