To ask how we stop dangerous cyclists

Why do the most dangerous ones wear those stupid little headcams too? YOU'RE the problem, guy.

Or identifying number plates, come to think of it.

Honestly with shared paths you'd think pedestrians would be cyclist aware but no, they walk in the middle of the track with earpods in, and are totally unaware . . . so let's talk about personal responsibility . . .

The way they play ignorant when I ting the bell at them three times AND say 'excuse me, please'. If they ignore all that, I'm happy to brush past them. I know you can hear me!

crankytoes · 11/02/2025 18:26

I've recently bought a camera for my bike and joke it's so my family will know who killed me. If you knew how little room SOME motorists give me then you'd understand. Not all cyclists are dangerous, some of us just want to commute safely, but some motorists don't believe we deserve to.

But the OP isn't talking about dangerous drivers. We face a process to charge them. This thread is about dangerous cyclists which there are some. And how to prevent them?

This is why I stick to shared cycle pedestrian paths and cycle lanes, and sometimes even actual pedestrian paths. I'm not becoming a vegetable because an angry bricklayer can't control his emotions.

I’m sure you’d be fine with cars beeping their horn at you and brushing past you?

Hankunamatata · 11/02/2025 18:28

I'd love more cycle lanes. Iv got one 90% of way home. Last half a mile is uphill and corners either I nearly get taken off by cars or they dangerously pass me. Not everyone can cycle superspeeds

I don't cycle on roads unless there's a cycle path.

Bit of nuance between mowing down a cyclist than catching the bottom of someone's jacket on my bike handle 😂

MathsMum3 · 11/02/2025 18:12

Motorists kill 5 people a day on UK roads, but you think cyclists are the problem??

There is the capacity for more than one problem you know.
Just because motorists can kill that doesn't absolve cyclists from any responsibility nor does it mean cyclists shouldn't be held to account when they cause injury

prayforpillsthatwontaffectmeonthemorningafter · 11/02/2025 18:30

Cyclists: societies biggest problem 😂

Dick move and if you end up getting caught and injuring yourself you'd deserve it

My city recently built some brilliant new cycle paths away from the roads. However, they themselves have now been taken over by delivery guys on modified electric bikes, going far too fast, wrong direction, cutting in and out etc. So a lot of cyclists have now gone back on to the roads, just antagonises drivers as they see a perfectly good cycle lane not being used. Don't know what the solution is tbh.

SocksShmocks · 11/02/2025 18:34

I’m a pedestrian (mostly, day to day) and a car driver sometimes. I don’t ride a bike.

There’s a busy junction outside the tube station near the office where I work, including a cycle lane (cycle superhighway). As a rule vehicles obey the lights. Sometimes pedestrians cross half the lane (to a substantial island, not just hovering on the dotted line) when they can see there’s no traffic. Unfortunately it’s quite common for cyclists to cross the junction when pedestrians have the green man to cross (and believe me that green man doesn’t last long). I’m sorry to say when I’m a pedestrian at that crossing it’s the cyclists that worry me most. There is a significant minority who act like vehicles when it suits them and pedestrians when it suits them.

Having said that I do recognise that being a cyclist must feel very vulnerable in traffic too. Especially with large vehicles like buses and lorries turning left. But the cyclist behaviour I’ve seen above doesn’t help their reputation .

Well, I think the dog bashing ones have been done to death recently, so we've circled back to cyclists. Will be horse poo on the road again soon.

TheEllisGreyMethod · 11/02/2025 18:42

Loads of terrible cyclists and loads of terrible drivers on the road. Loads of terrible pedestrians too.

CuteOrangeElephant · 11/02/2025 18:45

Just copy the Dutch.

Unfortunately that means massively investing in infrastructure and rethinking the entire way city planning works so it's never going to happen.

Funnywonder · 11/02/2025 18:45

Cyclists can be absolutely selfish and take up all the road while, especially when there's 3 of them next to each other for no bloody reason.

God, I'm fed up hearing this. I am not a cyclist, but I don't think it's difficult to understand that riding 2 or 3 abreast is safer for the cyclists. This way they are a wider body and thus become the equivalent of a slower moving vehicle. You don't honk your horn and take stupid risks to squeeze past a digger or a tractor, so why do it to cyclists who are much more vulnerable? Squeezing them into the gutter just so that you can get down the road a bit faster. We all have to share the roads. Have a bit of patience FFS.

How do you see my hearing aid from that far away and when approaching at that speed?

More to the point, how do you know that I'm not wearing my hearing aid because the battery's run out?

This is a really horrible attitude. Deaf/hard of hearing people exist.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 11/02/2025 18:53

I work near Waterloo, and used to work near bank. How there are hundreds of accidents every day I have no idea. It is chaos. The electric line / forest bikes are just dangerous. Pedestrians and cyclists don't follow the lights.

The lesson is for the police to do their bloody job and confiscate these modified bikes on the grounds that they are illegal on public roads and cycle paths. The police here recently had one well-publicised day in which they confiscated some of these bikes, but it was only for one day and doesn’t seem to have deterred the riders of illegal bikes. It needs some sustained action.

ForPlumReader · 11/02/2025 18:59

There are irresponsible road users all over, be it pedestrians, cyclists, or drivers. Bad drivers kill other people, including cyclists and pedestrians. Cyclists and pedestrians are more likely to get themselves killed.

I walk the school run every morning, it isn't cyclists that I am in fear of as I cross (at traffic lights) and then again (with no lights) nearer the school. I'd go as far as to say most drivers go through red lights, often after the green man appears, go through zebra crossings, speed, drive after mounting the pavement to park, ignore the cycle box, etc etc. Meanwhile I'm trying to teach children how to get to school safely. Cyclists are the least of my worry.

UnimaginableWindBird · 11/02/2025 19:01

In 2923 1, 624 people were killed by motorists. 4 people were killed by cyclists. .

This is slightly more than the number of people (3) killed by cows and less than the number of people (5) killed by trees.

So to do the most good, it's probably more important to look at tackling the issue of dangerous trees which are consistently responsible for more death and injuries than cyclists.
