Whose the poorest and Why?

Me (only child). I'm poorer than my parents were, mainly because I'm a spender - and no, my parents weren't the dreadful "boomers", that's me!!! I also worked in office jobs all my life - because I had no interest in a career and don't have an ambitious bone in my body - and will be renting forever. Being single for most of my life, and going through separation after a short marriage didn't help. Do I care? - no.

DancingButterflies · 12/02/2025 21:02

Probably me. I have one child and both my husband and I have professional jobs on a good wage, but I don’t save a penny except to blow tens out thousands on long haul fancy holidays every year.
But I’m having the time of my life whilst I’m healthy enough to enjoy myself.

Small family, I think we are all roughly equal.

That being the case, what prompted you to find out about other people's circumstances?

I actually think I need a bit of this energy. I save a bit obsessively I should unclench and have some holidays!

Pelot · 13/02/2025 11:27

@Elsvieta 'Arts' jobs are so poorly paid. A finance husband is very useful if that's your passion!

JHound · 13/02/2025 11:31

One of my worthless uncles.

Because he is worthless.

My DS she is loaded with money, no children and no pets. Married recently after living with a married, well off, man for 20 odd years whilst he was still married with kids. She is really poor in my opinion.

Sounds like he was married in name only of he was living with your sister?

JHound · 13/02/2025 11:36

He would probably say I was the poorest one because I am the only one of the female grandchildren not to have children (he has a real issue with women without children - he thinks we have failed at life.)

Emiliaswrath · 13/02/2025 11:40

Me, I work for the NHS. My sister earns more money, but also has a mountain of debt while I don't so 🤷

Astrak · 13/02/2025 11:46

Me. I've got a cat and a horse. Their lavish and luxurious lifestyles destroys both my pensions. I can no longer work as I am disabled, but they provide love and good company, so I don't begrudge it.

CortieTat · 13/02/2025 11:54

DD. She has saved and recently bought herself a tablet so now she has 31,57 Swedish crowns on her account. She’s also asset-poor because the other child has some good pokemon cards and she doesn’t collect them.

ForgettingMeNot · 13/02/2025 11:55

I'm a single parent so I'm the poor black sheep of my family. Not at all how I expected my life to go but my dickhead of an couldn't keep his trousers on

luckylavender · 13/02/2025 12:03

Why?

user1471516498 · 13/02/2025 12:11

My family live in the north, and our 4 bed detached house is worth less than my brother's terraced house in the SE. He earns more, but we have a much higher standard of living as our outgoings are so much lower. (We have a lot of equity as we moved from the SE to N Yorkshire 20 odd years ago.) TLDR - its complicated.

discdiscsnap · 13/02/2025 13:09

Dd who's in uni

Greebosmum · 13/02/2025 13:28

Me. Made a series of really stupid decisions when young. My brother and sister were very sensible and cash focused.

I believe though that I have had far more fun and am happier than either of them so I don't know whose life turned out better in the end.

GreengagePie · 13/02/2025 15:03

@Simplynotsimple "My mother is currently unemployed and penniless due to being dead. I’m sure this won’t stop Liz Kendall trying to set up a ‘return to the workplace’ scheme for layabouts like herself though, so hopefully she’ll be back earning soon."

😂😂

Sorry to laugh about your dearly departed Mum but that response is a real pearler !

Xmasxrackers · 13/02/2025 17:55

Me. My sister and brother are 15+ years older than me, both bought houses very cheap, both married well. I won’t ever afford a house

Alexaremovethenotifications · 13/02/2025 17:58

My immediate family….ME! Our joint income is 108k per year. We have three kids. My brother is single, has no kids and earns 65k and my sister and her husband have 2 kids but earn 160k combined.

However on the grand scheme of things I seem to have a happier marriage and I really do enjoy my life. I know we could be worse off, I don’t give much thought to it. We’re healthy and happy and that’s the main thing. If my husband became unemployed for any reason, I would still love him and believe he feels the same so I think that’s the real value in the relationship.

Greenshed · 13/02/2025 18:09

I’ve no idea, as I don’t know the financial ins and outs of my siblings. Neither do I wish to, it has absolutely nothing to do with me.

Howmanywishescanastargive · 13/02/2025 18:17

Day to day cash poor - my sister
Time poor - me
Long term asset poor - probably my sister as she had kids younger than me so made better savings/pension decisions. I might catch up over he next 20 yrs, depending on how my investments work out, but she got 'lucky' if that's the right word in the timings of right but scheme and house prices rising.

Nain5 · 13/02/2025 18:18

My cat doesn't have a penny to his name.😂

Single50something · 13/02/2025 18:29

Me. Single/totally solo parent. Earn ok money but running a house with one income is super tough. Not many seem to realise that oddly.
Family will ask where my money goes but rent and bills are crippling on one income. 2 incomes paying similar bills makes them much better off. If I was able.to half all my bills I'd be nearly 1k better off each month :(

Melodramat1c · 13/02/2025 18:53

Meecrowahvey · 12/02/2025 14:21

One of my sisters. She decided to have an absurd amount of children to a pathetic , lazy, abusive, unemployed dickhead.

Talk about putting a relationship over kids wellbeing
