To think billionaires shouldn’t exist?

No one earns a billion through hard work alone - it’s exploitation. AIBU to think billionaires shouldn’t exist in a fair society?

They’re leaving the Netherlands and - strangely - Saudi Arabia too.

Where are they going?

Commonsenseisnotsocommon · 11/02/2025 12:02

Oh ok so let's all live in a commie state then. Let me guess though, you want to be in charge of it? 🥱

FallenRaingel · 11/02/2025 12:03

@ThisIcyWriter Judith Faulkner - Google her. Your view is narrow minded and wrong.

Verv · 11/02/2025 12:03

Sigh. Wealth stimulates employment and the economy.
The only issue i have with billionaires is that I am not one!

BIossomtoes · 11/02/2025 12:03

Kendodd · 11/02/2025 12:00

I don’t know. Somewhere with a virtually non existent tax regime I imagine. It seems the more money you have the more you’re desperate to hang on to it.

I don't object to billionaires. But I do object to greedy billionaires. It made me sick when I read about Rishi Sunaks wife trying to reduce her tax bill by being a non dom. Shameful.

Edited

But isn’t that the Op’s point? No one becomes a billionaire by being straightforward and honest . They are all greedy and will spend a fortune to sneak round the rules. Or they’ll just ignore the rules and do what they want regardless .

They might make some charity donations to help with PR, or to take advantage of tax breaks - but it’s not “genuine” charity. It’s all about their status and being seen to be a “great person”.

None of them are good people, they are all greedy and self interested. Otherwise they wouldn’t be billionaires.

Huckyfell · 11/02/2025 12:05

Agix · 11/02/2025 09:14

Agreed. To amass that amount of money, you have to have exploited your employees. Why weren't they paid more for the wealth they helped create?

No one needs that amount of money. No one works hard enough by themselves to justify that amount of money. Even with a bright idea, the actual money has come from the labour of others.

It's disgusting really.

Of course. These people should refuse to work for successful companies and go and work for unsuccessful ones. Win win all round

First post nails it 😂

Nope, first post is idiotic.

I despair when any sensible conversation about the horrendous impacts of wealth inequality in the world is immediately derailed by 'oh you wanna be a COMMUNIST do you?!?!!!!!! You want us to give away everything and live in GULAGS do you!?!!h f jrgfj!?xmfhf!f?!s'

Nothing wrong with making (and spending) money. But absolutely nobody needs to be a billionaire, hoarding more wealth than they could ever feasibly spend, whilst others are hungry and homeless.

Starlightstarbright4 · 11/02/2025 12:07

Honestly I think this place gets crazier by the day yesterday we should make eating meat illegal today no one can become a billionaire ? I mean what happens to them who are ? Do they not allowed to make any more money till they are below the billion?

BooomShakeTheRoom · 11/02/2025 12:07

jeaux90 · 11/02/2025 09:11

Quite right OP let's all live in a society where everyone gets the same, gets treated the same, has the same money. Because no exploitation or corruption happens in communist countries.

Did you have to feedback to OP in such an arsy and sarcastic way?

You could have made your point in so many other, nicer, ways.

What I don't understand is why they would bother moving to save money. You're a billionaire, how is this not enough money for you? Why would you care about tax, you won't even notice that money gone and it'll make zero difference to your lifestyle.
I guess it's a mindset that I will just never be able to get my head around.

I don't know as unfortunately I don't have massive wealth.
Maybe it's principle and fairness? Maybe they go where they feel welcome. Thats definitely not the UK currently. Italy are offering non doms very favourable terms.

Barbadossunset · 11/02/2025 12:10

Isn't the main thing that the charity benefits? Though I know plenty of charities won’t take donations from certain businesses and individuals on ethical grounds.

Maybe those countries have also created a hostile environment to actively repellent wealth? That's exactly what we're doing in the UK. Not good if you like public services though.

raspberryberet7 · 11/02/2025 12:28

completely agree

GreenYellowBrown · 11/02/2025 12:28

You wouldn’t be saying that if you were a billionaire 🙄

LucyMonth · 11/02/2025 12:30

My FIL is very close to being a billionaire. Very close.

I promise he pays less tax than anyone in this thread. He has money hidden all over the world. He’s paid for passports from corrupt countries so he can hide his wealth there. & he is a “normal” billionaire. He hasn’t made his money by selling weapons to militants or something horrible. He wasn’t a corrupt man before he made money. Now he thinks all of you are pathetic scroungers who just don’t work hard enough & if you did you’d be billionaires too. So why anyone licks the boots of billionaires is beyond me. They barely see the rest of us as human beings.

I think the current political situation in the US should be enough to make anyone realise that unchecked wealth leads to unchecked power & that is never a good thing.

*repel not repellent

TizerorFizz · 11/02/2025 12:31

It is a ludicrous position to be anti wealth creators. We need wealth to remain in this country. They are often employers after all. We don’t have Musk and Bezos. I do want to encourage philanthropy and not just look at wealth from a position of jelousy. I would prefer a model where tax is lowered for much greater philanthropy. The Victorians understood this concept but where is the Richard Branson hospital? We don’t expect sufficient participation from the mega rich but I don’t want them to go. I want more of them to make a difference to society.

Saudi Arabia? Not renowned for hostility to wealth or high quality public services. Why aren’t they leaving Scandinavia if your premise is correct?

No idea blossom, Saudi is bloomin hot though

Copernicus321 · 11/02/2025 12:33

Not all bad, Bill Gates has given away 100 billion.

TaraRhu · 11/02/2025 12:36

No one should have that much personal wealth. It should be taxed at 80%!

I'm not a communist but there should be a limit to how much you can earn as much as how little.

Barbadossunset · 11/02/2025 12:10

Nope. Jimmy Saville raised millions for charity which lead to him being given privileges he would never have been given otherwise.

Billionaires often have unearned influence in the charities they donate to and/or their donations do more harm than good as they choose charities with harmful agendas. For example religious ideology. Pseudoscientific causes.

If the billionaires paid the appropriate taxes then the charities wouldn’t need to exist.

Naunet · 11/02/2025 09:49

So JK Rowling didn't earn her money and exploited people?! 😆 I guess she's not technically a billionaire, what with giving so much money to charity...

lol she's exploiting parents of young kids who now are pressured to buy enending Harry Potter merchandise, films, books, studio tours etc.

ConstellationofUs · 11/02/2025 12:38

Taylor Swift has got there through hard work. She’s also generous. Maybe it’s only male billionaires we need to worry about ?
