What would you think if you saw dogs in their own pram?

I have 3 aging dogs. The maltese is 12, the toy poodle is 11 and the Chihuahua is 14. I inherited them from my grandmother who passed a few years back. I have always loved them but they are absolutely adored by myself and children since we brought them home.

The thing is that toy poodle has always needed carrying after a very short while on walks but the other two have been quite happy to carry on. But the chihuahua is now slowing down. I know they enjoy being out (still get excited when I mention walkies etc). The Maltese can go on for much longer. And it also does me the world of good being out the house. Right now I end up carrying the dogs as and when they get tired. Dh has suggested a stroller but I don’t know why I find the idea really embarrassing. I know I shouldn’t care what people think but I do.

Be honest, what would you think if you saw a woman pushing two dogs in a dog pram/stroller?

So sorry you had to witness something so horrific @Devilsmommy 💐
There are truly amazing dogs too though, they far outnumber the bad ones and they make the world a better place❤

I wished I had one for my old girl in the last few months. She loved being out with us but her legs were starting to go and I had to leave her at home while I walked the young dog. I felt so guilty and really wanted something to push her around in. She would have loved being with us more. In the event, by the time I found something suitable (she was quite a big dog) we were down to her last few days and I knew it was imminent so I didn’t get one.

I wouldn’t think anything of it, except good on you for ensuring they are still getting to enjoy being out.

HotPotatoesies · 10/02/2025 19:45

Surely if there is one dog walking alongside the assumption would be that the other two dogs are old or unwell and therefore being pushed in the pram while third dog enjoys a bit of a walk!?

Do whatever you need to do :) I do get your concern though, other people can be incredibly judgemental! I was questioned why my (very tall) child was in a pram instead of walking and I said because he's 14 months old and hasn't yet learned to walk 🙄😂

Redflowertable · 10/02/2025 19:45

I don't have a dog, I don't like dogs, when i see people pushing their dogs in prams, I'm sorry, but I think the owner is off their rocker. Although I am happy the dog is not jumping up at me, sniffing me and getting under my feet as I'm trying to get on with my dog free day in peace

It had never occurred to me untill i read the thread that the dog might be too old or ill to walk as far as the owner wanted to walk. I have to say even knowing that now, it doesn't fully offset my perception of the precarious perch the owner has on their rocker.

Thank you @Dogsandcatsandamousetoo . I still have nightmares about it to this day. I just can't get along with dogs and since having my DS 2 years ago I'm just on constant alert when there are dogs in the vicinity. Especially as the area I live in is swimming in all kinds of dogs 😂

MumonabikeE5 · 10/02/2025 19:46

I would get a cart rather than a pram .because I am vain .

Hedgerow2 · 10/02/2025 19:48

@Devilsmommy - that's so awful 😞. I'm very sorry you had that experience.

Devilsmommy · 10/02/2025 19:50

Thank you @Hedgerow2 😊

MagnoliaGirlie · 10/02/2025 19:55

I used to think it was utterly ridiculous... until I got my own dog. I would do the same for him in a heartbeat! I also met a woman on my dog walk, a few years ago, who did that for the same reason as you, and I thought it was just brilliant! They all (the lady and 2 dogs) had a daily walk together they could all enjoy and manage 🥰

100A · 10/02/2025 19:55

I often see little dogs in prams. Especially in Chelsea. My neighbour has one. It's fine as long as they're happy.

Unicornsandprincesses · 10/02/2025 19:57

we used one with our old dog, it was a godsend

XenoBitch · 10/02/2025 19:59

They tend to be carrying elderly/disabled dogs, so it is a lovely thing the dog can still get out and enjoy the fresh air.
My best friend had one for her dog once her arthritis made it too difficult for her to do her usual walks. She would be in the pram there and back, but be able to get out for sniffs, checking peemails etc, then off to a cafe for a sausage and a nap 😋

JMSA · 10/02/2025 20:00

I honestly think about it in a very positive way. So 'aah, it's really nice that the owner and her wee dog are able to get out and about, and not be cooped up at home.'
When my Shih Tzu is no longer able to manage, I'll get one for sure. He has always been quite clingy, so I know he'd prefer it to being left behind!

potatopaws · 10/02/2025 20:04

My thoughts would probably go something like this:

”Is it a dog in the pram? yes it is a dog! Cute dog. Why is it in a pram? Looks kind of old, he must be tired. Sweet they still take him out with the others. My sister would roll her eyes at that. My friend would totally push her dog in a pram though. Wish I had a dog. I will have one when I retire. It will be good company. I wonder if a dog would eat its owner if they die? Probably not immediately. What about cats? I must google this when I get home”

There was a recent news story about a woman was eaten by her pugs when she died at home. The rescue my dog is from also had a pair of dogs surrendered that had eaten their owner. By 'eaten' though, it is usually just meant a few nibbles.
There is a YouTube channel I follow that is a mortician who answers questions that people send in. Someone did ask about pets eating owners. Apparently, ear lobes, the end of your nose, and finger tips, are the first bits pets go for.

😱

I had one for my puppy so we could get her out and about before her injections and for a month afterwards as she couldn’t keep up with our other dog on walks. We took it to our local rescue’s charity shop after we finished with it.
No one cared, and I don’t think the majority of people knew it was a dog buggy anyway.

BogRollBOGOF · 10/02/2025 20:15

The first time I saw a dog in a (baby) pram was about 12 years ago and the owner had a sign on it saying something along the lines of "please don't laugh, I'm blind and elderly". It seems like a good idea for dogs who can no longer walk around for a good sniff. The idea has clearly caught on with specialist dog prams being quite common now.

I grew up with a large dog who had arthritis and in his last few years could only manage a little mooch to the corner for a sniff. He'd have needed a trolley of the style you get in DIY stores 😂

Dogsandcatsandamousetoo · 10/02/2025 20:17

This is a lovely thread, so nice to see how many truly care about their dogs' well-being and happiness. The pictures of the dogs in buggies are just adorable❤

I'm most definitely going to put my dogs in a buggy when they start having difficulties as they age, so that they can continue to enjoy life and sniff all the best sniffs. My smallest is fast approaching OAP status (older adorable pet).

I hope you get a buggy for your little dogs @Greypop , I think a buggy will enrich all your lives.🐾

BruFord · 10/02/2025 20:18

@XenoBitch I saw that sad story about the pugs who started eating their owner after she’d died.

My immediate thought was yes, DDog would definitely eat me when he got hungry enough. 😂

Itiswhysofew · 10/02/2025 20:18

I know someone who takes her little Shiatsu out in a doggy pushchair. His front paws didn't develop properly, so he's unable to walk on hard ground. She's very active, so takes him with her on her walks and he gets a little sniff around on the village green at the end of the walk. The kids get very excited when they see him coming along.

I also see a woman who's got about 5 Poms, and one of them gets wheeled around in a pushchair.

I think it's a lovely thing to do for your dog😁

admirible · 10/02/2025 20:26

you shouldn’t care what people think, it’s none of their business and anyway anyone who is not ok with elderly dogs going out in strollers is a bit of a cunt.

I have a lab… he’d have eaten me by 4:05 once he’d realised he’d missed his dinner at 4pm 🙈.

I also used to think that people with dogs in prams were a bit mad, but now I have one, I totally get it! They’d still enjoy the fresh air, smells and sounds.

Maverickess · 10/02/2025 20:27

I would think the dogs were elderly/injured/have something like arthritis that restricted how long they could move.
My old JRT is still fit for her age and will walk for 4-5 miles, but she's her own worst enemy because she tries to keep up with the younger spaniel as well and she's got arthritis so suffers the next day. She also doesn't cope in hot or cold weather as well anymore, I posted on here a couple of years ago and a really kind MNer sent me a carry bag.
A pushchair wouldn't be suitable for the walks we do, but the carry bag is brilliant, when she starts to struggle and needs a rest I just put her in it for a while and carry on with my hands free and she gets a rest and then she goes back down for a bit until she needs a rest again. It means she doesn't get left at home when I take the other dog out for long/high energy walks every time and the other dog gets what she needs as well.
Doesn't really matter what anyone else thinks, if it works for you and the dogs then go for it!

ArcticBells · 10/02/2025 20:28

No problem as long as you don't dress them in matinee jackets and bonnets Grin
