What would you think if you saw dogs in their own pram?

I have 3 aging dogs. The maltese is 12, the toy poodle is 11 and the Chihuahua is 14. I inherited them from my grandmother who passed a few years back. I have always loved them but they are absolutely adored by myself and children since we brought them home.

The thing is that toy poodle has always needed carrying after a very short while on walks but the other two have been quite happy to carry on. But the chihuahua is now slowing down. I know they enjoy being out (still get excited when I mention walkies etc). The Maltese can go on for much longer. And it also does me the world of good being out the house. Right now I end up carrying the dogs as and when they get tired. Dh has suggested a stroller but I don’t know why I find the idea really embarrassing. I know I shouldn’t care what people think but I do.

Be honest, what would you think if you saw a woman pushing two dogs in a dog pram/stroller?

We do it for our dogs and don't give it a second thought.
OH is built like a BSH and thinks nothing of pushing them about.🙂

Reading replies about the OP not managing their conditions, what a load of rot
Our older dog loves being out & about but just can't walk the distances anymore so he rides in the buggy (loves it) and then hops out for a sniff.
It also allows us to take the Ddogs places that you can't take a dog on a lead. Shops, churches, formal gardens, busy town centres etc, all are happy to allow the Ddogs to be pushed around where they can't get in anyone's way.

I would think you’re a loving and dedicated pet owner to be making sure the dogs get fresh air and as much exercise as they can manage.

Wow. How deeply unpleasant. How do you know if a dog doesn't need to be in a buggy? Do you always ask for their medical history?

Maybe owners should put one of those disabled toilet signs, 'not all disabilities are visible' on their buggies for the benefit of eye-rolling twats?

I'm unpleasant but you're ok to call me a twat? Hypocrite much. As I said to OP, it's more the ones who don't need one that make me eye roll. And no, I've got much better shit to do with my time than ask for medical history of dogs🙄

HoskinsChoice · 10/02/2025 17:50

I would firstly think that you were doing everything you possibly can to give your dogs their best life. Then I'd stop and chat to you about which pram you'd bought, how easy it was to get your dog to go in it etc (my dog is heading the same way and I'd be interested!).

Mumofyellows · 10/02/2025 17:56

If they were elderly or poorly dogs who still needed to get out for fresh air and to enjoy seeing the world then I would think that was very lovely!

Wherehavetheyallgone · 10/02/2025 18:07

I would think the dogs must be elderly or have mobility issues. That they have a caring owner who is taking them out so they can be in the fresh air. That's if I even noticed, to be honest!

I'm sure those strollers are £££ though. Try eBay/Gumtree or ask on your village Facebook. It's the sort of thing that some people might buy while their dog is injured, not use very much and now have cluttering up their garage and are happy to sell on.

wavingfuriously · 10/02/2025 18:10

Had to make the same decision myself v recently! most people don't even notice...I got a couple of funny looks but so what !🤷‍♀️ those people probably have never owned elderly dogs.
It's made such a difference because the dog can walk a limited distance and then be put into buggy for rest of walk. I put warm blanket inside and he's fine 👍🙂 🐶
Good luck and go for Innopet brand really good 👍

My Mum has a trio of little dogs, the oldest one can’t really walk very far now so she starts off in the doggy stroller, the other two walk to the fields, by the time they get to the field the next oldest one clambers into the pram and the youngest runs around field. Then on the way home the youngest and the middle one walk home so the only one that doesn’t get out is the elderly one.
No one ever says anything apart how lovely it is to see the oldest one still included in walks etc my Mum wouldn’t want to leave her behind and she would hate to be without her doggy sisters so the stroller means that they can all join in.
Id go for it if I were you.

Some DIY shops in my country Japan have special trolleys for customer's dogs. Birth rate is declining so a lot of people treat pet animals as if they were their children. Dogs in their own pram is normal there.

What would you think if you saw dogs in their own pram?
teonaidh · 10/02/2025 18:18

Not un unusual sight in my area by any means and nobody gives them a second glance :) It’s a great way to keep your pets active on their own terms.

sprigatito · 10/02/2025 18:20

I'd think "great, they won't be leaping up at strangers or leaving lumps of shit on the pavement".

CharityShopChic · 10/02/2025 18:22

Being totally brutal - if your dogs are so elderly and disabled that they are unable to enjoy a walk any more, maybe it's time to think about letting them go? Dogs need to be dogs, running around, chasing sticks, sniffing each other's arses. Not being pushed around in a pram.

OohKittens · 10/02/2025 18:22

My chihuahua isn't a fan of walking and sits on my daughter's lap in her wheelchair. I would definitely use a pet stroller with him otherwise

Hedgerow2 · 10/02/2025 18:23

@Devilsmommy - it was you who first used the word 'twat' to describe people who use buggies for their dogs - ie many of the people posting on this thread. I used the term back at you ironically rather than hypocritically 🙄.

Still waiting for you to explain how you know which dogs don't need buggies ....?

I'd think either

  1. The dogs couldn't walk very far
  2. They were elderly
  3. They were disabled in some way

And with all three I'd think what a lovely owner making sure they still got out for "walkies" and to experience all the places they love.

hideawayforever · 10/02/2025 18:26

it's a really good idea, dogs still like to get out in the fresh air even if they can't walk far, so this would be ideal for them. Definitely do it, if I saw you I would think it was lovely

Sadcafe · 10/02/2025 18:29

It gets the dogs out and importantly for many of the more elderly people I see doing this, it gets them out

PresidentBarklett · 10/02/2025 18:30

I'd assume the dog was either elderly or injured. I would think you were a kind and loving owner.

Beautifulweeds · 10/02/2025 18:31

I think how lovely for them to get fresh air and the smells they love. Xx

You can tell when a dog is old by looking at them usually

thehorsesareallidiots · 10/02/2025 18:45

Wouldn't think about it at all. Seen it a million times, either with elderly dogs who aren't up to a walk but still benefit from an airing, or puppies who aren't fully vaxxed yet. They make dog prams because lots of people find them useful.

BoldAmberDuck · 10/02/2025 18:48

I’d think you were a lovely caring person, loads where I walk my dogs ❤️

StMarie4me · 10/02/2025 18:49

I always think how good it is that there is now a way to get an ageing doggo out in the fresh air.

TheFormidableMrsC · 10/02/2025 18:50

I see this quite a lot, it's fine! I saw a cat in a baby carrier at a car show last summer. When I worked in London there was premium store near my office owned by a woman called Brix Smith Start. She was beautifully eccentric and she used to push her dog around in a buggy.

Hedgerow2 · 10/02/2025 18:51

@Devilsmommy - and if they aren't old but have heart disease, hip dysplasia, severe arthritis (doesn't just affect old dogs), awaiting/recovering from a cruciate ligament op, vestibular disease .... ?
