AIBU to get angry about Pizza Express...

...pizzas with holes cut out and salad put in the middle? Why?! Why the fuck not just order a smaller pizza and get a side salad?!! Who get's the bits they cut out? Is there a secret menu? Are the 'holes' what prince andrew eats when he goes?
For something that doesn't concern me as I'd never order one it does make me quite unreasonably angry. In fact my dander levels have been drastically elevated since I saw the menu on Thursday.

(Although it does look like the chef enjoyed making it VERY much!😮)

It annoys me too, because I do want a smaller pizza and I do want salad, but I am not concerned about calories.

So I want the cheese/topping bit not the crust.

The crust to topping ratio is all wrong for me.

liveforsummer · 16/02/2025 09:37

It's a handy light lunch if you're not starving. Obviously they just take out the dough circle then return it to their larger dough to make the next pizza base - they don't make a whole pizza, toppings and all then chop it out. Nice little presentation without cluttering the table too!

Jackiepumpkinhead · 16/02/2025 09:37

I’d order it if it was an actual salad (with tomatoes and cucumbers), not a fan of just leaves. And it’s very expensive for what it is.

Yes, there is little I enjoy more than a slightly squashed thrice-handled pizza with toppings that have slid to the corner of the box and then been redistributed.

Except if it's half a thrice-handled pizza that's been on an onward trip to the cinema before the bus and walk home.

Definitely superior to ordering the amount of food that I wanted and eating it in the place I'd gone to for the purpose of eating.

Edited

Obviously I said this assuming the person is going home after. And nothing wrong with left over pizza

mogtheexcellent · 16/02/2025 09:39

I love those pizzas. Whole pizza doesnt leave room for pudding and I dont have to order the salad as a side.

and yes to a PP - the caramilsed onion and goats cheese one is yum.

CaptainMyCaptain · 16/02/2025 09:39

Do you feel the same way about Polo mints and Doughnuts?

Tagyoureit · 16/02/2025 09:41

I love these pizzas!! I order 1 every time I go.

Not only is calorie controlled, it's also the price.

A pizza and side salad would cost £23 in my local PE and be around 1200 calories, a leggera cost £16 and is around 600 caloties.

So why would I pay £7 more for a pizza I won't finish?

But here's an idea, if you don't like them, don't order one!

TheLionandAlbert · 16/02/2025 09:41

That’s what I order when I go. 🤷‍♀️

Quite a big assumption though. And a bit silly of PE to limit its market to the car-restaurant-car-home market, particularly given where many of them are located...

It's curious how trenchant people are against the concept of people welcoming the idea of being able to order the amount of food they want!

(There is plenty wrong with leftover pizza that's been on A Journey, particularly if the pizza was halfway decent to start with so the crust doesn't have the structural integrity of a suburban semi, but that's probably another thread.)

outofofficeagain · 16/02/2025 09:45

As someone who often leaves the crusts I find this concept insane.

But each to their own. Presumably plenty of people order it.

Ha, I did imply that leftover pizza that's been half eaten with a knife and fork in a restaurant, then on a bit of a commute, wasn't necessarily a better option than just ordering the amount you fancy.

YouMustBeTheWeasleys · 16/02/2025 09:46

They have done these for years but I also don’t get them. You get the worst bit of the pizza - there isn’t enough topping!

EnterFunnyNameHere · 16/02/2025 09:50

I wouldn't order them - not least because whenever I've had anything labelled a salad there it's all bloody rocket and nothing else. But I think they are good because they don't look like you're having a meagre meal in comparison to others at your table.

LostGhost · 16/02/2025 09:50

Mysterian · 16/02/2025 00:38

Yes. Silly old me suggesting they do smaller pizzas. What was i thinking?!

My new suggestion is they do the pizzas as shown in the picture but with the outer 3 inches removed.

You can order a kids pizza if you want a smaller one. That's what I typically do every time I go in there, they're usually fairly accommodating with whatever toppings you want.

saltandvinegarchipsticks · 16/02/2025 09:57

I’d order this as I’m not a big pizza lover but I do prefer the crusts so it’d work for me.

littlestrawberryhat · 16/02/2025 10:01

I always order this because I like to control my calories…

zingally · 16/02/2025 10:08

Seems weird to be getting upset about something Pizza Express have been doing since at least the mid-00s.
I remember the day I first met my sisters partner and he took us both out for dinner here, and accidentally ordered one of these, and was a bit embarrassed. I was 20-21 at this time, so this would have been 2004/2005.

LlynTegid · 16/02/2025 10:11

Unless you live in a small town or community, I expect other pizza providers are available.

Vote with your feet OP. Not all companies provide sensible things.

hazelnutvanillalatte · 16/02/2025 09:31

They've done this since I was a child lol it's like getting angry at the third bun in a Big Mac. Twas ever thus

Don't get me started on that.

Hoppinggreen · 16/02/2025 10:14

Gross
The hot pizza will be touching the cold salad

User1786 · 16/02/2025 10:19

Love the Pizza express Leggera pizzas. As much as I’d love a whole pizza it’s too many calories for me so the Leggera is perfect. The middle cut out makes it look bigger on your plate so less sense of missing out. Love salad with pizza and love the crusts! It’s great to have the option

TagSplashMaverick · 16/02/2025 11:36

They’re really good and mean you don’t waste a load of pizza/don’t take in the insane number of calories in a pizza.
