to call my cockerpoo a poodle?

I rescued him last year. I did health testing via a DNA sample as I have done with my other rescues in the past. It can give you an idea of what you might need to prepare for in the future.

Anyway, it also tells you the breed make up and turns out he is 82% poodle which does not surprise me.

WIBU to say he is a poodle when people ask about him? He looks like a poodle, acts like a poodle and turns out is overwhelmingly poodle...🤷🏼‍♀️

I'm just so acutely aware of all the doodle hate and judgement 😭

(obvs his vet record and insurance has the breed make up)

poodle cross breed or mongrel
we have a jackahuahua but to us he is Paddy Patch the mad mongrel

SemperIdem · 14/02/2025 11:13

You can say whatever you like, it’s not as though the person in question is going to call you a liar.

I have a bichon/poodle cross. A “poochon”, which sounds so ridiculous I can’t bring myself to say it aloud. So I just say bichon/poodle cross if people ask.

Kneeboobs · 14/02/2025 11:18

I'd need a photo to properly judge if you are BU or NBU.

TheTigerWhoCameToEatMyArsehole · 14/02/2025 11:19

My poodle cross jack Russell is actually called poodle that is his name 😂

WatchingTheClowns · 14/02/2025 11:23

It's impossible to have a bitch of one type (eg. Labrador) and a dog or another breed (e. Poodle) and come up with a new breed for the puppies - eg Labradoodle, Cockerpoo, Yorkiepoo, etc. They are mongrels.* *

Poodle or Poodle Cross. Mongrel if it's an older person you are speaking with. You choose.

Cavapoo etc. basically means 'mongrel with a £2500 mark-up' 😂

Edited

Age has nothing to do with logic.

theressomanytinafeysicouldbe · 14/02/2025 11:38

Where I come from its a mongrel or a 'heinz 57', years ago you wouldn't pay for a mongrel, now they are more expensive than purebred

If its 80% poodle, tell them she is a poodle cross

HellNoWay · 14/02/2025 08:56

love poomuddle!!

Actually, it could even be contracted to a 'puddle'!

Catza · 14/02/2025 11:42

You can just do what I do and say "my dog is an arsehole".

TheRealMaudOHara · 14/02/2025 12:03

I have a poodle and everyone assumes she's a cockerpoo anyway unless she's just had her hair cut. Call yours what you like! I usually get quite a positive reaction if I say she's a pure poodle as you don't get as many!

I think of all the poodle crosses as wankerdoodles.

OccasionalHope · 14/02/2025 12:23

I would just say he’s mostly poodle.

Grammarnut · 14/02/2025 12:37

DD has a cockerpoo. He is somewhat demented in the way cocker spaniels are. Poodle bit makes him non-moulting which is why he was chosen - grooming costs, however. I have a poochon - which is a poodle x bichon frise, mostly bichon frise and he dances! Say your dog is a poodle cross and if queried say the cross is cocker spaniel - no-one judges these days and many approve of the new crosses, which in fifty years time will be breeds of their own. How does anyone think new breeds of anything arise? Crossing, that's how.

OrlandointheWilderness · 14/02/2025 12:40

Crossbreed is breed 1 X breed 2. It's a mix of two. Mongrel is a mix of 3 or more.
I'd just say he was a crossbreed or a poodle cross!

Herewith exhibit A of aforementioned doodle hate and judgement....

Just say "oh he's a rescue" so people know that you're a morally superior person

unsync · 14/02/2025 12:50

He's not a poodle though, he's a cross breed. Poodle implies pure breed/pedigree. There are a couple of poodles that live on the same road as me, a Standard and a Toy, cracking looking dogs.

ThinWomansBrain · 14/02/2025 12:51

seriously - how many people actually ask what breed he is?
I talk to lots of people with dogs - or mostly the dogs (but always ask first)
I might ask what their name is, how old they are - but very very rarely-ish what breed - mostly only if they are very unusual looking - a dog I see regularly is a spanish water dog with dreadlocks.
Surely if he looks poodle, most people will assume that - if anyone does ask, just say mostly poodle.

ThinWomansBrain · 14/02/2025 12:57

"If its 80% poodle, tell them she is a poodle cross"

From the OP, the dog is male, don't turn it into yet another trans-bashing thread 😂

I wouldnt call it hate. I have a doodle and think i would prefer to refer to it as a wankerdoodle too. Imagine the person who asked the questions face. It would be brilliant.

MrsPerfect12 · 14/02/2025 09:03

I have a Cockapoo and only ever met one twat that corrected me to mongrel. If your dog is a Cockapoo it's a Cockapoo.

Its a mongrel
I might be a twat but your dog is a mongrel, nothing wrong with that but its a fact.

I thought it was a funny comment. You may be a little oversensitive?

yumyum33 · 14/02/2025 15:58

I have a pedigree toy poodle. That's a poodle. You don't have a poodle. You have a poodle cross.

canyon2000 · 14/02/2025 16:01

He's a bitzer!

canyon2000 · 14/02/2025 16:04

I did meet a wanky crossbreed dog owner once - I asked if his dog was a labradoodle and he said very grandly " Oh no, she's a Golden Doodle" like a) I'm supposed to know what the hell that is and b) I should be really impressed!
