What would you think if you saw dogs in their own pram?

I have 3 aging dogs. The maltese is 12, the toy poodle is 11 and the Chihuahua is 14. I inherited them from my grandmother who passed a few years back. I have always loved them but they are absolutely adored by myself and children since we brought them home.

The thing is that toy poodle has always needed carrying after a very short while on walks but the other two have been quite happy to carry on. But the chihuahua is now slowing down. I know they enjoy being out (still get excited when I mention walkies etc). The Maltese can go on for much longer. And it also does me the world of good being out the house. Right now I end up carrying the dogs as and when they get tired. Dh has suggested a stroller but I don’t know why I find the idea really embarrassing. I know I shouldn’t care what people think but I do.

Be honest, what would you think if you saw a woman pushing two dogs in a dog pram/stroller?

I saw a woman pushing a goose on a pram once. Maybe it was elderly but it was a wonderful humorous sight.

Honestly, we need more people like this in the world. If you have goose in a pushchair, I have questions, and I can't imagine anyone willing to do this isn't A. A good person and B. A good laugh.

May we all be goose pushers. May we know goose pushers. May we raise goose pushers.

Purplecatshopaholic · 10/02/2025 16:29

I have two neighbours who take their older dogs out in a pushchair type thing. Makes sense and is actually really sweet. No one bats an eye here.

EmeraldShamrock000 · 10/02/2025 16:30

Not a lot.

I see it all the time.

It's a good idea for the elderly dogs.

Beryls · 10/02/2025 16:31

I would think it's nice that older dogs are still getting to go out and spend time outdoors with their owner. I was going to get one for my elderly dog for when we went away somewhere and she couldn't cope with all the walking anymore, but unfortunately she passed away before our next holiday 😔.

I think it's more common now, nobody will think it's daft, and if they do - sod them!

Devilsmommy · 10/02/2025 15:45

I'll be.honest though I know it's not what you want to hear but when I see dogs in strollers I just instantly think twat and do a massive eye roll. I guess it's more for the dogs that don't need to be in a pram whereas yours are obviously old and so need it. Sorry 😐

Wow. How deeply unpleasant. How do you know if a dog doesn't need to be in a buggy? Do you always ask for their medical history?

Maybe owners should put one of those disabled toilet signs, 'not all disabilities are visible' on their buggies for the benefit of eye-rolling twats?

alianangel · 10/02/2025 16:32

I had one for my elderly dog, it really made a difference to being able to continue to go for long walks. He’d walk as long as he could and when he stopped we’d put him in the pushchair and carry on. It also has cup holders, which was fantastic 😁

My face will be friendly or neutral but in my head I'm singing 🎶 dog in a pram 🎶 to the tune of the Adams Family 🫰🫰

I think if a dog is at the point it needs a pushchair then you need to be taking it to the vet to work out why it can't walk. If it's arthritis then there are treatments for that. But id judge the fuck out of someone whose solution for their dog that can't walk is to just get it a pushchair and not bother to seek medical attention for it. The point of walking a dog is for it to be able to sniff. It can't do that from 3 ft in the air. If id treated my dog for arthritis and it still couldn't walk, time to face up to it's quality of life and if it's fair to the dog to keep it going.

Do you think the same about people with mobility problems too?

Nowthesaidmother · 10/02/2025 16:33

Completely normal, I often see dogs in doggy prams and assume they are elderly or disabled.

EmmaMaria · 10/02/2025 16:47

I see people out with older dogs in prams often. I think it's great - it enables them to get out, maintain interest in life, and amble as well as they are able without pressure.

Some years ago I had a disabled elderly dog who had a "wheelchair" - he occasionally got laughed at but he didn't care - he loved it and at times whirled around the place like some weird gladiatorial chariot.

LaurieFairyCake · 10/02/2025 16:49

Thank God you aren't my doctor. The dog walks fine, but I don't and the doctors say there is no treatement to improve my situation. You'd be putting me down.

I'm judging the fuck out of you!

Our dog died a few months ago, and up until then we regularly used a dog pushchair for him - though I prefer to think of it as a wheelchair, a mobility aid.
We didn't want to leave him at home all the time, he was part of our family and we enjoyed having him with us on days out and holidays and he definitely preferred it to being left at home alone. He would let us know when be wanted to get down and walk and when he was tired and wanted to get back up.
Yes certain family members were mortified by it on days out and holidays - but I chose not to care.
Whenever I see someone with a dog in one I always like to chat to them as they are usually like minded dog loving people.

I think it's great when I see someone taking out a dog in a pushchair as it must be less mobile or elderly. It's a lovely thing to do, give them some stimulation.

Exactly. We had an elderly staffy who had intervertebral disc disease and cold only walk for very short distances - so we got him a dog stroller. He would patter along for a short while, then ask to go in the stroller. It meant we could take him further than the grass verges opposite our house. After we lost him, we donated it to 'Winston's Wheels', a charity which provides such equipment for dog owners who can't afford to buy one.

Whenever we see people with one, it makes us smile to remember our old boy.

In one of those huge Silver Cross prams too. 😆

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 10/02/2025 16:57

My old boy had a pram. He was deaf and blind so couldn't navigate the street walks at the end. He used to in the pram to get sniffs and then off on a long line on the flat grass paddock.

Sparkledangler · 10/02/2025 16:58

There used to be this chap round our way who used to very slowly walk his obviously aged and struggling dog. He was very patient and very obviously loved that old boy very much but the dog would still be struggling. He would wheeze and wobble and shake. Poor old thing would still show willing but couldn't manage. Very sad to see the pup still in there without the ability. I think it would be preferable to have them in a doggie stroller than put them through the strain, so long as they have a bit of exercise when they want it.
Go for it. Any sensible onlooker will quickly be able to work it out.

I would think there’s a high possibility I’m in an area with a Gail’s on the high street.

Edited

I laughed out loud when I saw that - saw one last week outside the new Gail’s on our high street ! The dog was less noticeable for being in a pram, than for not being the regulation toffee coloured doodle that is ubiquitous here.

Getitwright · 10/02/2025 17:05

We met a three legged Labrador rescue last week. Gorgeous dog, seriously undernourished, but now thankfully with caring, with us til she dies owners. She’s the lightweight kind of Lab, owners are very experienced rescuers, and know what they are doing. It’s a front leg completely removed, so she has to compensate with her other front leg, which for anyone that knows Labs is a bit of a red flag for later life joint issues. So they have ordered a Stroller for her, walks, runs as much as she wants, has a rest, repeat. She only looks a young pup, but is in fact a very badly mistreated 2.5-3 year old. After a horrible young life, she is now going to be having the kind of life she deserves.

Dogsandcatsandamousetoo · 10/02/2025 17:05

I would think you're a loving dog owner who wants to ensure your dogs continue to get fresh air and exercise to the best of their ability. Plus I would find the sight adorable🥰

Just because dogs are sick or elderly doesn't mean their lives should come to a stop, how depressing it would be for them not to get out and about in the world.

I haven't read the whole thread so I don't know if this has already been suggested - you can order customised dog stroller signs off Etsy. I've seen some saying "Elderly arthritic dog on board" etc

Innopet strollers are supposed to be the most comfortable and best quality.

I'd assume the person was a bit weird and probably cross the road if I could. Not basing this on any actual evidence, but my instinct would be the sort of person who pushes dogs around in a pram would be the sort of person who will try to start unprovoked conversations with strangers, which I hate.

But I mean if that sort of reaction were the general view it wouldn't impact you in any manner, other than making the pavement a little clearer for you.

I have a buggy for my dog - he had lymes disease and is on loads of meds. It caused poly arthritis, which flares up then goes. When he has a flare up heroes in the buggyso he can come out on walks with our other dog. He loves it - walks as far as he can then gets in.

He isn't using it atm.

Btw I am the last person to want to strike up a conversation!

BruFord · 10/02/2025 17:19

It’s commonplace around here, I’ve seen cats in prams too.

We talked about getting one for our dog (11) if he slows down more. He loves exploring new areas but gets tired on the way home.

warmheartcoldfeet · 10/02/2025 17:22

Can we have more cute pictures of dogs in prams please?

I'm not even a dog person but this is making my day

Yes please! I haven't had a chance to read through the whole thread yet, I'm looking forward to doing that later, can't wait to see the pictures🥰

Perfectly fine. It gets you and them out for some fresh air.
