AIBU to get angry about Pizza Express...

...pizzas with holes cut out and salad put in the middle? Why?! Why the fuck not just order a smaller pizza and get a side salad?!! Who get's the bits they cut out? Is there a secret menu? Are the 'holes' what prince andrew eats when he goes?
For something that doesn't concern me as I'd never order one it does make me quite unreasonably angry. In fact my dander levels have been drastically elevated since I saw the menu on Thursday.

(Although it does look like the chef enjoyed making it VERY much!😮)

AIBU to get angry about Pizza Express...

I like these, but I’m sure the salad used to be better. Didn’t it used to have cucumber and tomato and possibly red onion too?

Oh dear. That little wheel just isn’t turning today, is it?

At no point have I said that I don’t understand the concept of taking leftovers home. Neither have I suggested it’s on a par with climbing Kilimanjaro or splitting the atom in terms of difficulty level.

However, OP seems to think ordering a full pizza and only eating half of it is a better idea that ordering a dish that actually equates to half a pizza. To me, it IS a faff to order something you don’t actually want and take half of it home when you could just order the pizza and salad option the OP objects to so much. As I’ve already pointed out, not everyone will be going straight home from somewhere like Pizza Express. It’s a start of the night/quick bite before the cinema or theatre type place for many. I for one wouldn’t want to be carrying a pizza box about all night when I could just eat the one that comes with no middle.

Yeah, in a toss up between "holding on to the rail on the Tube with one hand while a pizza slides around a box I'm clutching in the other"/"walking home carrying half a box of pizza"/"I wonder how everyone else in the theatre will feel about the half-warm pizza I've wedged under my seat I hope no one stands on it" and "actually ordering the amount of food I want to eat", the latter will win every time...

Still, I guess some people can't conceive of other existences!

I don't even usually consider this option as I generally have a salad at PE but I'm amused by the lengths some people will go to to decry it.

PeanutsArentNuts · 16/02/2025 08:51

Oh no, giving people choices!

Also, where have you been for the last 16 years?

Why is it sad if you just want a smaller meal on that occasion? I find a whole pizza can be far too much sometimes especially if I fancy dessert.

That's why you order a whole pizza eat half and ask for a box to take the rest home in then you can still have your dessert

Cyclingmummy1 · 16/02/2025 08:53

They are my favourite 😍

ChampagneLassie · 16/02/2025 08:56

I used to order these, thought it’s a great idea. I found an ordinary pizza too big and I love salad. Found it perfect. Since becoming a BF mother my appetite has increased considerably and I can easily demolish a whole pizza now!

TodayIsTheGreatest · 16/02/2025 08:56

Pizzas have shrunk in size in total at pizza express so it also maybe less of a challenge these days., when I was a kid they dangled off the sides of the plate and were for sharing.

Red onion infecting my salad would not be an improvement!

If I could choose which bit of a pizza to eat it would be the middle bit - I think they should cut the crusts off and put salad round the outside instead! They've done away with the best bit.

Twiglets1 · 16/02/2025 09:06

Convolvulus · 16/02/2025 08:49

I rather agree. It would be better if the salad was replacing the crust.

That would be perfect. Crustless pizza with a small salad on the side.

Annettecurtaintwitcher · 16/02/2025 09:10

These are a good option for lots of people who want to eat out without over doing it. Weird thing to be angry about, just don’t order it.

Bunnycat101 · 16/02/2025 09:18

I often get those and really like them. Just because you don’t like them doesn’t mean there isn’t a gap in the market that they’ve filled. I know loads of people who get them.

If you want a pizza that's half the calories have half a pizza, but just the outer 3 inches is a stupidly impracticable way of doing it.

No, it isn't. It's a very practical way of neatly fitting a smaller pizza and a salad on the same plate.

Otherwise you'd need two plates, one for the pizza and one for the salad (more washing up). Or you'd need a larger plate with space for the pizza and the salad next to it.

Corknut · 16/02/2025 09:20

these have been around for ages and although I haven’t been to pizza express for years, they are nice and it’s my business if I want one and why! Order a full size one and move on

Hollietree · 16/02/2025 09:22

Mysterian · 15/02/2025 23:54

They should sell small pizzas. It would be my first executive order.

They do sell small pizzas - the exact ones you are complaining about 🤣 You just don’t like the shape of them. Why would a smaller round pizza with salad on the side be more acceptable……. But the exact same amount of pizza in a circle shape with salad in the middle isn't acceptable? They are the exact same thing. Surely it’s a USP thing, something a bit different to other places, looks pretty. I’m certain when they cut out the dough in the middle it will be rolled into a dough ball, no wastage.

Ive ordered this several times. Its great.

Often people go out for drinks after a meal. No one wants to be schlepping round bars with a box of half eaten pizza in their bag.

Comefromaway · 16/02/2025 09:25

Leftover boxes would be confiscated at many theatres!

I don’t like pizzas but my husband loves these. Pizza crust is his favourite.

It's a lot cheaper for them to sell it like that. The outer edge is more dough than anything else and the salad is cheaper than all the sauce and toppings.

But, they convince people they are being "good" to them by offering it.

The point people keep missing here is that although the middle with all the cheese and toppings is tastier for most people, the crust/edge is much less calorific than the middle. They are marketing it on low calories.

AngelsWithSilverWings · 16/02/2025 09:28

This is what I always order when I go there. Perfect sized meal with a glass of red. The caramelised onion and goats cheese is lovely.

Yes, there is little I enjoy more than a slightly squashed thrice-handled pizza with toppings that have slid to the corner of the box and then been redistributed.

Except if it's half a thrice-handled pizza that's been on an onward trip to the cinema before the bus and walk home.

Definitely superior to ordering the amount of food that I wanted and eating it in the place I'd gone to for the purpose of eating.

Yes that would be an improvement but would increase calories so would bother some people I expect . I wish the salads were better.

They've done this since I was a child lol it's like getting angry at the third bun in a Big Mac. Twas ever thus

Well that's fine for them but the people who are going home after can take it. I've often done this especially as I have 4 kids eating out with me so they don't always finish their food.
