What would you think if you saw dogs in their own pram?

I have 3 aging dogs. The maltese is 12, the toy poodle is 11 and the Chihuahua is 14. I inherited them from my grandmother who passed a few years back. I have always loved them but they are absolutely adored by myself and children since we brought them home.

The thing is that toy poodle has always needed carrying after a very short while on walks but the other two have been quite happy to carry on. But the chihuahua is now slowing down. I know they enjoy being out (still get excited when I mention walkies etc). The Maltese can go on for much longer. And it also does me the world of good being out the house. Right now I end up carrying the dogs as and when they get tired. Dh has suggested a stroller but I don’t know why I find the idea really embarrassing. I know I shouldn’t care what people think but I do.

Be honest, what would you think if you saw a woman pushing two dogs in a dog pram/stroller?

There is an old woman who lives near me who pushes her two small elderly dogs in a stroller. I think it's kind of sweet.

FaeryQueen · 10/02/2025 14:43

See it quite a lot around here. No one takes a blind bit of notice.

FortWalton · 10/02/2025 14:44

I wouldn't think anything of it false stop my friend had a stroller for her aging terrier who could either walk to the park or walk round the park but could no longer do both. It seemed to me to be a sensible way to proceed.

MyrtleLion · 10/02/2025 14:44

It's adorable.

LittleRedYarny · 10/02/2025 14:44

I personally wouldn’t judge because I know for friends with elderly dogs it has meant they aren’t left behind on adventures. Other people may think you’re a bit mad but really does it matter because you’re doing a caring thing.

TokyoSushi · 10/02/2025 14:45

Quite a lot of people do it around here, nobody even really notices.

KimberleyClark · 10/02/2025 14:45

I’d think it a practical way of getting elderly dogs around.

DancefloorAcrobatics · 10/02/2025 14:45

Just go for it!
I think it's lovely and you can use the stroller to get to the exiting places for the dogs.

PearlClutzsche · 10/02/2025 14:45

I think it's great when I see someone taking out a dog in a pushchair as it must be less mobile or elderly. It's a lovely thing to do, give them some stimulation.

LaurieFairyCake · 10/02/2025 14:46

It's perfectly normal

Old dogs still need stimulation 🥰

MuttsNutts · 10/02/2025 14:46

I would assume the dog wasn’t able to walk for long distances but that their owner loved them so much that they still wanted to give them the best quality of life possible by taking them out for a stroll in the fresh air.

It’s really not unusual now, I have seen lots of dogs being taken out like this and if I saw you out with your three lovely little dogs, I would probably stop for a chat 😊

spiderlight · 10/02/2025 14:46

I would think 'How lovely that they're still being taken out and about'.

SnapdragonToadflax · 10/02/2025 14:47

I'd assume the dogs were old or unwell? I see it quite often, don't really think anything of it.

Pootles34 · 10/02/2025 14:47

I suspect most people won't even realise it's a dog you have in there OP!

But if I did realise, I'd think it was sweet - better than those who never take them out at all.

Sesame2011 · 10/02/2025 14:47

I would think the dog(s) were struggling with age/illness/injury.

I've never used a dog pram myself but can't imagine a young agile dog would like to be kept in a pram so would be obvious if the dog liked being in there or not.

Soubriquet · 10/02/2025 14:47

I used to have a dog pram for my jack Russell. He had some odd condition with his feet which meant that if he walked too much on concrete, the skin eroded away and left him with very visible sores. So he used to get in his pram till we got to the river bank, run on the grass, and then get back in to go home. He would just refuse to walk until I picked him up to put him in his pram.

I don’t judge. There are always reasons.

Onlyvisiting · 10/02/2025 14:47

That they were old and couldn't walk far

NewYorkBuilder · 10/02/2025 14:48

Adorable and very caring. I would think quite highly of any pet owner doing this. I just love dogs and anything that gives them a happy life is good.

comoatoupeira · 10/02/2025 14:48

I wouldn't judge if the pram wasn't dolled up like a princess pram, and if the dog was obviously old!

Onlyonekenobe · 10/02/2025 14:50

We see loads of them around here, but actually using a doggie pram seems dependent on the human's age rather than the dog's! It's always old ladies. I do think they're a bit silly, but I'm not a dog owner. I can totally imagine someone loving their dog enough to do this, it's quite sweet really.

madaboutpurple · 10/02/2025 14:51

Last year I was in Llandudno on a day trip out and a local lady had her little dog in a pram. It turned out the dog was blind and could only walk a short distance each day which was why she used a pram. I thought she was a sweet lady.

I'd mind my own business.
There was also a lady walking an old dog in a stroller by us for a while but I've not seen them recently. I always thought she was just doing her best to let the dog sea and smell fresh the air and not be stuck indoors or in pain trying to walk.

MidnightPatrol · 10/02/2025 14:51

I always assume the dogs are elderly and think it’s sweet they’re being taken out!

Ten years ago I thought it was just people being precious - so I appreciate your hesitance. Just avoid making it look like a baby in a pram surrounded by pretty blankets and soft toys.

DiscoBeat · 10/02/2025 14:51

I would think they struggle to walk and it was lovely the owner cared enough to find a way to still take them out.

SquashedSquid · 10/02/2025 14:51

I'd think the dogs were elderly or had an injury. I think you should do it!
