What would you think if you saw dogs in their own pram?

I have 3 aging dogs. The maltese is 12, the toy poodle is 11 and the Chihuahua is 14. I inherited them from my grandmother who passed a few years back. I have always loved them but they are absolutely adored by myself and children since we brought them home.

The thing is that toy poodle has always needed carrying after a very short while on walks but the other two have been quite happy to carry on. But the chihuahua is now slowing down. I know they enjoy being out (still get excited when I mention walkies etc). The Maltese can go on for much longer. And it also does me the world of good being out the house. Right now I end up carrying the dogs as and when they get tired. Dh has suggested a stroller but I don’t know why I find the idea really embarrassing. I know I shouldn’t care what people think but I do.

Be honest, what would you think if you saw a woman pushing two dogs in a dog pram/stroller?

A few people have them here. Like that their dogs are elderly or recovering from being hit by a car. I meet one lady regularly with her dog and it always makes me smile as the dog looks really happy. She pushes him in the pram until they get to the park. Then the dog goes out and walks on the grass. When the grass ends he waits to be lifted into the pram again.

I would not think it was cute or adorable or anything like that.

I would think that this was another sign of the babyfication of dogs in our society.

I don't like the proliferation of fur babies as you might have guessed.

I’m not a person who dresses a dog up, beyond a water proof coat (think mini horse rug) but I fail to see how anyone intelligent and caring for an elderly dog is doing harm by extending their life span and giving a bit of quality interaction by using a dog stroller.🤷‍♀️ Regardless of what those who might choose not to have a pet in their life think, for those who do love their animals, you do all you can within reason to keep them as healthy, happy, pain and stress free.

Fluffyyellowball · 10/02/2025 16:03

I would just think they had mobility issues and how lovely it was that you were still taking them out to enjoy the sights and smells rather than be cooped up at home.

Dotjones · 10/02/2025 16:04

I'd assume the person was a bit weird and probably cross the road if I could. Not basing this on any actual evidence, but my instinct would be the sort of person who pushes dogs around in a pram would be the sort of person who will try to start unprovoked conversations with strangers, which I hate.

But I mean if that sort of reaction were the general view it wouldn't impact you in any manner, other than making the pavement a little clearer for you.

Way to go missing the point.

Well you made several points. I agreed with the others so I didn't counter them.

Coffeeishot · 10/02/2025 16:05

Nobody bothers in real life if they see a dog(s) in prams, I just assume it's convenient for dogs and owners to get out and about.

I2amonlyhereforTheBeer · 10/02/2025 16:06

I'd be wondering what the father looks like 🤔😆

People drive their dogs in the car to places like woodland to take them for walks, they can't sniff from the car either.

I don't think it's that weird to use a transportation device for some of the walk if your dog can still enjoy e.g. a walk around a park, but wouldn't be able to manage the walk to and from the park as well.

That’s exactly how we started with our stroller. The walk to get somewhere canine pleasant got too much, so we roll him there, and then he has a ball with other dogs, lots of sniffs, etc.. then we roll him home again. He’s getting good exercise, stimulation, is socialised, and still has lots of fun.

Quite honestly, I would think "OMG DOGGIES! Cute old/disabled very loved doggies, let me see the doggies please!"
I might not say that out loud but I'd be thinking it and smiling at your doggies because omg cute.

Arran2024 · 10/02/2025 16:08

I got a buggy for my dog last year when he struggled to walk. He is a bernese mountain dog so it was a pretty big buggy! Anyway, it was fine. People largely ignored us, but then I do live in London!!

I bought mine on amazon. They have loads.

YourChirpyFatball · 10/02/2025 16:09

I saw a woman pushing a goose on a pram once. Maybe it was elderly but it was a wonderful humorous sight.

You're just not a very emotionally intelligent person are you?

I'd so love to have seen that. I see dogs in strollers a fair bit. Don't blink an eye. I certainly wouldn't cross the road :)

Buildingthefuture · 10/02/2025 16:12

I have met some lovely frosty faced dogs in pushchairs! I would just assume you were like me and loved your dogs? I used one for a bit when one of mine had a big operation but was absolutely not allowed to go for walks. She hated being left at home while the others went out, so a pushchair it was. She loved getting out and about and no one said anything negative.

treesandsun · 10/02/2025 16:12

I would think oh look at those dogs in a pram - the cuties. If I was to think beyond that I would assume their was a medical reason or they were elderly but whatever the reason none of my business.

Arran2024 · 10/02/2025 16:13

Here is my boy in his buggy

What would you think if you saw dogs in their own pram?
warmheartcoldfeet · 10/02/2025 16:18

I think it's a great solution. Fresh air, dogs can pootle about for a bit and get back in, you can walk as far and long as you like.

Me and a friend nearly killed her little tiny old dog taking him on a 4 mile countryside trek when we were teens. Poor thing nearly had a heart attack and was wheezing and shaking for an hour when we got home.

Getitwright · 10/02/2025 16:19

Here’s a photo of our pooch in his chariot. He’s around four miles from our car here, on a long walk. Taking a break while we look around.

Hedgerow2 · 10/02/2025 16:19

Surely nobody's going to think you have an able-bodied dog in there who's being deprived of the opportunity to walk?

People will assume a dog in a buggy is old or incapacitated in a way that prevents them walking. And that you're a caring owner taking them out for a change of scene. I'd give you a warm smile and greet you as a fellow dog-lover.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 10/02/2025 16:21

I wouldn’t think twice. I’ve seen dogs in specific dog strollers a few times. If the dogs are old/and or have difficulty walking any distance, it’s surely the right thing to do.

hehehesorry · 10/02/2025 16:22

Nessastats · 10/02/2025 15:43

Way to go missing the point.

You keep missing the point that people use it for a portion of the walk, not the whole walk, and that the OP has multiple dogs and that it's entirely normal to want your aging dog to enjoy the whole walk with the more able dogs whether it can walk the whole way or not. And it also saves getting muddy footprints on you from carrying an old dog part of the way. Go somewhere else with your euthanasia death cult

ArtyFartyHippopotamus · 10/02/2025 16:24

My elderly whippet couldn’t walk very far at all. She was a rescue and was in a terrible state when we adopted her. We had many happy years together, and when she was losing her mobility I got her a doggy pushchair. She loved it! We could still get to her favourite places and she would be sniffing the air and enjoying the ride.

Tbh this Is what I'm like, I met a woman with her old lady dog in a stroller I almost squealed DOGGIE 😀 I was very adult about it and asked after the dog etc etc but inwardly omgdoggie !

DisforDarkChocolate · 10/02/2025 16:25

If assume old or I'll doggies.

Shufflebumnessie · 10/02/2025 16:26

I'd assume that the dog was elderly/injured/recovering from surgery/mobility issues etc, and think how nice it was that their owner was still helping them get out & about.
