to call my cockerpoo a poodle?

I rescued him last year. I did health testing via a DNA sample as I have done with my other rescues in the past. It can give you an idea of what you might need to prepare for in the future.

Anyway, it also tells you the breed make up and turns out he is 82% poodle which does not surprise me.

WIBU to say he is a poodle when people ask about him? He looks like a poodle, acts like a poodle and turns out is overwhelmingly poodle...🤷🏼‍♀️

I'm just so acutely aware of all the doodle hate and judgement 😭

(obvs his vet record and insurance has the breed make up)

Just say he's a poodle cross, that's what we do.

Londonrach1 · 14/02/2025 08:04

Just say poodle cross

Jellycatspyjamas · 14/02/2025 08:22

I have a cockerpoo, and have no shame in saying that’s what he is. Why worry about hat other people think of you/your dog.

PiastriThePastry · 14/02/2025 08:24

Call him what you like, no one really cares that much, in the nicest way possible. I’ve a ‘cockapoo’ and a ‘cavapoo’ but just say they’re poodle crosses if anyone ever asks, as a pp says, that’s just what they are! That being said, they normally then ask ‘crossed with what?’ so may as well have just said to start with 😂

SernieBanders · 14/02/2025 08:24

How about you call
it a dog?

what I say every time someone asks me what the four legged thing with a tail on a lead in the park is.

Kuretake · 14/02/2025 08:25

Bit of a mix mostly poodle is what I'd say I think.

RubberyChicken · 14/02/2025 08:28

Surely it's a cross-breed or mongrel, but there's nothing wrong with that

Lanawashington · 14/02/2025 08:32

I've got what is known as a 'springador' but for some reason I absolutely hate that name and I don't know why! He looks like a lab with very big ears and a tail that never stops, so I just say that he's a lab cross if people ask

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 14/02/2025 08:45

If it is mainly poodle, I think that should be the primary name, so why not call it a poomuddle or a poocock?

biscuitsandbooks · 14/02/2025 08:51

I doubt the dog cares what breed you refer to him as.

HellNoWay · 14/02/2025 08:55

I used to have a poodle cross and found the 'poodle' part quite embarrassing so always emphasised the 'cross' part of it or just said 'hes a mix'!

Not sure why you want to call him poodle to be honest! Cockerpoo is a tad better but not much!

If it was me I'd say 'poodle cross' or if he almost doesn't quite look too poodley, I'd just say 'mix'!

love poomuddle!!

CarobyBlobs · 14/02/2025 08:59

Nobody is going to demand to see his dna results - just say poodle cross

What's embarrassing about owning a poodle? Confused

MrsPerfect12 · 14/02/2025 09:03

I have a Cockapoo and only ever met one twat that corrected me to mongrel. If your dog is a Cockapoo it's a Cockapoo.

ExpressCheckout · 14/02/2025 09:04

Poodle or Poodle Cross. Mongrel if it's an older person you are speaking with. You choose.

Cavapoo etc. basically means 'mongrel with a £2500 mark-up' 😂

Chuchoter · 14/02/2025 09:04

My Sister's grandson was trying to describe to me a dog he had met which was most likely a Cockapoo and he called it a 'Poodly Doodly'!

I think that sounds much nicer!

Tessasanderson · 14/02/2025 09:10

Whats wrong with Mongrel?

I have a schnauzer and schnoodle. The schnoodle is always referred to as a mongrel. He is a mix and thats what a mixed dog has been referred to for decades. He is twice the dog of the purebred in physical abilities and intelligence (Our schnauzer makes up for it in 100% love) but he is nothing more than a mixed breed mongrel.

Edited

I take it you saw that other thread as well!! 😁

OP - just call him what he is! People don’t like poodle-crosses 99.9% of the time because of the owners behaviour (not training their dog, preaching its hypoallergenic etc) rather than because of the dog itself

Ellie1015 · 14/02/2025 09:14

I am not much of a dog person but of all the friends and family dogs i know the loveliest and best behaved ones are a cavapoo and a Cockerpoo.

Call your dog a poodle if you want, I would rather say cockerpoo and identify any judgy folk more easily so I can avoid.

moonshinepoursthroughmywindow · 14/02/2025 09:27

I thought a mongrel was a mix of three or more breeds - if it's two, wouldn't that be a cross? I've never had a dog so I quite literally don't have a dog in this fight, but I thought that was the usual terminology.)

I don't quite see how a dog can be exactly 82% poodle if it has the usual number of parents and ancestors, but I think poodle cross would be a good phrase to use in the circumstances.

tropicalroses · 14/02/2025 09:32

Mongrel, mixed breed, poodle mix?

'Mongrel' is usually (or used to be) used when you didn't really know the heritage of the dog. 'Cross' usually means that you do know. But many older folks tend to use the terms interchangeably.

'Designer' breeds mostly come under the term 'cross', presuming that the breeder is being honest, but they are still not pure-breeds in any true sense of the word despite being intentionally bred.

From ChatGPT:

Here’s a possible path:

  • First generation (Parent 1: 100% Poodle, Parent 2: 50% Poodle/50% another breed)
  • Second generation (Resulting offspring of Parent 1 and Parent 2, showing an average poodle genetic makeup of 75% poodle)
  • Third generation (Crossing one of the 75% poodle offspring with another dog that is 100% poodle, resulting in an 82% poodle offspring).
StormingNorman · 14/02/2025 09:55

It’s more embarrassing to want to fudge what your dog is than to say you have a cockerpoo.
